View Full Version : Custom controls and gameplay options for 2048?

Here is the actual letter I just sent to SCEE., there are no actual stars in the letter, when I copied and pasted here, they were added
Hello, my name is Al Sartwell. *I have been a wipeout fan since the beginning. *I have sent in many suggestions over the years, and many have been implemented into the games. *I even got my name in the WO3 credits for sending in suggestions and bug fixes. *A few months Ago I sent in a list of suggestions/options that have been very important to the wipeout franchise, mainly regarding full custom controls, AND gameplay options/game choices. *It appears that these suggestions were completely ignored, and the best part of wipeout has been removed for campaign mode in online and offline removing ALL ability to play the game as our Wipeout community loves. *These campaigns are fine, but they should not replace what has been in every wipeout game from the beginning, game choices and options. *We are extremely upset about this situation, especially since it is a great playing game. *Below is a detailed description as to why we need custom controls, and racebox like options ( Or a actual racebox in single player, online or adhoc mode). *The way it is now is a completely unacceptable way to play the game, and there was NO reason to remove racebox from the equation. *The campaign should be for unlocking, and there should be a racebox to actually play what you want to play, and how
You would like to play it. *I sincerely hope you implement our requests,
Thank you, * Al
Below, *I have listed technical and logical reasons as to why WE need custom controls and advanced options for single and multiplayer racing. It is difficult to get the controls down, and not having the option to change them is quite frustrating, especially if you knew if you had your configuration, it would be a much better experience. Also added in, is gameplay options, that is, ALL of the options for choosing races in single or multi player are gone, and replaced by*campaign events to gain trophies, and perhaps new ships, ect. There are no racing choices such as tt, or single race are even choices for racing, not to mention all the options that come with the track choices (speed, weapons, ect).*
The game is an amazing game, it just needs control options and classic gameplay modes that are easy to choose to make experience far far better.
1) RACER CONTROL OPTION:
This option is set up like quantum redshift, with one air brake, and it also adds a brake. The main issue with this setup, is that when the brake/steer bug was fixed, side shifting changed. if you turn the same way you are side shifting (which you have to in this mode for it to work), the entire ship turns (not so in HD). I am not saying to change it back, but only that this is not an option for someone trying to get records in the game, or trying to keep up with elite players. With only one brake, this is kinda for new people to the game, but can never be as fast as being able to side shift left and right with the tap of a button (without turning the dpad/analog stick at the same time). if you don't hit the pad, the ships remains facing straight down the track. So while this option is good for beginners, it is not for anyone who has played any previous wipeout game. Also, if someone has large fingers for the vita, they wll constantly be hitting lookback/spin on the analog stick every time they try to fire a weapon. I do this, and my fingers are thin. Given the option to put functions on the back pad, or on the two screen areas, would allow you to take the right analog stick out of the equation, like having an R2 and an L2. Even custom controls within the "racer option" settings (using the same button options), you could put a less intrusive function on the analog stick.
2) TOUCH AND TILT:
It is incredibly difficult to hold the back of the vita down for thrust, especially when you are tilting it back and forth, and while you do have a thrust button (X), it would be good to be able to use the back for say lookback/spin, that way you would not hit it by accident (analog right stick). While holding the gas (X) down, and trying to hit absorb or fire buttons, it is incredibly difficult not to also hit this right stick (spin around or look back), and have it mess up your race. IF you decide to use the touch screen for absorb/fire, then you CANNOT PITCH or use the THRUST button at the same time, and are stuck with the rear thrust panel (discussed earlier). OF NOTE is the TILT steering for barrel rolls. This is impossible to do on small jumps. IN WIPEOUT HD, the dpad was still active, allowing for you to use the dpad for barrel rolls, even while steering with tilt sensitivity. I understand that you may turn left or right by accident while trying to pitch, but it is better than not being able to barrel roll at all. it could be possible in the setting to have the analog stick only control pitch, and the dpad to do barrel rolls, but I think just keeping the dpad and the sticks fully active to allow better barrel roll functionality.
3) WIPEOUT CONTROL CONFIGURATION:*
Now to the main control configuration. Holding thrust down, and trying to hit absorb and fire results in a lot of accidentally*hitting the right analog stick (lookback/spin). This is incredibly annoying, and is constantly messing up races, and I'm sure even more for a new player, or a larger handed person. A custom option would either allow a less intrusive button function to be placed on the analog stick, OR if the other areas (touch panels) would be included in the custom options, you could just move that look back/spin function to the back pad of the vita. I do not know the technical difficulties of changing these features, but it would seem to me that allowing a custom configuration of just this "wipeout control configuration" would be the easiest change. add a line under the vita picture with the config buttons that says "CUSTOM". clicking on it would bring you to a pulse/hd type screen where you can adjust the button presses, then save.
I know that some players like the gas on the R trigger, that way you don't have to move your finger away from the thrust button at all. As it is now, you have to choose the racer configuration to do this, and the option is a control that is not as fast as noted earlier. A custom config of at least the Wipeout configuration is what our community is asking for. IF the*
other configs could be allowed to be custom, that would be fantastic as well.*
*OF NOTE, THE LAST THREE WIPEOUT GAMES HAD CUSTOM CONFIGURATION, why take it out? It makes no sense
SELECTING GAMES IN SINGLE PLAYER AND MULTI PLAYER
Wipeout has always had great choices when it comes to choosing style of races, and choosing options for those races, in both multi player(ONLINE and ADHOC) and single player modes. Wipeout HD was excellent online with all the options it gave you in all the modes you could choose. So it was a very unwelcome suprise to our community, that RACEBOX was removed from the game, AND the options for multiplayer are gone. We noticed that you needed to vote on a track (campaign mode), and*there are no options for just choosing a race, speed, and options, and just being able to race online. This is the sort of racing WE as a community like the most, and it has been taken out of the game completely. While we welcome a campaign mode in both single and multi player, we do not like that this is the only way to play the game. WE play the game because we like racing eachother, going for times, or just trying to improve. Our main goals are not to hit steve with a missile, and come in third place or higher. Like we said, we welcome this mode, and we know alot of work was put into it, but it appears it is at the expense of the core gameplay we know and love. It should sit beside that core gameplay, not replace it. We have members who have played the game and beaten the three seasons, and only speed lap is unlocked for practicing, nothing else. There are no events that*open up time trial, single race, zone, ect, and there has been no response from STUDIO LIVERPOOL regarding the situation, or explaining anything. Questions have been asked directly on facebook, twitter, but nothing, and some devs visit this site (the best wipeout site by far (10 years old), but do not answer any of the concerns related to the game. Ad hoc was*tested, but only one track showed up, and changing tracks, speed classes, ect could not be done by the person creating the game. This seems like an unnessessary hindrance when the setup for this was perfect in pure/pulse and HD. *Online was perfect in HD, but at this time, all of the great options in this game are now taken out. At this point it seems that we will get none of the great options of the last three games in single or multi player. The players that have played the game from Wipeoutzone (some love the old games, some love the newer ones), all love the gameplay in THIS VERSION ( That is saying alot if have ever seen the heated discussions regarding what Wipeout version is the best. We dont want the game to be far less enjoyable because we cannot race each other in the race and speed we want, and instead have to go through a series of trophy quests to get the race we like.
WHY ARE WE ASKING FOR THIS NOW INSTEAD OF WAITING TO SEE THE FINAL ENDING TO THE GAME TO SEE WHAT IS*
THERE?:
Because we know how Some of the previous wipeout games have treated this game in the past. After the first few updates in HD, and tweaks needed to be done, they were never able to take care of them, because no more work could be done on the project because the next game needed to be worked on. The leader boards are a mess in HD, the brake/reverse steer bug is still in it, and probably will never be fixed because the team in on new things now. Well, that new thing now is 2048, a better game, physics wise, and handling. The bugs have been taken care of from HD, the game is hard, and fun. However, all the replay value from the missing racebox (or similar options (all options from hd)) are gone, and in are new challenges after the online campaign is done for trophies. This is fine to have this but, Once again, the reason we play is to go for records, play online vs eachother, and try to perfect lines, that quite likely can never really be perfected, and that is the beauty, and long term appeal of wipeout, that you can never get to that perfect, perfect race, and that is why we come back to it. We, as wipeout fanatics*do not come back to it to collect trophies, that is an extra. We come back to it because damn it, I can knock 3 tenths more off chenghou reverse if I put my mind to it, or I know I can get number one on a speed lap, or I want to race against one of my friends that wiped the floor with me last time on Sebenco. Im going to play him 20 straight times on 20 lap races, and I better win one of them. As you can see, that are lots of reasons to come back and play, but the options of the previous three games needs to be there to do so. As it is now, it appears that a great game has been brought down to earth because of the missing nessessities that every wipeout game needs.
So what we are asking for is
1) Custom controls
2) racebox (or equivalent of everything from HD) Racebox is easiest
3) Racebox mode in Multiplayer(adhoc and online), with all options from HD (or exact equivalent of options)
4) *TURBO for time trials, these have always been in, please put them back, it makes the game far more fun finding that nice turbo spot. It also increases the speed even more
5) The modes preferred for online and single player are
A) Speed Lap
B) Single RAce
C) Time Trial (with 1 turbo per lap) -- this mode will keep the gameplay smoother, and not everyone likes only weapons. Weapons off is not the same, because there is no turbo
D) Eliminator, or equivalent
E) Zone mode
Note: *turbo for speed laps and time trials are preferrable, and have always been in EVERY wipeout game, but these are the least necessity.
In closing, our Wipeout community has been supporting the franchise since it's beginning. We have come to expect great games (delivered for sure), but we also sincerely request that you allow us to play the game with the controls that we love to use, and the game modes we have come to love over all the years.

