With best of three, I mean, you pick one map, and your opponent picks one map, and the third and last is the decider map, which may or may not be fixed.
Same rules, just simplified.

mmm I'm ok for a same, fixed decider map for all rounds yes. But best of 3 is really short I mean, best of 5 should let you more possibilities to make a come back if you fkd up the first races. Jasmin, I think organising a national teams world cup is even more unrealistic than what I'm trying to organise. I mean it's already mayhem to organise something at an individual level, so mobilize group of people under the national flag, now, after 2 years of HD, seems impossible... Friendly meetings are still occuring, like France-Japan a few days ago, but jeez organising a world cup now :blarg...

Yes, I know. That was really the only agrument I could come up with myself for not doing it. I just thought that the simplicity of it would make it more acessible to more players. Maybe we would get fuller and better match reports. And getting the mathces played would be easier, as it doesn't take much time at all, and is easy to squeese in between lunch and teabreak. You get the point.
Although, 5 maps is probably just as good. I'm for it.
I think the winner of the "WipEout HD Photo competition" should have his picture as the background of the cup table. Or even as the main picture for the event. :D
kanar
20th September 2010, 05:45 PM
eh eh yes, nice idea regarding the pic! So we're staying with a best of 5 then, as it's already a quickly played & fair format.
To be honest guys, I really hope all the old WZ guard will stand up for this one. The format is, like we said, particularly flexible, so except timezone differences, there's not so much obstacles, if you're a wipeout fan, to play a bunch of races online with someone at a particular moment of your life.

20th September 2010, 08:46 PM
:eek well thank you guys for answering to my call so quickly! Triboy that's exactly what I'm talking about, I mean slowly but surely spread the info through the internet, and local communities. I'm French and I know how much it can be difficult to understand something here, but hey, why not moving some mountains in the next few months uh?8)
First basic step is to gather the maximum of people here, old guard, new aces, and most important the people who are just playing wipeout HD casually but frequenting these boards; guys our motto will always be the same, right from the start; "The most important thing is not to win but to take part!"
Would be more than awesome to motivate some wipeout ghosts too, like Wellington, Pirah, Kingheim, evolite, well you see the missing pilot thread lol.
In the meantime, I'm trying to set up a group of "community managers", simply based on the organisation at the avalon cup; I mean Darkdrium777 helping me with his nice board, and lots of people like Saturn or others giving a hand from time to time, answering in the thread instead of me or dealing wth a few issues and so on, you get the picture I think.
Oh for sure, I have an idea of what could be needed for this project :
-pictures, like ONlock said (ONlock will try to help me during his spare time), boards...
-teasers about the wipeoutZone cup
-Communications through the internet gaming boards (even officials sony boards) all over the world
Arh enough with this crazy **** for now. Oh just wanted to finish quoting Rob :D...
"We are fast. We are unique. We are nine." (this for the old legendary guard ;))

I'm in! :D
I also have a suggestion, Kanar. I dunno how long it would take for everyone, it may not be unanimous, but i'll share my idea anyway.
To prevent the "death sentence" situation lots of us faced during the Avalon Cup (me included xD), why not do a 2 out 3 for every 1 on 1 showdown? A single Avalon Cup showdown was kinda quick anyway, so 3 of them shouldn't take much more than 1 hour. If we base ourselves on the average time a Single Race takes - 2 minutes x 6 races (3 for each pilots), we have 12 minutes total. Add the 2 extra minutes for the final race, we get 14, rounded up to 15 minutes. So within 45 minutes approx., we're done. How about that?
Now i know the a WipEoutZone Cup may be much bigger than the Avalon Cup (even more with WipEoutArena people). I know it will take much more time than doing a single round and that most probably some people won't be playing Single Race Mode only. But at least it would give much more chances to make our mark, even more if unfair lag is involved. Think about it and let me know! :)
kanar
20th September 2010, 11:28 PM
mmm. That needs reflexion here Kyonshi for sure, as we're already on our way to reduce the round duration to a best of 5 instead of the previous best of 7, for even more efficiency.
2 out 3 mm. Yeah we could imagine a first best of 5, hosted by opponent 1. (away), then best of 5, same tracks, hosted by opponent 2 (Home). But in case of draw, I think we could just replay the same consolidation track previously played (during round 5).
About the consolidation track, I think a good choice could be anulpha pass rapier weapons on, for the entire duration of the cup, as it's the most played track as far as I know. The major issue regarding this format could be, to my opinion;
-zone battle : these rounds are longer than single races.
-rules are becoming a bit more harder to understand, although we should be able to sort this out with basics explanations lol.

