Monster Hunter. Hands down.
My save file has continued over 3 games and has just passed 400 hours.

Judging it just by time spent on it alone; nothing else would come close for me :)

I second that haydn. Monster Hunter has had me spend way more time on it already than on any PSP wipeout ever. MHF1 has been 400+ hours for me, some endless X-Link night sessions with people from all over the world. I barely reached 200 hours on MHF2 because I switched to Unite very early.

My favorite handheld game would probably be Lunar Knights for the DS. It was part of the Boktai series that started on the GBA, which was pretty cool also.

most of my portable gaming was done on a gameboy sp since i never bought the psp :( top three were
1-Golden Sun (both games)
2-FF tactics
3-FF IV

but maybe i'll buy the new vita thing sony is releasing soon?

Funny you should say that - my brother ordered his first smart phone yesterday, and was asking me lots of questions about Android last night. One of them was "Can you get snake on it?"

My favourite portable games would have to be either WipEout Pure and Vice City Stories on the PSP. I got so many hours of play out of both of those, and I don't normally play portable games.

California Games on my Atari Lynx was pretty good, too! ;)

Pure and pulse apart ;), monster hunter freedom unite, phantasy star portable 2 (a shame that there's so much cheaters :turd), and soul calibur broken destiny is amazing technically (but poor solo modes) !!

Silver is better :P Seriously, the sprites are a bit weirder at times, but at least you can have skarmory and lugia with aeroblast. Though I also played gold first, I only bought silver last year.

I particularly liked Wipeout Pulse (PSP), Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations (DS), SNK vs Capcom: Cardfighters Clash (NGPC), Pokemon Blue (GB) and Advance Wars 2 (GBA). They were all great.