Thanks, hopefully it will help. It really becomes apparent when the game goes to the higher speed classes, where you need excellent controls

There is "1)" in your letter but no "2)" or "3)".
Not very important, just some unconsistency.
I do hope you will succeed in adding custom control, this is the first "must have" is missing in the game!

One more reason why we need custom controls:
On Playstation blog;
Tweet from the week:
I am playing Ghost of Sparta on my PSVITA. Really nice to remap the directional buttons onto the joystick - yosp (Shuhei Yoshida, president of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment.
If even the president of SCE is saying he likes custom controls. Please SL, give us this option.

Could you please resend this letter to the twitter account. I have amended the letter to include gameplay as well. IT is below as well as the original post. thanks

Below, is a letter I would like to send to Studio Liverpool. I have listed technical and logical reasons as to why WE need custom controls and advanced options for single and multiplayer racing. I know many of you have not played the game, but I assure you, it is difficult to get the controls down, and not having the option to change them is quite frustrating, especially if you knew if you had your configuration, it would be a much better experience. Also added in, is gameplay options, that is, much of the options for choosing races in single or multi player appear to be gone, and replaced by
campaign events to gain trophies, and perhaps new ships, ect. It does not appear that racing choices such as tt, or single race are even choices for racing, not to mention all the options that come with the track choices (spped, weapons, ect). If these options are in, they are certainly hidden very deep. If anyone knows a contact for Studio Liverpool, or would like to forward this from our community, that would be much appreciated.
The game is an amazing game, it just needs control options and classic gameplay modes that are easy to choose to make experience far far better.
Hi, below I am listing technical and logical reasons why studio liverpool needs to add custom controls. I was thinking one of you guys knows how to contact them, and if this could be forwarded to them, we will all be far more happy. the controls are not good right now, and with the great game that it is, it would be a shame to be forced to play with the inadequate
options
3) WIPEOUT CONTROL CONFIGURATION:
Now to the main control configuration. Holding thrust down, and trying to hit absorb and fire results in a lot of accidentally
hitting the right analog stick (lookback/spin). This is incredibly annoying, and is constantly messing up races, and Im sure even more for a new player, or a larger handed person.
IF the
other configs could be allowed to be custom, that would be fantastic as well.