I'm not sure there's any way that we can really account for lag. It could be the closest match ever, but the losing player would always be able to point out at least one point where they were affected by lag and therefore could feel hard done by. I think that's human nature really, and don't see a way around it unless we play in the same room as each other.
I can appreciate the point about it being a very short competition for anyone with a tough draw and an early exit. I feel that's the nature of a straight knockout though. Maybe qualifying group phases are worth considering. Or maybe there is some original way in which the first round can be extended, e.g. do a best of 3 or best of 5 but do it against 2 or 3 other players. But the longer and more complex it becomes, the harder it will be to organise, especially if non-regulars are to be getting involved.
Whatever happens, just make sure the Japanese get involved this time.:nod

21st September 2010, 01:07 AM
@Saturn
I was really talking about an ultra-tight photo finish, but more specifically about the random collisions with a solid ghost, which can cost the race in most occasions. I should have made this clearer.
I'm aware we can't do nothing about these issues. But having more race opportunities with a 2 best of 3 would give a chance to get back in the competition somehow.:)

Sat I'm really fond of this round robin idea, but I'm finding it impossible to set up if we have lot of non WZ pilots. Communication will be the sinews of war for sure, so we'll have to stay on strict and uber simple rules. So I'm thinking about 2 choices regarding the rules.
First pick : strict best of 7, exactly like the avalon cup, with anulpha pass default rapier race as Round 7. 3 tracks Home hosting, then 3 tracks away hosting, round 7 hosted by away if necessary.
Second pick :
Best of 5, home & away tourneys :
5 tracks home hosting (opponent 1 (home) hosting his 3 choices + 2 choices of opponent 2) THEN
5 tracks away hosting (opponent 2 (away) hosting his 3 choices + 2 choices of opponent 1)
FINAL ROUND OF DEATH in case of draw : default anulpha pass rapier hosted by away opponent.

I am of course in too, but 128 players? Ambitious! If you manage to pull this off, you really should get a race-mode named after you ;)
I would be all for keeping the 7 races from the Avalon Cup. IMO it's enough races to rule out any accidents/coincidences/luck etc. 7 races is also relatively fast to get done, the ~20 minutes it takes is a lot easier to arrange than having to invest 1-2 hours into each meeting (disregarding the triboy/DJT marathon :p ). With 64 matches in the first round, you'll want something that's super easy to set up. As the tournament progresses, then maybe increase the number of races?
Edit: Oh... Saturn wrote pretty much the same, just much better. I'm with Sat :D

lol mic, I just want to see wipeout HD in the spotlights, no more :D
Yeah I'm finding the best of 7 pretty cool regarding the chosen cup format. Motto is really to keep it fast, fair & simple, because this time we should do our best to involve everyone on earth with an AG ship sleeping in his garage. 128 pilots is our goal, because this is for the record.
Wipeout HD deserves a nice blaze of glory.
(I'm actually extracting psn IDs datas from my previous avalon threads, ONlock I'll contact you in a few days on that matter, planning a massive psn cup advertising campaign. (Guys feel free to contact me if you wanna help me to spam XXX psn inboxes lol)

For what it's worth I think the settings should remain the same as the current Avalon Cup (7 races / zone battles). It seems to have worked well and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I assume I'm wasting my time asking for an Eliminator option? ;-)
kanar
21st September 2010, 03:20 PM
you're right Nutcase, I'm working on a psn ids listing to spam first atm, but I'll send some pms to the wo devs registered here, finger crossed they'll check their inboxes. I'm thinking aboout a first wave of psn pms, then pms here, then posts on other websites, official sony's boards included. A pic & shooting teaser wave would be awesome, as we already have lots of thematics like "for the record", "the wipeout cup" "project overlord" :D
Oh, about eliminator:D. Well, maybe we could allow one "eliminator card" for each opponent? We can talk about that too for sure, if people are interested.

