View Full Version : PSP E1000: Good thing or bad thing?

While I was looking for PS Vita updates, I ended up discovering that Sony has released yet another PSP variant, known as the E1000 (I presume that the E stands for Essentials).
No joke. It's even on Sony's PS UK website: http://uk.playstation.com/psp-e1000/
There is only one thing about this. It's going to be PAL format only, from what I hear. Oh, and it doesn't have Wi-fi or Stereo sound.
So, is this a good PSP unit for on the go, or a waste of time and money?

The PSP has been multiregion from day one. At least for games, probably not for the irrelevant UMD video. I don't know where you could have gotten that idea from. :)
No wifi is a dealbreaker for me, though. What would be the point of my 3rd PSP (the other 2 still work) if it's not for multiplayer?

Its a great idea, i think its mainly aimed for kids and parents who cant afford the latest gizmos and handheld media...
Its not aimed at hardcore gamers, thats what the Vita is for.
But im sure a lot of parents will be pleased to see a cheaper handheld device that they can buy for the kids for christmas!

If you were sure you would never be able or want to play psp games against others, this would be great. The lack of wifi kind of kills it. On the other hand, if it's cheap enough you could grab one for an extra psp, save your good for multiplayer.

This looks incredibly stupid, sorry, but you can a nice used psp 1,2,3 thousand for 100 dollars or less, AND have wifi.

gross... why will parents by 2nd hand when they can get a brand new one for the same price!
Also a lot of parents dont like there children surfing the web unattended... and having no Wifi isn't such a bad thing, i never use mine.
its for gaming on the go! and to keep kids quiet in the car!

The deal-breaker for me is lack of ad-hoc wi-fi. I suppose it couldn't have been avoided, but it does mean that multiplayer is impossible. If it had ad-hoc mode, I would be getting one.
I also just saw xEik's comment about the release location. Whoops! Let me rephrase that:
It will only be released in PAL regions. Not sure why, though. I should have caught that before. :) That's not to say that if you had the patience (and money) to import one, it would be useless.

it looks like the dumbest thing ever
how much does it cost to put wifi into something anyway!?!?
it must be about as much as cheap cup of coffee

This is just a cheap version for people who like to game on the go... car journeys, train, bus, flight... i dont think many kids try and get an online game sitting in the back of their moms car, but if you want your psp to play online dont buy it because its not aimed for online play.
I use my console for online gaming and psp for journeys, iv had a psp since release and have never used the wifi.

MegaGeeza, I think you are a minority if you haven't used PSP wifi yet. At least I don't know anyone else who has never used PSP wifi before.
As said before the lack of ad-hoc wifi makes this an outdated console for me even before it is released. I wouldn't buy one for my kids either because sooner or later they would want to play multiplayer against each other and that is impossible without the ad-hoc wifi feature. For me a console without the ability to hook up with other consoles via wifi is simply not 2011, it's more like the old 1990 Nintendo Game Boy times (and even those classic Game Boys could be linked together!). So my judgement for the PSP-E1000 is simply :-

lol, i agree... i always chase a lost cause or the underdog, but i still think its a good idea.
If sony made a PS3 with no internet and was selling it for £125, it would fly off the shelves... not everyone has internet and it still does the same things except play online, my bro has a PS3 but no internet.
iv never used wifi because nobody i know has a psp and i dont sit at home playing it because i use my ps3 for that.
But i wont argue anymore lol, iv lost and your all entitled to your opinions!

Good thing because it makes buzz... maybe this PSP E-1000 will be sold more PSP. New design too, you like or not, but it's new.
But bad thing because no Wifi (stereo is available with headphones), and some best games of PSP have a good multiplayer or other online capacities.
And a unused PSP-3000 is 20€ more expensive... it's not so expensive.
After all, it's a good thing, more choice, even if it seems Sony take people for idiot :twisted

I do like how it looks though. Did they take tv out off as well? It just seems weird, like it was said before," how much does wifi cost?
Yes it would look nicer for a Christmas present, much better than a used one, and an easy purchase as opposed to looking for a nice used one. I wouldn't get my kids one because I want to play against them.

Definitely a kids-only psp with no tv out. That's really too bad as it looks nice cosmetically, then you realize they took ask the features out!! On the plus side, they're continuing umd support, in a way.

Let me rephrase that:
It will only be released in PAL regions.
Ah OK, sorry for the misunderstanding. :P
For those of you who don't see the usefulness of AdHoc wifi: you probably haven't played any of the Monster Hunters. Multiplayer hunting is lots of fun and makes the game much better than restricting yourself to solo hunting (which is entirely possible but a bit hardcore). Maybe that's the reason they are not releasing it in Japan. ;)
WO multiplayer is also a blast and totally different from CPU only races. It's just that I prefer collaborative to competitive multiplayer.

I like the matte finish a lot better than the glossy finish that the current psp has but other than that it doesn't look that good. Besides the lack of wi-fi, I don't like how the row of buttons below the screen kind of stick out.
I am also pretty sure that you can't change the brightness on it.