Great letter. Wipeout 2048 would be the only reason I'd consider purchasing a PS Vita, and I couldn't justify spending that sort of money for a Wipeout that didn't include the features that you so eloquently describe. Fingers crossed they'll pay attention and consider implementing your suggestions.

I hope it's more than consider on the control options. I cannot play the game legitimately, I am using the stupid one button brake because I use fingers for steering, and cannot hit the left brake. I would just like a response at the very least as to what we can do regarding options for the game in sp and mp. I don't give a crap about voice activated weapons, that is an extra, let's know the meat and potatoes of the game.

We absolutely need custom controls, one option for each style is not acceptable, or smart of SL. They also should not have taken out racebox, but they need to at least replace with all the same options for single player and multiplayer. We need more people to contact SL to at least see what they have planned for this. Why in the world would they take the stuff out of the game in the first place, it worked great as it was, and all they needed to do was add the new modes they wanted.

There was one thing that give hope for controls. When he was asked about customizable controls, he said, " unfortunately no, we only have three at the moment". I wonder if they read our posts, because it seems they are ignoring them. Also, he said they had tt, single race, and combat, but those are in the events anyway, so who knows. I am actually pretty worried now about the entire option for games scenario, and you may have to choose the damn events to do anything but speed lap. Also, the lack of turbo for SL and TT really bothers me. It seems they wanted to make a game ENTIRELY their own, and lost some of the great stuff in the game in the purge. It's too bad, since it's a great game.

I still hope for TT and SR and i'm confident on what i saw or read on many dev's interviews, "new modes, some for hardcore players..." maybe multiplayer TT ;). Have you been able to start the online campaign or use the augmented reality thing to unlock stuff, Al ?
About the turbo for SL/TT, it would be cool to have one but in the other hand we'll have less complains or suspicions about uber-shortcuts, bsb ...
I believe the devs silently reads those messages sometimes.

I also try to obtain elite pass on all kind of events ! Only one left for combat, but it's a pain in the arse, 100 pts required and i'm at 81 atm :bomb
After that, 4 zone events and 2 A+ challenges of the 3 i already unlocked.

I highly recommend people in the know to contact SL at this point. Leungbok has played through all three seasons elite, and no TT or Single Race option has been opened up. Even if it opens up after a A+ challenge, that is WAY too hard for any new wipeout player to accomplish. not one question has been answered up until this point regarding the gameplay options, it seems as if IGNORE ANY GOOD INPUT has been put into play, and the situation will blow over, and people will buy the game anyway. Let me assure you that you will be pissed with these options at this point. Why not a reply like " we are working on this". Or, " that's just how the game is going to be" or, " you do have all these options, you need to do xyz first".
It really feels now that single player will only be events and single lap, which is a travesty considering the great gameplay. Just to change the game, the best parts were taken out. I can't comment too much on multiplayer, but it seems events there too, with voting, and NO options besides these. This WILL kill the multiplayer experience very quickly without the standard options as well for choosing races. We don't look forward to a new event coming march 15, 7 laps, empire climb, kill 4layer goal, ect. We wouldnt mind playing that, but what we really look forward to is coming home, setting up some races with our options, then racing, or finding a race with the settings we like, then joining. There is absolutely no reason to take these out, nor is there any reason not to add them back into the game quickly with an update.
The only reason to not do this is because the debs want to say, " this is our game, and we are not going to change it no matter what".
Sometimes there are reasons for people to be upset, and you need to listen to the problems and solutions that are presented. This is most certainly one of those times.

Sorry for double post, but I needed to add one thing
It is not a nice thing to IGNORE your biggest fan base, to never reply to any suggestions, complaints, or reccommendations from people who love your games. These suggestions regarding controls and gameplay options have been presented months ago, by forum and by letter regarding these very same topics, and seem to have been ignored completely ( with the exception of reverse braking) in favor of making a game that deletes all the great things it had in it. There was no reason not to have both campaign AND racebox, or an equivalent of that.

Hey guys! long time - no see :)
I've been lurking for a while, trying to decide whether to get a Vita w/2048 or not.
Ignoring the fact that 32Gb cards won't be available at launch here in DK (other markets are apparently more important), it seems that 2048 isn't quite what I want either :(
My main focus would be on TT/SL since I would be using the Vita where there's little to no network coverage, thus making on-line almost irrelevant for me. Not being able to just select a track and go for a 100 lap jaunt puts me off quite a bit. Not being able to customise the controls would also mean me learning a new control set - I'm to old and set in my ways for that, dammit! :p
Still, it is WO. I'll keep an eye on this thread. Hope to see you on the tracks sometime.

It really seems like it is only events and SPEED LAP, which really is frustrating not to have the options. If you haven't noticed this is frustrating. :(

Yeah, exactly.
I really (really!) want to be excited about this, especially since Al and Leungbok both seem to think there's a good game hidden in there somewhere. That's the vibe I get at least, please correct me if I'm wrong :)
I like the Vita as such, I think 2048 looks incredible and I like the look and feel, despite it looking more modern than HD and Pure...
But... Al's list some of those things that made e.g HD great for me. And the no racebox/no tournaments/no custom controls kinda puts me off.
I won't be getting a Vita from launch, especially because of the memory card situation, but I really hope 2048 will look somewhat familiar after a few patches. Anyone remember HD's multiplayer at launch? :lol