Superb, thanks a lot for signing guys!!! subscription rate is already nice, and we don't even started the spamfest yet eh eh.
ONlock I totally agree, a professional look like dedicated website, hd teasers and so on would be something awesome... But sadly I don't have what it takes too. But, a wipeout HD cup organised by WipeoutZone still makes sense 8), so I'm sure we can coordinate everything well here, giving a maximum of infos and useful links. We have already two motherbases, here & wipeoutarena.net; we still have lots of time to develop everything the best way anyway.
The psn Ids database should be ready by the end of the week, so the spamfest should begin shortly :twisted. We'll try to write a simple, global psn message advertising the cup & redirecting here or at WA. In english though, that's why I mentioned before it would be awesome to have a short resume of the cup stuffs in different languages (most wanted translations would be japanese, Italian, Spanish and German). After this global psn advertising, I'll do my best to shoot crappy teasers soon. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME if some of you guys could shoot some wipeout hd teasers advertising this wipeout HD cup/wipeoutZone cup. Youtube is a fantastic way to spread the info too. Arhhh. I should go to work now gah. :blarg . Oh one last thing, R3BU5ER joined us at the "community manager" thing. -Gathering pilots here & at WipeoutArena
-PSN IDs data processing, before a major psn spamming (1st wave of advertisement, in the core of the system)
-Reflexion on a short, simple & attractive psn text message in english to advertise the cup (we should work on those themes like "for the record", "major wipeout event", "wipeoutZone official cup", "Who can compete with WZ?:mr-tlol" and so on...)

I'm a bit confused with the rules. Can you actually choose to play Zone Battle 3 times if you wanted to?
kanar
26th September 2010, 11:57 AM
Yes Jav. I'm a speed lapper myself, and a single race lover most of the time. But, I'm respecting so much zone mode. I'm a complete noob at zone battle, but it's a fantastic one, ProblemSolver & lots of great pilots could testify about that. So that's why I decided to include zone battles (and so yes you can pick 3 ZB), this for rewarding the most complete/all around pilots. Jeez need to involve ProblemSolver on this one lol, by any means necessary :rock.
Even if you're not a zone battle fan, and on the most dramatic "case" lol (means 3 zone battle oppositions), single race will always prevail, as round 7 is default single race rapier.
Are you in Jav btw:P

Ok then. Well I was just asking since I've whored out Zone as well, with the odd world record here and there. Not that it matters, I just think being able to do 3 Zone Battles is unfair. Why? Just because I play Zone the most (or used to) doesn't necessarily mean I'm bad at normal races. Like you, I really like speed laps too :)
Now, say my opponent has not played Zone Battle much at all. Let's agree with the fact I win all 3 Zone Battle races. In that case I have 4 races remaining and I only have to win 1. Don't you think that's a bit odd?
I suggest the following: if someone decides to play 3 Zone Battles, it's the opponent who gets to decide the tracks. That should at least balance it out a little.
I'm not the best pilot on here by any means, and it's not like the odds for me to go through would improve if this were to happen. I just think it would be better :) Please think about it, or if you don't like the suggestion I could come up with something else...

