Have a look at Hellfire_WZ's tutorials on YouTube (they're really good!). Type "Hellfire_WZ" in the search bar (to go to his channel) and click on the playlist titled "Wipeout HD Tutorials". :)

This thread helped me a lot: WipEout HD FAQ (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?6308-Wipeout-HD-FAQ)
I'm a WipEout newbie, but still going through all the tutorials and the many videos posted here (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?5403-WipEout-HD-Videos), I'm constantly improving. I got the Transcendence few days ago, and now I'm losing so many races online trying to learn from the best pilots around what racing really means. Time trials and speed laps are your best friends, anyway. Do lots of them, test yourself online with some races, then back to SLs and TTs. I'm nothing compared to guys over here, but hey, at least I'm better than the first day I got WipEout HD.

Yes as Gekko says, TT and SL are your best friends for racing improvement, well lap times anyway. Online is your friend for learning how to salvage a terrible race, and how to destroy everything in your path ;)
Sign up on www.wipeoutrankings.com (http://www.wipeoutrankings.com). I can't stress enough just how good this site is as a motivational tool, and as a way of gauging your progress.
Also, Youtube. I'll edit this post tonight with a list of some of the best YT channels, you'll learn so much from seeing how the top pilots get round the tracks. Good luck, and enjoy it :D

Watching speed laps or time trials on youtube was, for me, the quickest tool for learning how to be faster around the track. Seeing the fastest records will usually answer where the best place is to use a single turbo on any track, plus any obscure barrel rolls you wouldn't normally discover. Quickest, but it won't make you better overall.
Hellfire_WZ's track tutorials I found most useful for learning a great deal about the racing lines on each track, which is probably the most vital part to improving overall time in a race.
Despite knowing the fastest routes, you will still have to play online, to get better online. It's like fighting games, in which you will need to learn and overcome other human opponents playstyles and mix-ups, as well as developing your own.
Take for example predicting mine/bomb placements. It's best not to slipstream someone closely, even if it is the best racing line, because you know that bomb is gonna pop out and hit you at some point. But also take into account scenarios like when and where the opponent has just turboed and barrel rolled in front of you. Is their energy more lieky to be low at this point? Could they have picked up a weapon during the overtake? When you know the tracks really well, you'll be able to assess your opponents situation that much more. Zone Battle is a good mode for improving reaction time to hazards. There are a few other things you can only learn to deal with online, such as getting smacked by everyone's tankship while cornering the Chenghou Project hairpin.
Also like fighting games, meter/energy management is very important. It may be better to absorb that turbo and survive a hit, becoming 2 seconds behind, rather than to risk escaping with it and getting eliminated, resulting in 5 seconds behind the player instead.
To summerise, in order of importance, to improve:
0. Make sure Pilot Assist is never on. A law will be passed in 2048 making it illegal, and using it can result in up to 25 years on Sebenco Climb.
1. Watch Hellfire's tutorials - the basics and the tracks.
2. Practice racing lines - set milestones for youself e.g. 10 perfect laps around a track in Rapier speed, then 10 perfect in Phantom etc.
3. Watch Speed Laps and Time Trials. As Colonel mentioned, www.wipeoutrankings.com is a useful tool, some players add video links to their records if you're having trouble finding them on the tubes.
4. Practice those turbos and barrel rolls. Racing lines are more important than them because you may have to adapt to and from the best racing line in order to pull some of these BR's off. Again, use milestones to improve consistency.
5. Get online! Keep an open mind about the opponent close in front or behind you. Think about thier situation and how to outsmart them, rather than focusing solely on overtaking.
6. Destroy the Elite AI, pass Zone 75, Beat Zico until he cries, Transcend, never give up.
Ok that was much more in depth than I intended but I hope it helps! :)

And about online videos and barrel rolls. Don't be tempted to do some of the trickiest BRs online, try them on SLs and TTs and get a consistent racing line before. Some pilots can make difficult BRs look like easy peasy. I can't count how many races I've lost trying to put off some BRs that I still can't master. It may be an obvious advice, but keep it in mind will help.

Anyway there are some good channels, I'm sure there are plenty more. Aeralys mentioned the video feature on Wipeoutrankings.com. It really is superb. Simply put all the drop down menus to "All" and the bottom one to "Matrix". The Matrix is an amazing tool, and if you click the [LINK] link on the right hand side, it will show you all the highest ranking videos that have been linked to on the site.
It was always my first port of call before I attempted any SL or TT.