Despite i didn't finished the solo campaign and didn't unlocked everything yet, my global impression on the game is very positive.
But first i will talk about the negative points :
- loading time : yes, they're a bit long (less than pulse ps2 anyway).
- SL/TT(the few ones from the campaign's nodes) without turbos. IMO the speed laps already are very interesting to race with the different routes available on each track (skill cuts), and also the tactical caracteristics of the various ships, mostly the prototype types, like the feisar which ability is to fill a speed gauge each time it hits a speed pad or the AG-Systems able to do 2 rotations for BRs with stronger boost and ehnanced side shifts (but other "classic" ships are great also depending the tracks/route ;)). Longer and more tactics tracks than HD makes TT/SL already very interesting, but yes turbos could increase possibilities and fun.
- The lack of single races, time trials (all tracks/speed classes), combat races (who need that ? :p) and tournaments is a pity.
- AI is uber-cheated on the most advanced challenges :lol (but some will take that as a positive aspect ;)).
I don't know about the online campaign, i can't go in multiplayer races with my european account, but i can see the leaderboards, the friends connected and their advancement in the campaign directly in the game.
positive aspects :
- Graphics are unbelievable for a handheld, i find most of the tracks nicer than HD's one (who already is my best looking game of ps3). Sol is graphically my favorite (and one of my favorite in terms of gameplay).
- tracks paths are awesome, the different skill cuts give several different tactics to win a race (taking some skill cuts will prevent you to take other ones like on unity park).
- longer and wider tracks. Even if the tracks are wider than HD's ones, their size and the difficulty of some turns or chained turns makes them very challenging at higher speed classes.
- The speed. Probably the most important aspect of the game. 2048 at super phantom is faster than HD or pulse. My feeling is that C class in 2048 (flash) equals rapier in HD. That game is very fast, one of the faster wipeouts.
- No 60 fps but a very smooth and well programmed 30 fps, i don't see the difference with HD on speed laps at super phantom, maybe some frame drops in some sr against AI, but nothing very significant.
- Difficulty. very easy at the begining (season 2048 ) it's very progressive and the last challenges of the campaign become really hard. The A+ challenges are way harder than the elite phantom sr from HD, mostly because of the uber-cheated AI which hit a top 10 rank at each race (i'm ranked 5 on queens mall A+ challenge and i only beat the AI of one second, lol).
- More strategy in the ships choice, i already spoke about feisar and AG-Systems prototypes, but other prototypes have cool characteristics. Auricom prototype is a fighter type ship, he can hold his lines whatever hits it (weapons, ships) but he can't pick up defensive weapon (green pads), qirex is also a fighter type prototype and if he can't pick any items, he's equiped with an infinite and powerfull canon (it reminds me a cheat code from 2097, the old school members will confirm... or correct ;)).
- ghost management. For a speed laper like me, it's awesome. You can race as usual without ghost, with your best one but also with the ghost of the pilot of your friendlist the closest from your record (the one just in front of you), and you can do the same with the guy just in front of you in the rankings, even if he's not on your friend list. It's very enternaining ! :D
- The handling/gameplay : IMO it's simply the best wipeout on this aspect.
Al will give is thoughts on that, to me it's a mix of HD (with side shifts and BRs) and older wipeouts (2097 is the closer IMO) for the floaty/slidy ship's behaviour. Like in older wipeouts, at the higher speed you reallyyyyy have to anticipate the turns to avoid the walls. Wall hits don't stops you neat, but the slow down is significant (i compared with my ghosts ;)). Lines still rules !
- weapon : atm i didn't saw something new except the qirex proto weaponry or the rockets which are one for the speed ships, 2 for the agility's ones and 3 for the fighters. The slow down from weapon hit is less significant than on HD (well, if your hitted by two close range rocket shoot you'll stop anyway :lol).
Yes, we can regret the lack of racebox mode, tournaments (even if that way we'll have less 12 empire climb's races C class, pilot assist extreme on :p), a game based on campaign (offline, online), the details changing the sl/tt competition (no turbos), but in any case we can say that game was made quickly or casualy. The devs did a great job and it's the must have of the psvita, even more than uncharted golden abyss.
The devs did some choices, it's respectable, but we can disagree and tell them.
karl Jones already talked of an incoming DLC, maybe it's still time to implement some stuffs in that one that makes old timer (the base) fans happy and more enthusiasts with the game.
- racebox with tt/sl/sr/combat/tournaments/zone.
- custom controls
- turbos for each lap of sl/tt
- patch for loading time
- more tracks and teams
- livery editor (as promised)
- time trial online (:p)

Nice review, would you consider this game, the best in the series to introduce new player in the franchise ? because i tried to introduced WipEout in WipEout HD to many of my friends but they stop playing at flash speed because the game became too hard and they hit a lot of wall (even in Moa Therma and Anualpha Pass )
also i agree with the decision of Studio Liverpool to remove the turbo boost for speed lap (dont really care for time trial) since everyone is using his turbo at the end of the lap to get the boost in the second lap and that make you use 2 turbo in a lap and making half of your lap useless because you dont use the turbo until the end...

All of those should be free except track and teams (and new gameplay modes.)
DLC was done the right way in HD (very much less so in Pulse, and PurE while ideal is not viable now unfortunately) so I'd like to see more of that instead of nickels here and dimes there.

3 best reasons to get 2048. That ghost feature sound, well, amazing! I remember battling, and losing, O_BRs ghost om Amphirev for 2 weeks. It's real motivation when the ghost is someone you know :p
Thanks for the rundown, Leungbok. I kinda look forward to it now, despite it's obvious shortcomings - I'll wish for crappy weather this summer, so I'll have an excuse ready to buy a Vita!

I agree with just about everything he said
1) combat mode is not good, incredibly choppy because you have to stay in the mix, not too worried about this however, in that I will never play it again after the game is beaten
2) while Leungbok thinks that the racebox missing is a shortcoming, and should have been in, I think it is terrible that it has been removed from what would have been a really incredible experience. A very bad oversight as to knowing what wipeout fans love about the game. I am hoping it gets back in soon, even being told it would be in in a month would be great, Single and multiplayer choices, that is where wipeout is really at. It knocks the game down over one letter grade if not more because of this oversight.
3) I wouldn't say the best controls:) however, it is imo the best of the last 5 games by far, and if they added custom controls and racebox (or exact equivalent), it would start getting into the mix of the first three games for me. I really love the gameplay
4) not really floaty, but the flying is great. I think it gets in the air more than HD because of the speed increase. The slide is like pure xl combo, you can get out of control easy if you are not on the ball.
5) the game is far harder despite the wider track sections than HD, it is not even close. The skill cuts, are skill cuts, and it is difficult many times to stay off the wall
6) A newbie can perform well in this because of the wide tracks, but it will be very difficult for them after season one if they follow the easy routes, they will not get elite passes to unlock things. That is where the racebox would help immensely, no new players are going to be able to unlock everything in single player campaign.
7) I like that the campaign is difficult, some things near impossible, that is great, just make is so you eventually open everything up if you play enough hours, also once again a racebox sort of thing would be good to help this along.
8) turbos would be great in tt, but it is very fast already. I think they should be in, but not a deal breaker. For speed lap, I can see why they took them out, but have no real opinion on it as I don't play that as much. I think most speed lapers would like it in, so I'll side with that