That's right, first to 4 wins, goes to the next round. What's not fair about that?
If you don't want the match to end so quickly, you could mix it up, say, first one of your maps, then one of your opponents.
This is how most competitions are arranged, and if your opponent can't play zone battles very well, he/she will simply be left in the dust.
Personally I don't see the problem with one player being better than the other. :)
I for one, suck at zone battles! Err, maybe I shouldn't have said that. :P

Thanks a lot for joining guys! Jan709, it's totally up to you for your 3 choices (speed class, br or no brs, single race or ZB, number of laps), and same for your opponent (3 choices too). Only round 7 is default single race, anulpha rapier.
Jav. I think you raised an important point there; thanks for that :P.
MMMm. I totally see your point. But then, I can't get out of my head the fact zone battle users are maybe more all around players than me, for example, as I only spent my life in speed lap mode. So yes, there's 2 solutions;
-keeping a 3 ZB possibility, and assuming the fact ZB users will have maybe a slight advantage (because they explored more the game and its possibilities)
-Restricting ZB to 2 rounds per opponent, and give to this cup a single race oriented aspect.
Fact is Fury extension isn't a requirement for the cup anyway, so I think the two choices are both interesting; waiting for your thoughts guys & gals :P
TBH I feel like ONlock on this one; there's a part of me saying "it's fair, ZB is awesome, even if I suck at it", and the other part saying "jeez I havn't spend all this time in speed lap to loose like that" :P. But hey, ProblemSolver told me that long time ago ah ah "you should play more Zone modes ;)
Jav

I don't think we should allow 3 ZBs. The difference between Zone Battle and Single Races is that with Zone Battle, you can't really get lucky. The better player always comes out on top on Zone Battle because of how the mode works. If you're not good enough, hitting zone barriers is inevitable and you're not likely to have many perfect laps, etc. Especially when the target is zone 55, the better player has enough time to make the difference.
Now, single race. Even when you're structurally better than your opponent at this mode, you could still make a small mistake in just 1 race and you would be out (assuming the other player has won ZB 3 times). Luck (or bad luck) plays a much bigger role in single races. Mess up a boost, a sharp turn or even a barrel roll and you could be out. What if, on Ubermall, you fail the shortcut right after the start? You get respawned and you have lost the race. What if you take the sharp Chenghou turn just a little too early and end up hitting the side of the track? Lost the race. What if you fail the overpass BR on Anulpha and don't land on the overpass? Race over. The thing is, you are somewhat forced to take these risks as you HAVE to win all 4 remaining races.
I'm gonna think of the best solution and report back later. :D

Well, kanar and Assayeah are both fantastic pilots I've recently raced against, and couldn't touch them in race mode. But I play Zone a lot more and so when I asked for some Zone Battles against them, I beat them both. I knew both of them had a weakness for ZB but I chose it because - well - I enjoy it.
Somehow I think that though Race is an integral part of the WOHD community, if you get the fury expansion pack it doesn't just mean a few mods to the ships and the Piranha suddenly becoming even worse. Just as TT, SL and Zone were all parts of HD, if we're playing Fury we have to be able to play Eliminator, Detonator and Zone Battle.
If kanar wants to make a two-race ZB option, then he should make it for two races and one ZB from both people. Otherwise, the point of the cup is to have fun and if you find ZB fun, why should you be stopped from playing it? If you haven't bothered to play all the modes of Fury and can't do ZB, I think you've missed a big part of the game, Jav.

IMO it must be possible for each participant to be able of choosing the mode he knows the most. Maybe with some limitations ! for example we can decide by voting that single race is the mandatory mode (with or without weapons, all classes) and that one single race must be part of the 3 event's choice.
And i could be a way to attract some members that don't play a lot classic online modes !
As an example if an adversary challenges you in an eliminator or detonator event, he'll have to manage a tt/sl challenge ;)

Already so many slots filled, and so much time still untill the kickoff :)
About THE ZB discussion: my opinion is that it is a online battle option, so people are Free to choose it, but mainly the event is focussed on single race, so the suggestion of having at least one single race in your 3 course choise sounds pretty fair to me. i vote for that one. The option GREEN is more of Ã* concern for me. I think it has no added value at all, it's more like roulette to me. Of I pick up 3 boost and the other 1, Then it's Already done. I've got big problems with that. I would say Just choose between weps on or off. That's it. Anybody??

