So yeah, the companies are at it again (http://uk.gamespot.com/playstation-vita/forum/ps-vita-forced-firmware-updates-and-spying-61489029). Anyone who owns one or is interested in getting one should either reconsider or be careful of what you do with it. Someone slap them already?

It's quite fitting the 3DS is destroying it in sales too. :) Down with the Big Brother State!

This is what happens when people stop asking questions, I guess.

Oh, good grief.

I knew this kind of bullshit would happen if we had a dedicated gaming forum - I'll be bollocksed if I'm going to let this kind of scaremongering propagate on this board. If this is the kind of thing that's going to be posted then it's absolutely worthless - might as well go post on gamefaqs.

Anyone with a clue will damn well know that any restrictions placed on connecting the Vita to a PC are all about preventing piracy and nothing to do with "spying".

Martin, I thought better of you. :-

Wonder...
On on hand,it is a measure to prevent piracy
On the other hand,NWO nuts will treat it as a case of companies spying.(Just saying)

Why is it fitting?

Not everybody wants to play Super Mario and Friends Turbo Kart Extreme 14 with a migraine. The Vita is a great piece of gaming hardware - if it fails it won't be "fitting" at all if tired Nintendo franchises or smart phone games are the only option for portable gaming, it'll be crap for gamers who actually want something better.

And why is it a "Big Brother State"?

Because some wee paranoid, sensationalism seeking warrior on the internet says so?

Yeah - any hardware product that tries to enforce content restrictions is doomed. Just like that stupid iPod thing that Apple came up with - having the gall to insist you use their software and preventing you from sharing the content you have to buy from their store. Oh, and that Kindle Fire thing - totally locked in, I'll be surprised if anyone buys one - the people have a voice. The people must be heard. Occupy the Internets and make your voice heard!

Honestly, this is complete and utter garbage, people - if this is an example of kind of discussion that's going to do the rounds on here then the site is better off without a gaming forum. This kind of crap belongs elsewhere.

How to beat piracy: offer a better service than pirates.
-Gabe Newell (More or less paraphrased.)

Textbook example: I got Fallout 3 GOTY the other day through Steam. It was cheap and easy. I could've pirated it and it would've worked just as well (If not better.) But I had to go look for it on a website. Steam provided an even easier way than that: I didn't have to go look for it at all as it was right in my face.

Not one other company has got the message. Not one.
And this is Sony. The brilliant creators and curators of the rootkit called SecuROM.
I don't believe that they're spying on your porn movies. Honestly, they've got better things to do.
But for ****'s sake DRM has to disappear from the entire universe. I'm sick of it.

It's getting ridiculous how many restrictions there are on this device and the use you can make of it. You have to install proprietary software to connect it through USB and manage content (I hate iTunes and the crap Apple is pulling with it for this among other reasons), you can have only one account on the device (Because Vitas are cheap as dust and every member of the family will get one right?), and now you might not be able to copy MP3s if it requires a firmware update first? I mean, what else is there that you can't do? At this point I have to ask because nobody knows. I don't.

Rob, if you'd rather this thread didn't exist, then by all means delete it, I just thought that this information would be of use to someone, especially after Sony changed their ToS to stop people from suing them in a class action lawsuit (fortunately, they did allow an opt-out then went back on having the arbitration in there altogether, something Microsoft aren't going to do with their Live ToS any time soon, I fear).

I can understand that my source is far from the best, but it was either that or a PSP hack site, and I wasn't prepared to break any forum rules. Since the news isn't spreading quickly, I can't use a more reputable one, as much as I'd like to.

I'd agree that saying it's Big Brother State with Sony, it's far from one, given that there are more CCTV cameras in Britain than there are people, It's better to point that accusation in that direction, given that you'd have evidence to back it up; slightly.

The Online pass scheme they have going on isn't about the used game market, either; that's about control. if they weren't, why would they expire? Given that Arkham City's blocks out single player content, I'd keep an eye on what Sony do with this scheme. Maybe it's their way of making us pay for the PSN? Unorthodox, but it would work.

I also did not want to seem like I was spreading sensationalist material around. Only thing I thought about making this thread is that someone will be affected and possibly won't know about it. After all, this could put someone off the unit altogether, and what's one sale going to do to Sony? Nothing.