A better introducer to the serie than HD ? hmmm, i'm not really sure. Maybe the difficulty at the begining of the campaign is lesser than HD, because of the wider tracks and the comfortable C speed class. It's more accessible at first IMO, but if they plan to finish the game 100% with all the elite pass, it's another story ! At C and B speed classes, the main routes of the tracks is accessible for newcomers except maybe sol and altima, and the AI is easy to beat to half of 2049 season. Pilot assist also can help, it gives more the feeling of being in control than on HD and have 2 settings (normal and extreme) but overrun are still possible with it on, the ship's choice also can help newcomers depending if they want to be fast, destructive or stable. But A and A+ speed classes and skill cuts mastering are only for experimented pilots (except for the one of empire climb ;)).
combat mode is not good, incredibly choppy because you have to stay in the mix, not too worried about this however, in that I will never play it again after the game is beaten
Lol, the same for me i can't win the last combat event in elite on altima, i have to rely on lucky pick up and my best is 95pts :brickwall
I like that the campaign is difficult, some things near impossible, that is great, just make is so you eventually open everything up if you play enough hours, also once again a racebox sort of thing would be good to help this along.
I totally agree, when i jumped in the all new sol track in single race at A class, i missed a lot a mode to learn a bit the track. Unlock, at least, the speed laps only when you finish the campaign is a bit tough, lol !

Just confirmed from kateru ( SP) that TIME TRIAL and SINGLE RACE are NOT on the racing grid like Speed Laps. This means we have to select from events, this is absolutely horrible, having to find an event to compete on. I don't even think all the tracks are opened up for tt's and single races at all the speed classes, and even if everything was, that is not the way to choose a race. Once again, back to the main thing, I sincerely hope SL is looking at this and saying,
1) " ok, we like what we did, but see these shortcomings on the front end, let's put something in place so our game will last much longer and players can choose what they like to play and controls they want to use.".
2) Let's hope they are not saying this, "screw them, this is the game and that's final, we will add tracks, and ship skins, but nothing else."
At this time it seems #2 is quite possible since there has been no hint of any response to important questions.

This is too bad because it's really a small thing to add. Only thing I can think of is: Wipeout doesn't sell much in Japan, so Studio liverpool doesn't care too much at this point, and they're preparing a day one patch for US and PAL release. I'm still confident.

If they are so insistent against a racebox, then do this for SP AND MP
Where the speed lap grid is, when you select one of the boxes, it asks you to select
1) speed lap
2) single race
3) time trial
4) zone (speed class wouldn't matter, just track)
5) combat
You could do this easily for single and multiplayer. Options would be nice on each of these selections after, but at this point, standard racing on these on each mode would be good.
Obviously, RACEBOX is far superior to this, but at least this would allow you to race what you want in both single and multi player.
Options for these modes for laps, weapons, assists would make in a replayable game for wipeout enthusiasts ( us). Things like create tournaments off the box grid would also be welcome.

Because of the way I like to steer, I have to use the single brake right now, it's awful, but better than the standard controls for me. It is slower to use this though because of the way you need to brake and sideshift

I am bumping this thread from page two in case SL decides to check it out. This is the most important thread for 2048 at the moment since these are items that absolutely need to be in the game. I have edited it, and sent to Sony. I hope it gets to the right place. Here is the edit now. There are no stars in the letter, when I copied and pasted, it added them here
Hello, my name is Al Sartwell.

Hello Al, I'm sure the devs have already read your (and our) request.
https://twitter.com/#!/DrStuLovegrove/status/167603808275410946
They won't ignore them, because they want to make some DLC for WipEout 2048.
And they know if we can't play the game how we want (free play, racebox offline and online), the customers will just finish the offline campaign, will try to finish the online campaign if they meet enough people, and after, they will play other games.
Why will a customer pay for a DLC if he can't play it in its own way ?

Yeah, hope it's not too late though if they decide to add these things. I am not optimistic that it will happen, but am still hoping we can get a racebox very soon, and not after having to beat a whole bunch of events. My guess is we are only getting new events at this point and there is no plan whatsoever to add a good racebox online/adhoc/ offline feature with all the options of previous games we love.
Campaign should be about unlocking ships/tracks, ect
Racebox is about enjoying the game how you like it

Yeah, I read that, not sure what that means, I hope he is telling us yes, without saying it, but it could also be an answer just to hold off any more questions regarding the situation. I'm not sure what the big deal would be if they were adding race box or custom controls, features that should already be in there. The surprise updates should be stuff like tracks, ships, ect, not standard wipeout stuff.
If they said they were adding these, my complaints would be gone ( unless racebox was neutered of course :) )

Hey, temet, could you ask him about adhoc mode, maybe this question. "when adhoc is played, you cannot even choose a track or a speed. Is this mode not finished, or are we not going to be allowed to choose track and speed in this mode and be forced to play whatever the game chooses ?"
This should be the question because it is right to the point without being rude.

They can't speak before the 22nd February, maybe they fear that the game will be described "unfinished". Look about Ridge Racer Vita, it severely got down by critics before his released.

They don't answer a damn thing on Facebook anyway. Stuart love grove on twitter answers questions, or at least replies. I sent an email, but it had nothing to do with adhoc.
I go to say this though, if this is what we are going to get for adhoc, it is crap. I suspect at least this one part was unfinished, but probably nothing else.

They definitely read this forum. I was checking out Twitter the other day when the forum was down and I saw one of the Liverpool people give a shout to Rob about the attack.
I'm sure that at least internally this request has gained traction, even if they are not actively working on it at the moment. It's been bumped for so long and has many people agreeing after all. Once Sony tells them to get back to work, these features might come up in an update.
At least I hope so. For God's sake do it.