Hey guys, no need to fire any weapons there, as challenger misunderstood your post Jav. You guys are both zone battles player, so everything’s good!
Reading your posts guys, maybe we could go on with the obligation to pick at least one race in your 3 choices (so a limitation of 2 zone battles). Let me know guys if you’re ok with that, or if we’re staying with 3 choices without any restrictions.
Ah R3BU5ER, green lol. Well, we had lots of heated discussions on that matter recently, and as far as I know, every pilot who tried this custom setting had lots of fun. As you’re constantly absorbing the weapons, you’re quickly ending with a turbo, so I believe it’s a fair setting. The difference during green races are made with the use of turbo at strategic points IMO. Anyway, feel free to share your thoughts about that too with us here.

R3BU5ER that's cool, and that's nice to share our thoughts on that matter Tbh, I'm pretty sure green races won't be the favourite choice during this cup. Most of the people are even not aware about this custom mode lol. So it's not a big deal IMO. Mate maybe we should play some green races together lol, so you could see by yourself it's a fair way to race too. Just imagine a set of rocket in your ass, or a respawn. So a single boost late in green race sounds pretty fair compared to that eh?
ACTUAL DISCUSSIONS :
-Total free choice or restriction to 2 ZB max for each opponent
-Green or not Green

Green races - I'm not completely against or completely for it, as I don't have enough experience with it. Maybe some practice green races with two players could be done as an experiment. It might be quite different in only a two player race compared to a fuller room. I've only done them in half full rooms ages ago but if I didn't get a boost it did feel like a massive let down sometimes. I felt quite reliant on it as my one way to have a chance. I don't think it's a less fair way to do it, as both competitors are exposed to the same level of chance, but I think in general people would feel it was less fair.
You could take separate polls on these things. But really you'd want a poll of the participants and not just a normal open poll.
As for the zone battle thing - you could just say that both players have to pick at least two different modes. That way no-one could pick three normal weapons on single races either. It might feel a little less like it was against zone battle that way, and guarantees at least a little variation in every match, which is probably a good idea if it's aimed at the best all around player, because they could otherwise get a route through the tournament where they only ever played weps on races, just by chance.
kanar
26th September 2010, 10:32 PM
both players have to pick at least two different modes.
Mmm. I think we can definitely go with that. By modes, you mean single race weapons, single race no weapons, and zone battle, right? If you guys are ok, we'll validate this.
As for green races, let's say it's pending status for now, and still open for further discussions. As we're 2 on the track, IMO I believe turbo item won't be an issue. But as I said, I'm really open to any point of view. Try it & report any issue with it.

Yes guys, that's exactly what I meant. I suppose the question is then only whether endurance is a mode and what it is defined as. At the moment I think number of laps is free choice, but if endurance were to be considered a separate mode then the minimum number of laps would have to be defined, or we would maybe have to say that number of laps doesn't make something a different mode.
EDIT: I suppose it's also worth considering whether a different speed class would count as a different 'mode'. I think maybe it should, because it's difficult to be a specialist of all speed classes and introduces variation as well. If so then perhaps a statement such as, "Each player has the choice of settings for three races. Of these three races, no more than two may have identical settings." Then you could define what the settings would be, e.g. single race, zone battle, weapons on/off, barrel rolls on/off, 5 laps (standard race), 15 - 20 laps (endurance race), speed class etc....Something like that.
R3BU5ER

I think if you have too many choices it's going to complicate things unnecessarily, especially with so many pilots racing.
The format really needs to be set in stone before any further promotion is begun, and only to use the options that are available when selecting tracks on the online board, so for me Green Races should be out only because it is not a standard type of race selection known by everybody.
My suggestion is each player has to pick and host a track for one weapon on [any speed], one weapon off [any speed] and one zone battle track [the organizing committee should decide a fair max number of zones, as this mode is rarely played by most]
Only if neither pilots want to play zone battle, then they each get to replace what would of been zone battle with a 3rd choice of track/class/weapon on or off.
This should give a fair representation of any particular pilots skills, as it gives them the best options to select what they feel comfortable with, as we all know some specialize at specific speed classes, and make themselves equally as worthy as elite phantom pilots, and just as hard to beat.
The 7th track remains the same Rapier/ Weapons on/ Anulpa Forward.
What you want to do if pilot assist is asked for, I say let them use it if they want to, as we old timers know it slows you down, so it's not really going to be an advantage to anybody that needs it.