Check out members' profiles to see their PSN ID. I'm not sure but I'd wager anyone still posting here these days is still racing online. If you find one zoner in a room, others are sure to follow. :) Like a nursery rhyme...
I forgot to mention, I found that adding members from here as friends, and comparing race times during online racing was a good progress indicator. Regardless of how close you are in skill, I found it easy. Never had the patience/time to work with the awesome wipeoutrankings site, so I just used this method (if it still functions?). After an online race you press square to switch to friends' best times. Or compare times while TTing offline too, whatever works.

Their channels are already known here, no need ! Anyway, never any tribute to them, when any one saying he's a fan of wipeout HD should knows the pioneers !
Flashback Jack has few videos but he inspired Pirahpac and showed the way.
Pirahpac, even if he wasn't always friendly with members here and retired from wipeout since months, with more than 200 videos of wipeout he did invented all the main techniques on wipeout HD and was hugely copied yes !! But no issue with that, it was done to show his way of playing and off course to inspire other pilots (and famous ones, believe me) to find their own techniques (like i did myself)... but ignoring him totally is some kind of revisionism !! ;)

I think a newbie (and this topic is aim to newbies, as its name implies) needs all different kind of videos, not only the incredible performance of top pilots. It has to be a step-by-step learning process with Wipeout, at least for me.

Leungbok, bear in mind that it's been several years since either of them were able to post here. The population of the site has changed dramatically since then, and it's very likely the new generation will not have come across them before. I don't think they've been ignored, just the case that newer members are perhaps not as aware of them as they are of players who are still active.

There are four things which I think I particularly need to improve. They are:
1 - Sideshifting - I rarely sideshift on corners; just use it to avoid things; I can see from online videos that a lot of speed can be gained by sideshifting properly.
2 - Racing line - players regularly pull away from me online in the same or similar ships when neither of us hit the side or use turbos etc; my lines can certainly be improved.
3 - Barrelling - I can only do the easy barrells every time I try; I'm poor at harder ones (e.g. all the Sol 2 ones I can pull off only about 50% of the time); I'm not aware of many others.
4 - Online tactics - racing online is very different; I have a long way to go to work out the best things to do in certain situations (e.g. I normally finish with 60+ energy).
So lots to work on. Which do you think are the most important of the above? Which one do you think will improve me quickest?
yeldar2097
22nd December 2012, 02:02 PM
Sideshifting comes under racing line. Racing line means everything, more so the higher the speed class.
Don't worry about other people online. Aim to complete the event in as quick a time as you can, and beating the opposition will come naturally as a result, the same as with AI.
Work on your lines and the rest will follow, including your opponents who will behind you ;)
NB: I advise against watching my videos via the ranking site. All videos were recorded before version 2.51 was released and as such are no longer viable.
JABBERJAW
22nd December 2012, 04:49 PM
Have you considered doing a new set of videos with the update? It might be nice for people to know what to shoot for ( and not get to) :). Also, are you competing in the wipeout championship?
yeldar2097
22nd December 2012, 05:18 PM
I considered making new videos when 2.51 was first released, but I no longer find any joy in the game due to the new handling and as such haven't played since about a month afterward (so no, I'm not competing).
I worked out rough estimates for times achievable at Phantom with this patch (as opposed to the old predictions I made for SaturnReturn's youtube project) during the time when I was doing side-by-side comparisons of pre/post patch.
The research was more so that I could write about the handling changes in greater detail on the forum, but since day one of the patch I knew I would not be able to play for my own enjoyment any more.
Almost every aspect of every track now needs to be executed differently in order to achieve the best times, the dynamics of every ship have changed in different ways, some more so than others, and the compounded effect of
these changes makes the game feel more like a chore, and not fun at all.