I'm still so sad and disappointed about the lack of custom controls. I guess it saved me $300, but getting a PSP at launch and Wipeout Pure was a great experience, and it would have been nice to repeat it seven years later.

Its nice to see and intelligent and engaging thread with genuine concerns listed in such details, good read, not that I would expect anything else either here tbh ;)
I picked up my copy on release day and have to say absolutely love it! It truely is a beautiful game. I would urge anyone with a joy for Wipeout to pick it up and not to hold off for whatever personal reason they have.
I'm sure the people that matter do silently read such posts and take concerns on board, I have no doubt that custom controls will be introduced given time. Without it the game is totally lost. Everyone has their own unique button layout preferences and without the option to customise the game will suffer for it. I would really like to see all 3 control methods available for complete customization.
I have yet to try ad-hoc, any of the AR features or voice control.
I also take on board previous comments re TT and Racebox etc and would like these implemented over time which I'm sure they will be.
I was unable to complete HD and Fury on Elite so do doubt I will also struggle here to finish some of the harder challenges yet it will never take away from such a fantastic release!
Love it, love the feel of it, 2048 is magic.

Basically, we should have custom control and even "extensions for multiplayer". Well, multiplayer cannot be worst right? So it's good new :)

We’re looking into other things to enhance the toolset of the game. So we’re looking on to custom controls, potentially some kind of multiplayer extension […] Another way to look at it is that patches, updates, DLC and packs it a way to respond to feedback. If people are saying that they want this and that we can respond to it.
There you go ;)

"potentially some kind of multiplayer extension"
This is not definite, and mentions no racebox, adhoc, OR single player time trials or single races. I feel we are going to get a 1/10 version of what is really needed. We need to pursuade that we need a full racebox feature for single player, adhoc, and online. Otherwise it will only be a portion of what is actually needed in terms of gameplay options.
This stuff has NEVER been left out of a wipeout game on release, so at this point there should be no assumption that " they will fix it, don't worry". This sort of tactic will get us nothing we need. The only thing that appears to be likely is custom controls, which is very good. This should have been in from the beginning, but I'm happy with this if it's soon.

May have been mentioned but using the right analog stick to control thrust and/or directional air brakes would be awesome. I've noticed that using the left analog stick to steer is the best for making smooth turns so this would balance the grip out, leaving the shoulder buttons for pickup and fire.
First post btw, hi all :)

The most important thing for me with this game was investing in the Trigger Grip by PDP. Best $18 I've ever spent. I just can't play 2048 (or ANY game that makes use of the shoulder buttons) comfortably without it. My hands are less cramped with it too, which results in less numbness. Works and feels great. I simply feel like I'm holding an over-sized Dual Shock controller. Just awesome. Combining it with the "Wipeout" controls configuration is a marriage made in heaven. Pretty much mimics the feel of playing WOHD on PS3. Can't recommend it enough and consider it a must-have for all zoners. Here's a link to it for anyone who hasn't seen it:

@ JABBERJAW: Cool, and nice price, but that's not quite the same thing. While it certainly helps with ergonomics, it doesn't have triggers that operate the shoulder buttons, which is a major selling point of the one that I use. I gotta have the triggers.

No you cant charge while playing, which sucked, so I opened it up, and changed the locking mechanism to a hole for the charger to fit, then sealed the lock part to stay ( you can still get the vita out without damaging it. I had both of these holders for the ps and liked the one I showed better, I could reach the buttons easier. Both were good though, and if want to charge while playing the round handled one is for you. Both are far better than just holding the system. The system should actually been designed with handle grips right on it, would have gotten some great press I think

I am bumping this thread as for a reminder. We need more people on this issue, or we are going to get nada. I have a bad feeling right now that nothing is coming except custom controls. There STILL has been zero response on this issue. Maybe they are waiting until there are no complaints anymore, so they can say, " there aren't that many complaints". Once again there would be no reason not to answer this, it could potentially stop people from getting ticked off with the lack of features. I dont mind waiting for 1 or 2 months if I knew a full fledged racebox was coming for single player, adhoc and online. I just got the feeling that the options will be left out of 2 of these modes. For example, online gets fixed and you can choose as before, BUT single player is kept as is, and adhoc isn't even changed at all. Then it turns out they cannot work on the game anymore, gotta go to a new one. We have to drill this in to fix this right the first time, and it needs to be more than three people that continue to bring up this topic.

Honestly Al, I contacted 2 of the main French websites (jeuxvideos.com and psvitagen.fr (dedicated vita this one)) to explain the problem and ask for a news on the topic, but I didn't even had an answer...
Kaori sent an email to them again because he lost his online campaign progress for the 3rd time, and he took the opportunity to remind some lacks in the game.

I've emailed Studio Liverpool too, and mentioned it on a couple of their facebook threads, but like everybody else have heard nothing back. It's encouraging that many of the reviews online criticise the lack of features and customisable controls.
At the moment I think SL have a lot on their hands, just trying to get the game they released working as it should do, without trying to do a complete overhaul of online, plus add racebox, and customisable controls.
I fully agree that the game is incomplete as it stands, but I think a little patience is needed on this one. SL have made it clear that it was never a "one-shot release", and that the game will expand with time.
JABBERJAW
15th March 2012, 06:10 PM