I think going from allowing 3 ZBs to allowing just 1 is a bit radical. If 2 of 3 races are going to have to be single races, 5 of 7 plays will be single races. The better single racer has a huge chance of winning that.
Here's what I suggest. You basically only have 2 options:
Racer set-up
Single Race - Weapons ON - Track A
Single Race - Weapons OFF - Track B
Zone Battle - Track C
or
Zoner set-up
Single Race - Weapons ON/OFF - Track A
Zone Battle - Track B
Zone Battle - Track C
Let's go through all 3 possible match-ups:
Racer vs. Racer
You will have 5 single races and 2 zone battles. That's fair, I think, since it's a racer vs. racer match-up. The mode they both like most is played 5 out of 7 times, but they do need to show a bit of their Zone skills in the remaining 2. Well balanced, no?
Racer vs. Zoner
In this one you get 3 zone battles and 3 races during regular play. Then if it is undecided, the game goes to a deciding race on Anulpha Pass. Still, Anulpha Pass isn't a particularly hard track (in fact, the easiest) and I'm sure every Zoner knows their way around Anulpha. ;) So if it should end 3-3 it will be a pretty fair deciding race.
Zoner vs. Zoner
Here we have 4 zone battles and 2 races during regular play. Meaning the zoners can play their beloved game mode but they do need to play at least 2, and if it is then still undecided, 3 single races.
Every 'set-up' needs to contain 3 different tracks [A, B, C]. Player 1's choice of tracks is irrelevant to player 2's choices. This means player 2 can also pick [A, B, C] if he wants to. But a combination [A, C, E] or 3 whole new tracks [D, E, F] is of course allowed. The ONLY condition is that every player picks 3 different tracks.
A player is not stuck to the 'pack' for the whole tournament. Rather, the player chooses the set-up he wants for that particular match. This means you can switch between Racer and Zoner during the tournament. Of course, you're not stuck to the tracks you choose either.
Finally, indeed, this means that players who do not have Fury cannot participate. But I think there's no other way. If the non-Fury players were to be allowed into the tourny, there would be match-ups in which solely single races are played, and no ZBs at all. Sorry, but I'm sure we all want a bit of diversity. 7 single races is simply too tedious.
In that case, because of the exclusion of the non-Fury pilots, I think we should aim for 128 players.
Feel free to comment on this proposal...
ONlock

I understand what you are trying to say Jav, but truly, I do not see the point, so let me get this straight:
Old rules:
Racer Vs Racer: 7 single races <---------- (If they really want to)
Zoner Vs Zoner: 6 zone battles and 1 single race <---------- (Again, if they really want to)
Racer Vs Zoner: 4 single races and 3 zone battles
Your rules:
Racer Vs Racer: 5 single races and 2 zone battles <---------- (If these guys want to play 7 single races, why shouldn't they be able to?)
Zoner Vs Zoner: 3 single races and 4 zone battles <---------- (If these guys want to play 6 zone battles and 1 single race, why shouldn't they be able to?)
Racer Vs Zoner: 4 single races and 3 zone battles <---------- (See any similarity with the old rules?)
If I understood your rules correctly, this is what I get.
As I said, I understand what you are trying to do, but it just doesn't work for me. The result of doing it your way would simply be; to force diversity into other peoples games, when they can have more fun by deciding what to play themselves.
Only good thing I see from it, is that the racers would get some much needed zone battle practice. :P
Just my 5 cents.