Hi guys :)
I just started to play Wipeout after 18 months and it's with patch 2.51. I'm really, really rusty, my fingers are stiff and i'm tired after 20 lap session. Maybe because of that i don't see any difference in handling at the moment. I had a long break and i forgot how the game physics is. Currently i'm playing Anulpha Speed Lap on Phantom speed. My PB from the past is 20.06, yesterday my best lap was 20.30 and i'm sure i have 0,3 margin there because lap was crappy, not a "perfect lap" and I only hit 11 speed pads.
The game with patch might be different but i will try to beat my old record with the ame method as used before.
Back on topic.
- I remember that deleting your old ghost was a good thing to improve your time. Sometimes the ghost is hard to chase and you are focusing too much on it. Making a new ghost gives you new feeling of challenge and might help.
- Watching videos on YT is another thing, pre or post patch doesn't matter in my opinion.
- Speed laps without Barrel Rolls are also a good thing to practise, it really puts your focus on racing line instead of making crazy rolls. Try to set a new "non BR record" and try to improve it.
Improvement will come with hours of gameplay :) Trust me on this one :)
P.S. Yeldar, do you have sub 20 on Anulpha recorded somewhere?

No, I won't play 2.51, sorry it just makes me sad. I have a pre 2.51 on my PS3 at home if anyone wants to come round and race me there :g.
P.S. Yeldar, do you have sub 20 on Anulpha recorded somewhere?
No, sorry, only 20.04. If I fire up my PS3 I should be able to make one for you. I'm free on 26th so I'll have a try then.
Some de-rust needed after long time but should be ok. It will be pre 2.51 though as I won't let that version in my house :P
Also, as for youtube videos on older version. Yes, they are still ok for BR locations, boost techniques etc... but DO NOT follow their lines.
The lines and sideshift locations are all different now, so you have to be careful with watching old videos where old rules apply.

Thanks Yeldar, that's really helpful. I'll see what I can do with my racing line, starting on Moa Therma Reverse, and see how far I can get.
I agree with you about ghosts Phaeton. I turn ghosts off so that I can focus fully on the track. My game time is 125 hours, which I expect needs to improved a great deal. I have some free time over Christmas so will try to put it to good use by playing Wipeout.

Another, probably obvious, one: try different ships. Not just at the beginning. Get comfortable with one, beat Elite AI, do your best TTs and SLs and then change ship.
Take my experience, for instance: I started with Assegai HD, quickly moved over Goteki 45 HD (and then Fury) and got Transcendence with it. Then I moved to AG Systems and Harimau, with some Icaras now and then. Only to discover that on Amphisheum Reverse I'm doing better with Feisar. Usually I go with Goteki 45 HD online, still my favorite, but I think that using different ships is useful not only to improve your racing line but to get the most out of some tracks.
Maybe elite pilots always go with their usual ship, but that's the beauty of the game: freedom of choice.

One thing I learned from all my piano practicing through the years is to start slow. If you play (the piano or wipeout) too quickly before you're ready you will develop bad habits that are difficult to break. Learn all the tracks on venom like the back of your hand before you move on to flash. Join or host games on venom class--this way you will get a great exposure to clever weapon strategies you otherwise wouldn't see.
JFthebestJan

all i can say is:
play ZONE mode! nothing is better to improof your skills early on in the game. all other modes are just finetuning your skills. in ZONE you'll learn the basics very fast.
amplificated
3rd March 2013, 01:42 PM
I disagree, Jan. I think Zone is a niche experience that does little to improve your game properly. The ship handling is way different, sideshifting is almost always a bad idea when the opposite is normally true, and it's not exactly the most time efficient mode for hunting down and practising BRs. As far as I'm concerned those are all absolute basics. Zone is really only alright for helping you get better at controlling your ship at high speeds necessary for Phantom and the higher Zones.
@ quickbeam: If you start slow with the objective of mastering it before moving on, which is something close to what I did, you will never be able to move on effectively to the faster speed classes :P Mastering Venom is tougher to do than it may seem.
scarfrogers
3rd March 2013, 04:47 PM
yeah I agree. Zone only helps me improve Phantom. Does nothing for me on Venom and Flash classes where learning location of SS and BRs become essential.
quickbeam
3rd March 2013, 05:24 PM
Ok, sure. Mastering anything takes years of practice, for sure, and even mastering one hairpin turn on chengdhou project is a process that could take months even on venom class. However, there's a difference between mastering a circuit and simply learning the circuit well enough to "always be thinking one corner ahead," as hellfire mentions in his tutorial on YouTube. I don't think it's realistic to expect yourself to fly like zico on every single circuit before you move to the next speed class, that's for sure :D
amplificated
3rd March 2013, 08:11 PM
Just saying. To further elaborate, while you can improve your game by focusing on one aspect of it first, it's probably best to take a balanced approach and to keep things fun by not trying to do too much at once. Just set your own objectives, play MP and SL, Zone, etc., and periodically reevaluate your gameplay. Watch YT vids from the best players, and practise one or two things you notice that could be mundane but you know you could improve on based on the evidence at hand, maybe even moves that seem totally crazy, learn from those techniques, and improvise. As long as you're playing and keep your mind open and inquisitive, you'll improve.