@ leungbok, there is no speed lap head to head, that is what they are calling the current model with the ghost options :(
leungbok
15th March 2012, 07:13 PM
Yes Jabberjaw, very disappointing !
as a reminder of what is missing on the game :
absolutely necessary :
- racebox or racebox-like online & offline (also adhoc) with ability to choose the type of event (single race, tournament, combat), the speed class (from C to A+ for all modes), and some customisable options (weapon off/on, BRs on/off, lobby public/friends or invited only).
- Complete customisable controls.
- Time trial available offline (maybe the same way as speed laps are included in the map) with, why not, settings fitting with the campaign : C class = 2 laps, B class = 3 laps, A class = 5 laps, A+ class = 10 laps.
- leaderboards for timetrials and online races to make it entertaining in the long term
Highly anticipated :
- New tracks and ships.
- New modes (the "zombie" like mode, why not ;))
- new campaign (2051 as an example :p)
- augmented reality (as announced)
- Wipeout Hd/fury tracks and ships for cross play
- rewards to unlock (artworks or ship's skins as an example)
- livery editor
- possibility to change the voice's commentary to what will hit the player rather than what he just picked up.
"would makes the game totally awesome but less crucial" :
- time trials and speed laps online (ala pure)
- one turbo per lap available for time trial and speed lap modes.
- kick option (to fix the "wrecks ships" when some players are in a lobby and don't even race. Very annoying, mostly since the ship is "solid" at the very start of the race)
- add the current speed of the ship on the hud in mph or km.
- replay mode
- Several hud's choice.
- track editor (:p)
feel free to add stuff ^_^
JABBERJAW
15th March 2012, 10:07 PM
You got my wants almost exact. As we go maybe we can add to your list.
1) ADHOC racebox, EXACTLY the same as online. If this is not specifically stated to them, it will not be touched
2). Transparent ships for first 5 seconds of the race, as well as to any ships that don't move
3). Single race offline as well with all the leader board stuff you said
Colonel
15th March 2012, 11:31 PM
No mention of Zone in your post leung, I guess it just slipped your mind. I think an easy way to present Racebox would be to keep the big arrow shape they have, but add another line, so it would go C, B, A, A+, Zone. Then if you select a speed category, it presents you with 3 options: TT, SL, Tournament.
Something Jan mentioned ages ago is online Zone, as opposed to Zone Battle. This would be awesome, although I guess it would have to be a 1vs1 thing. Would still rule though :)

About this leungbok... I've never played a game with a kick option, is it simply where the host is able to select any player in the lobby and boot them out? Or would it only apply to ships that had been stationary for 2 races for example? If it is the former I can imagine it being abused by crap players, who would just kick really fast players out of their lobby.
Maybe an automatic kick system would be better, where you leave the lobby if your ship doesn't move for an entire race.

As for me, I've become a mobile gamer recently, so having HD/Fury on Vita is a tiny little dream. Especially after I tried cross-play function, was really impressed. I guess, WO series is more suitable for handhelds, but it's just an opinion. :)

Wrap party for a game that's unfinished, without racebox, custom controls and many more options we've been beggin for? (And that are unpleasantly missing, being mentioned by not only fans, but reviewers as well). No wonder people are not liking this this new version.
I know you guys worked hard on this game, and it shows, but it shouldn't surprise you that once the initial novelty wears out people quickly lose interest. There are not many reasons to come back to a game that doesn't offer options we used to have.
By taking out the option to choose how to race one another, forcing you to race random tracks on slow classes only, even on ad-hoc. By doing this you took the competitive edge away. I really wanted to like this game more, but I can't look past these design decisions we were all hoping would be adressed in the 1.02 patch. Here's hoping for our most beloved SL to awknowledge these requests and let us, franchise-long and fans in general know that our messages, e-mails and twitter requests will be implemented in this otherwise mostly perfect iteration of WipEout. Thanks! :)

Good message. I don't have much hope right now, mainly because it hasn't even been acknowledged in 3 months time. For our NA tourney, we are just going to race A+ speed class races at the same time, and go by times, because of this.
The thing I am seriously worried about is Adhoc though. I think even if a update is made, this will be completely forgotten. In the letter I had sent them last November I believe, I had also talked about the importance of a LAN HD feature since they were working on HD some. At some point online HD will be gone and there will be no way to play the game competitively ( NO, the crappy split screen doesn't count. It's choppy as heck, and you can't even get a turbo start)

WipEout Fusion called itself the "biggest and boldest WipEout" ever, too. And, well, it did not feature custom controls either :beer

At least it had control options, and you could play someone on the track and speed you wanted

The funniest part is that it's possible to choose the track, speed class and even the number of laps on cross-play with wipeout HD which is only a vita possibilities demo !

I cannot believe we are getting screwed like this. They KNOW that we DO NOT like how online campaign is done. It is NOT FUN AT ALL. They know many many fans are incredibly pissed about simply not being able to choose a track and a speed. Yet basically saying " screw you" ( even nicely), you will play this crappy way, we don't care if you don't like it.
I sincerely hope this is addressed, sooner rather than later. It's the worst wipeout decision ever made to leave this out, and that's saying a lot with fusion in the equation?
At least give us an option in ADHOC!

Tsss, they never answered me about my 4 losses of online campaign... but they replied to the message just after mine. They are unable to say "no", "no racebox in future", "no recovery of online campaign", "no no no" !

Multiplayer is not so bad actually. I quite enjoy it. I would prefer some form of custom options however for it.

Sorry vdek, have to agree with the others, this is my favourite game but the online is a joke. I only give it a run every week or two when I crave some multiplayer and forget how bad the choices are.

Even if SL don't plan to include a racebox in an uncoming update or DLC, which is REALLY REALLY REAAAALLLY NOT SATISFYING...
...maybe they could still do a step to our concerns : If they can add in the offline campaign map, nodes for time trials and single races the way speed laps are already included (40 nodes for each mode), zone is less crucial when all the tracks can be played in the main campaign.
Also if it's possible to add possibility to disable the online campaign's objectives, and in that case to split the choice between two events : combat and single races. That way the vote will be done only on the track choice (in that case if a choice for speed class is also possible to add, that's great. And to make A+ available for multiplayer single races).
With those little changes (not sure but i imagine it's far less work than designing a full racebox mode) it could be possible to have some fun races with friends using the vit'as party app.
But again, it's REALLY REALLY REAAAALLLY NOT SATISFYING...

It`s amazing, we are still being ignored and yet, I rekon, they will lose more customers than they think.
Lets see about DLC coming! Cos, there is alot of potiental in there!
Honestly, I don`t know what to do.
Al, if you planning a request?, do it if you can and I will support it for you.

They're not "ignoring" you, the community reps on the facebook page just aren't allowed to talk about upcoming features just yet. They're actually quite responsive to anything you might ask them.

