I need some help from those of you who listen to (underground) dubstep. I was asking my eleven year old nephew the other week what kind of music he's into at the moment. Now he said dubstep but he clearly doesn't own any, bless him. I think it's safe to assume he's got to secondary school and his new mates are all into dubstep (most of them probably don't own any either hehe). So I'd like to do a dubstep mix for him, one that he can play to his mates and it will blow their heads off. Not literally.

I'll put the mix together myself of course, but I need a push in the right general direction. So give me a few producers / labels that I should look into, and I'll take it from there. It has to be relentlessly undergroud stuff though, I don't want any of this Ministry Of Sound Top 40 crap. When I say "underground" I don't just mean the hard stuff, anything that's really different that I can't buy in Asda. I'm a complete novice at this genre so any help at all will be great. I'll upload the mix when it's done, for your listening pleasure ;)

Thanks in advance,

Adam :rock

Check out Aphex Twin -not modern dubstep by any means but a good base! Also Burial. I prefer the slower build ups rather than the full in your face base drops!

I'd be terribly remiss if I didn't direct you to:

Also here are some "girlier" ones

And I forget if you already know about Blackmill but just in case

I'm not a "dubstep fan" since most of it I come across I dislike, and I seem to rarely come across the underground stuff, of course, living where I do. Plus, I tend to ignore genre labels..which doesn't help the memory in this case :) Could we hear your mix when you're done? Love to see what you end up with.

Yes of course, and thanks very much for those links. I've heard the Shem Helios remix for some reason, maybe it's been linked on here before.

I'm aiming to get it done for Christmas, but we'll see. Realistically it'll probably be for his birthday in March. Walking blindly into a new genre and expecting to do anything half decent in four weeks is reaching a bit :lol

I don't listen to dubstep, but what do you consider 'underground'? Is it just stuff no one has heard of?

If so, this is one of the songs I came across on my travels:

I'm sorry :lol

Black Sun Empire and Pendulum have been getting into it. Pendulum - The Island starts electro dnb (part 1) but goes into dubstep (part 2). Not really underground though.
Unfortunately I'm more of a DnB guy, and the dubstep I have is ponies :D so you don't want that. Well, maybe you do for the songs that don't have samples... http://www.youtube.com/user/OfficialOmnivore/ Example track with no samples (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeB9fnytYwo)