I see your point about people who don't have the Fury DLC obviously not being able to play in ZB races, but I don't think they should be denied a chance to play in the WC based solely on that reason, mainly because ZB is played by so few who do have Fury anyway.
We could stipulate in the promotion that it is strongly recommended that anybody wishing to enter the WC have the Fury DLC, so that if the opponent they are drawn against requests ZB as their selection, then they are obliged to either get the Fury DLC and compete or forfeit those races.
There's two decisions we could make with this that would make matters clear cut.
1] At least one Zone Battle race is to be selected and raced by each player [no opting out of this] = Fury DLC required for entry.
Problem arises when neither player likes ZB, which I can see happening quite a bit, plus it would deter possible entry into the tournament from people who read that they have to race at least 2 ZB races when it this race mode holds no interest for them, or they don't have or want to get the Fury DLC.
So basically IMHO it's a bad call if you want to attract pilots into the WC by making ZB mandatory or Fury DLC ownership for that matter.
2]Then you have the more relaxed option, if you can race Zone Battle at the request of your drawn opponent then you are obliged to accept the challenge.
Same goes for Fury tracks generally, if you draw somebody who doesn't have the pack but your choice was from it, well tough luck, plenty of other HD tracks to choose from.
Most people will have Fury anyway, so I think it would be very rare for this problem to occur, plus we are not alienating potential contestants from the start by making the tournament more relaxed in structure.

@blackwiggle :
lol i forgot that everybody didn't purchased the fury dlc !
But it gave me an idea :
when you meet an opponent with fury, you should be able to choose zb, eliminator or detonator mode, and if you (or your opponent) only own HD, you should be able to select zone, sl or tt mode (for the proof it's easy to send at your adversary through psn an ingame picture with hud activated for zone or sl mode, for tt or detonator i have no idea yet). about offline modes it can be possible for the opponents to start together and to decide of a time like 15 mn session or something. Well i don't know if it's possible to organize but it can add variety and attract people that like essentially offline modes (wowo's idea :P), and also make some to race some mode they never do and to give more chances at those who're better at some modes than in multiplayer races.
Of course half of the challenge will be classic online races (or tournament) but to make a grand final we must try to use the game at his full potential, no ? :)

As Blackwiggle said, the format really needs to be set in stone quickly. Saaadly we don't have wipeout HD TV to relay our talks here, or detailed/elaborated/stratified rules. So I'm going to stay UBER simple and go with Saturn here :
-Both players have to pick at least two different modes (modes are single race weapons, single race no weapons, zone battle).
BUT
Here are the "hidden rules" :P
If the 2 opponents are reaching a common agreement : They can pick WHATEVER they want. Green races is going to hidden rules too.
Even wanted to add an easter egg to that like "In case of draw before round 7, and if the opponents are both owning the Blur game, they can play their last round on this game" :P... But I think it's too much ah ah.

27th September 2010, 11:30 AM
They shouldn't be able to because I thought we had all agreed on the fact we wanted to reward the all-round pilots? :| In my set-up you need to be able to perform in both game modes. Also, I would like to point out a difference in the Racer vs. Zoner one. It may look the same but it isn't. In "my" rules the Zoner picks 2 ZB tracks and 1 race track. He will most likely pick his best race track and so he has a chance of winning it. The racer will also pick his favourite ZB map so that he also has a chance of winning it. In the old rules however, the ZB would pick 3 ZB tracks and the racer would pick his 3 race tracks, making it harder for the Zoner to win a race (and vica versa) because it may not be his favourite race track. In my rules it's more balanced.
It is balanced, it's fair, it's all-round and most of all, it's simple. YES there is gonna a lot of Racer vs. Racer match-ups but they should at least have to play Zone Battle so that being all-round would be rewarded, right? I thought that much was clear.
But apparently not. I can't say I'm feeling a lot of sympathy from you guys for the Zone Battle mode in general. I ask all of you, do we want to reward all-round players? Because you might as well scrap ZB entirely if the answer to that is no.
Kanar:
By seeing Weapons ON and Weapons OFF as two different modes, you can have a 7-race match-up. If that's really what you want to allow, then okay. Also, 'racers' have the advantage in this scenario: 3 races is possible but 3 zone battles is not.
Sooo... we go from agreeing on the fact we want to reward all-round pilots, to a potential 7-race match-up.
All that within just 24 hours...
Make it:
Both players have to pick at least two different modes, the modes being:
Single Race
Zone Battle