The strangest thing is: Sony says VITA means life and the most important feature of the VITA is to stay in touch with friends. There are a lot of features in 2048 that give you updates on what friends are doing and if they beat you and you can race their ghosts, if it's working. BUT to really get into contact with your friends by playing the game as it should be on A+ speed on the tracks you want and with the options to race with weapons on/off is not there?!
For over 5 years Al and I are organising real life tournaments of Wipeout. Every year there are people coming from all over the world to meet each other and play Wipeout together. That's what I call: getting in touch with friends!!! Now this year, I think I am not going to organise a real life Wipeout Tournament because we can not play 2048 how we want it! We need custom controls and racebox in every mode, no exception. We can play all other Wipeout titles how we want to, so please Studio Liverpool: make it so we can play 2048 on our next convention.
Peace out Mad-Ice

Don't they understand how psyched the 2048 ( not HD) community would be if they put it in. A lot of praise sells a lot of games, as opposed to a lot of criticism.
Vdek, they are not planning on doing racebox despite everyone being pissed to hell.
They are ignoring and not answering the entire pissed off wipeout community on their site. They won't answer on their page in public. I believe they are hoping it will blow over. I cannot for the life of me understand this lack of understanding the nonsense of no racebox
@ leungbok, I was thinking the same thing regarding the grids, just give us something!!!
Grid of 40 for TT, sr online on the map. (3,4,5,10 laps for row)
Grid of 40 for TT, sr offline on the map
Scroll through on Adhoc for track ( this cannot be difficult), choose speed.
( or grid of 40, but there is no map on Adhoc, just a track)
Certainly this would not be too difficult and would fit into the current game
If we do get this, this would be fun, however it would still suck compared to HD options. At this point I'll take anything that resembles a reasonable online experience, even if it means we loose every friggin mode that was in hd besides SR.

I'd prefer HD style Combat/Eliminator instead of Timed. It's my favorite mode and I play it every time I boot up Wipeout.... It's gonna lose all the fun.

Just a remark.
Several people said they didn't have the time to implement online racebox.
How on earth is it faster to implement online campaign? Taking also into account they already did it a good online on Pulse and HD, so they wouldn't have started from scratch.
Since we'll never get racebox, the minimum acceptable would be for me :
Step 1. A new icon near the online campaign, let's call it "freeplay"
Step 2. Choose combat or race session damn it!!!!
Step 3. At least 2 sections : slow classes (C and B) and fast classes (A and A+). Choosing the class would be better but maybe this would be acceptable, even if not satisfying.
Then the vote between 2 tracks, with different number of laps, etc.
This would be a light modification compared to adding a racebox, keeping the vote implementation...

@temet, I had sent them an email giving them options like this within the current system for Adhoc, online and single player. I also added that it wasn't even remotely as good as racebox, noting it only allowed single races, and that every other good option was out, but at least we could play each other.
You are right temet regarding racebox, it was taken OUT of the HD code that they used. It could have been left in. Same with custom conntrols. Full blame is on whoever made that decision.

I've been looking forward to this game for a long time and tempted to buy a vita. I have $350 cash set aside that I can spend at any instant to go pick up a vita and the game... yet this has just been sitting in the back of my drawer for a while now and after reading this thread it looks like I might as well put it back in the bank. I've been on the fence for a few months now, "should I really buy a vita just for WipEout? I did so for the PSP and Pulse... but the Vita is so expensive. Well if 2048 turns out to be great I'll buy the Vita just for WipEout."
Looks like that ship has sailed. Back to HD and Pulse. Have fun guys!

Strange thing happened actually. I asked them about the DLC announcement (where it was and stuff) on the Facebook group.
I got a notification via gmail, telling that they answered (not via private message) me there. Second later another notification came, saying that they "commented on their status update". But when I pressed "go to comments" link and it sent me to that thread, I didn't see this comment. I guess they reconsidered and deleted it (why?). All I have is this notification in gmail:

Funny thing, they reacted right after I posted an ad about selling Vita (you can see on the screenshot that I even got a reply on this ad). Now I don't know what to do: wait or forget about Vita and sell it. =/

Funnily enough this word : 'con' in english fits perfectly to the same french word meaning idiot

As a Pessimist I guess the DLC is just the from-the-beginning-promised Augmented Reality-Thingy that couldn't made it in the game yet because SL hit the deadline, the rest of the HD-ships for crossplay and some of the current 2048 tracks just backwards. Thats all. Ah! And don't forget the bugs that would be caused in 2048 (probably in HD too) by the DLC cuz SL don't test their stuff enough so they can make a patch for the patch (http://cdn.overclock.net/4/49/496ad0af_yo-dawg-xzibit-48.jpeg)
As a Realist... online features for pulse are off because the vita was coming up (and it was old, I know). Online rangs were sacrificed for crossplay, also it caused some bugs and messed up HD. Everything for 2048 which has no Racebox.
And beside ruining the last past games, IMO(!) SL is just this: "*server off* *server on* *server off* *server on* lets call this maintenance so it looks like we are working on something"

At this point I've given up hoping they will patch in customizable controls to this Vita launch title, and now I've switched to hoping they release a PS3 version with a whole bunch of improvements, including custom controls.

Hopefully the announcement comes soon, and even more so, the actual racebox. It would be nice to actually race eachother at the tournament, rather than A+ challenges head to head. DLC announcement coming soon has been over a month now I believe; that is not soon :(. Why does this need to be a surprise? Give us some hope here if it's going to happen.

I'm just saying, don't say " soon" for two months. After checking for over 50 straight days for new info, it has started getting agitating again, like waiting three months for even an acknowedgement of the problems, only this time, I actually am excited to see what we are going to get. I'm only hoping we are not going to get screwed on the Adhoc end of it. I still have a really bad feeling Adhoc will remain unplayable, even though eventually that will be the only multiplayer option available. That shouldn't be hard either. Track choice, speed choice, ship choice. Right from the same screen that is there now. I really want this for the NA tournament rather than A + challenges