Agree.
Whenever I keep racing stuck at one speed class for too long, I lose my grip on other classes. Balance is the key.

So now I've become a little older and wiser in the ways of Wipeout . . . (yeah, right )
I finished the HD campaign after spending a few days on Meltdown. However, once I finished, I began the Fury campaign and was AMAZED at how difficult it was to win a race on Venom class! I think what I want beginners to realize is that track familiarization is a VERY different process from learning to compete against other racers. I mean, sure, it's no mean feat to consistently perform perfect laps in Speed Lap mode on Sebenco Climb on Phantom Class, but that doesn't mean you know how to race.
I agree with previous posters now that Venom racing is not necessarily "easier" than Phantom racing--they're just different beasts, and they both require equally complex tactics.

I agree with this; when I first started playing WipEout (first game was HD ) I played race on Venom and I got last place. I played Phantom for fun and I got last place. Now that I'm progressing in Campaign (did racebox and online too long) I can race Flash, Venom and Rapier (the latter with scratches all over my hull) but can still not play Phantom. Why? Because I've only played about 5 races on Phantom.

Just to point out how really amazing this game can be.
With AG-Systems, I was pretty sure I had my ship. It still is, in a way, but recently with Feisar (Fury) I smashed some of my times. It's all a matter of adjusting and refining your skills.

I don't know if anyone else does the same but the way I improve is by doing speed laps on the tracks which I am not really good at plus I often switch ships to see which I find best on the current track for example when ever I race on Sebenco Climb or Chenghou Project I usually use the Feisar Fury however if I am racing on Anulpha Pass I find AG-Systems Fury more comfortable but I can say that practicing on zone always helps but as for the ship switching it is a matter of personal preference :)

When i dod a time trial or speed lap however, it's usually to challenge a friend :)
(time trials drive me mad though, my consistency is shite….)
Haha, yes. I've seen you improve greatly over the past year or so my friend :) I see your phantom game has picked up too. Online is where its at, it's a whole other ball game compared to offline trials and laps. Speaking of which, my consistency also sucks on SL and TT, so when I did the campaign mode, I just gave it one shot at each mode and moved on. Surprisingly, the times weren't too bad.
hey skruffy!! always online!!
I try to get in an hour a day at least. Some days I play for so many hours that my left thumb goes very sore from using dpad (I dont use analog) and so I have to give it a break for a few days, until the skin harden on my thumb tip and i can peel it off, so I can feel the input better again.
Yeah. I is weirdo.
Peace.

Actually, I've been working on a project for a few weeks on this topic.
I've assembled a good lot of techniques and tactics and compiled them into a user friendly pdf guide. I am almost done with an HD guide that covers shortcuts, detailed weapons analysis, and some general tricks and tips. I will probably release it within the next week or so.
I've also started the painstaking process of taking in game photos revealing all of the barrel roll spots I know (most have the setup shot, and then a mid air upside down shot to show the actual roll itself!). I plan to assemble another guide shortly after the main one that shows detailed screenshots of all the rolls I know, with a difficulty rating for each.
If nothing else, my hope is that these guides will help newcomers to get a little know-how, and help the veteran pilots out there to have something to remember the game by!
I will see how large of a file I can post here, and if it exceeds the limit, I will post it on my own personal website and provide a link. If anyone is specifically interested, I can send you what I already have directly.

Good man. At one point I was planning a corner-by-corner breakdown of the entire game at Phantom speed, taking all ships and variables into account, with diagrams, voiceovers and whatnot. Then 2.51 happened while I was halfway through and the rules are completely different so my work was useless :(
I like user friendly pdf :D
Will be nice to see what you come up with.