But please, don't forget that they're backing the SOPA, and I really hope I don't have to go into the ramifications of their "prevention" of piracy. I can, in PM or a thread I made should you wish me to.

SOPA and PIPA should be eradicated from the universe first thing in line.
There's already too much incriminating evidence that shows that these companies will use the powers granted by these laws to further their own goals should they come to pass.
Sorry if this particular point sounds "bigbrothery" but it's true. Look no further than WMG taking down videos it didn't have any rights to, false content matches on Youtube to companies that don't exist, Universal Media censoring stuff it doesn't like completely outside of the DMCA, Viacom censoring stuff it doesn't like with the same reason...
SOPA and PIPA pass? They can start doing it. Legally. ****'s ****ing scary to be honest.

I do hope everyone knows about SOPA/PIPA and the threat they pose... if not, please educate yourselves on the matter (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pkjK3fllT3Oojtl3tsk5CC2cnIIKiWGodPHGdDAknjQ/edit?hl=en_US&pli=1) and do your own research.

See you get me started on that and this happens. Sorry for the offtopic.

You know, I think that you know it's not a rookit.

But hey, you have the stage - explain in depth why you think it's a rootkit so the lawyers at least know who to point the finger at if your accusations bring this site under the microscope.

Unless you're prepared to stand by your accusations with factual evidence, then I suggest you stop propagating misinformation.

Either the discussion on this gaming forum is factual and rational, or it's gone.

About the first point; That's a null point. In fact that borders on fanboy to be honest, I'm quite happy playing Pushmo on the 3DS, which is great fun. But if you want to play Another generic FPS that prents to be original by having rehashed characters and always paled by Call of Duty 6 but even the developers are bored of it now and have handed it to other companies. or cinematic movie genre which works amazing on PS3 but why the hell would I play it on the go 6

I'll still be getting a Vita but stuff like this is bullcrap, I should be able to do what I want with my console, who says I'm going to pirate with it?

Wow... that's quite the assumption, given that CoD and the like are the types of games I hate the most. Well done.

Since you seem justified in your outrage, explain to me what it is that you want to do with your console that Sony is preventing you doing here?

I'm just talking about the majority of games on Next-gen systems...not your taste. ;)

I want to be able to run homebrew, emulators (legally owning the games of course), The vita needs to be a powerhouse device and not some portable games console...otherwise it's no fun. It'll end up as pitiful as the PSP ended up which something I don't want to see. As with the "other OS" thing, Sony are pushing their power further and further. It's not something I like to see from anyone and especially not from my favorite games company.

No you weren't, you were gloating at one manufacturer selling more hardware than another manufacturer as if that was a good thing for consumer choice.

I want to be able to run homebrew, emulators (legally owning the games of course), The vita needs to be a powerhouse device and not some portable games console...otherwise it's no fun. Then the question you have to ask yourself is, do you want to see titles with the kinds of bells and whistles you got with WipEout Pulse on the PSP or do you want to run homebrew?

How did the sequel to a million selling title (WipEout Pure) go on to sell just 14,000 copies in the month of its launch when the user base had expanded exponentially?

WipEout Pulse cost a lot of money to make and the instant, far-reaching piracy of it guaranteed that the PSP would not see another WipEout sequel made.

Those developers who took a couple of years to put the game together? They got nothing in terms of a sales bonus because, due to the piracy, in relative terms there weren't any sales of significance.

That homebrew you covet also enabled people to exploit the game and ruin the online experience for those that bought it legitimately.

So bollocks to homebrew - especially Vita homebrew that doesn't even exist. It's a gaming console and the restrictions placed on its use are what enables the hardware to hit an attainable price point and for a consistent user experience.

If you can't live with those restrictions then vote with your wallet and don't buy one, but don't think for a minute that acting outraged on the internet is going to make Sony forget what happened with the PSP.

I don't even know why I'm bothering here - you know all this because it's been played out in the previous hardware generation. Leaving the hardware open to exploitation leads to a dearth of games and the platform being deserted by third parties.

So, if it's a piece of hardware from "your favourite gaming company", it does seem unusual that you'd be taking any kind of satisfaction from it being outsold by a rival that caters to a different demographic.

Oh, and throwing the fanboy label about so loosely demonstrates the kind of conduct I was hoping to avoid on this forum. I'm hard pressed to remember a gaming discussion that goes well after someone dishes that out, so keep it to yourself in future.