BACK.
Well. In my mind, here are the actual settings :
If you & your opponent are agreeing on your 6 choices, during the 72h information exchange delay
====> you're free to play whatever you want. (play wipeout hd please though)
If you & your opponent are not agreeing on your 6 choices, during the 72h information exchange delay
====>you guys must choose at least 2 different modes. (by modes I mean weapons/no weapons/zone battle)
So here, I'm admitting this cup is going to be a bit single race oriented, as there will be an inevitable limitation to 2 zone battles (in the worst case). But Fury isn't a requirement anyway, so there's some kind of justification here about the max 2 ZB limitation (in the worst case the 2 opponents don't agree on anything)

Communication should not play a part in deciding the rules, because of this:
SO OFTEN (I have experienced this with other games a lot and it's really annoying), you try to communicate with your opponent, but he just won't reply, or he will take ages to. Communication can really delay the whole tournament. That's why I'm not a big fan of big tournys with a lot of players involved you don't know well. It usually goes like this:
Me: Hey, looks like you'll be my next opponent! :) When are you available?
Me: Yo?
(3 days later)
Player B: yo eh sry man I been away, how about tomorrow afternoon man, see you then peace lol
Me: Huh? What time zon-
*Player B has gone offline*
Me: ARGH. What time zone are you in? When can you play? And we haven't even agreed on what modes and tracks? :?
(2 days later)
Player B: yo where were you man, I said yesterday afternoon and you didnt show up pfft. Jeeeez man
Me: What?! I tried to set this race up when you suddenly went offl-
*Player B has gone offline*
Me: I give up.

Just saying... Past experiences have taught me that it usually doesn't work. But hey, it could be different this time... I hope.

27th September 2010, 01:02 PM
totally agree there Jav, as we're currently experiencing these kind of situations at the avalon cup (well at least we had minor issues, & currently working on the Falcopelle case, I promise KGB, tonight). So that's why we'll be UBER STRICTS with the 72h information exchange delay. We MUST have a strong cup community manager crew, in order to report any troubleshootings with this so important rule. 72h in order to set 6 choices, agree on all of them without restrictions, or finally go with the default settings (2 different modes obligation)
I know we'll have to adopt a raptor-style for the cup community managing, smelling any MIA pilots at a long distance lol. But we're already 26 at the command center working on this cup, I should find a good crew of cup community managers.
27 now, as you joined lol.
Jav
27th September 2010, 01:15 PM
Nice to know others have these concerns too. And thanks for letting me in :) Yep, I think being very strict is the way to go then. If a player is not active, it should be reported immediately. There should be 2 or 3 (maybe 4) people who can be messaged to report such things. Community managers, like you said.
Everyone needs to know that communication should be as clear as possible. So when messaging your upcoming opponent, mention the time zone you're in, mention when you're available, mention what your preferred modes and tracks are. We will want communication to play a minimal role before the games so it should all happen very swiftly. 2-3 messages should be enough.
After all there's nothing quite as annoying as an inactive opponent.

Regarding the ZB issue - remember that the idea of the cup is to make it as simple as possible, so I think it's best to go with the "each player must choose at least two modes" option; the modes being:
Weps On
Weps Off
ZB
Green (I'm not sure on this one, but it's up to everyone else.)
If one person does not have the Fury DLC, then they don't have to choose 2 different modes.
Just my $0.02.
JJ - That was a fantastic video, I was really impressed :+ Have a :beer on me
KGB
27th September 2010, 08:32 PM
Personally I think all this is complicating something very simple. A few of the pilots in this comp will be playing on the slower classes and wont stand a chance with the ZB, green or weps off side to it. To make them pick something they don't feel comfortable with is a sure fire way to stop them playing.
The Avalon rules work fine for me. I don't see why it needs to be changed. If I came up against someone who played 3 ZBs and I lost them all and then he won one of my phantom races then fine, I lost because he was the better all round player.
Just my thoughts, but majority rules :+

you'll be free to accept these 3 ZB KGB, if you're up to. And you'll be free to ask for at least one single race if you're against ProblemSolver. Well no, he didn't signed yet lol. I know there's some pilots around who don't like no weapon races, so if someone is coming with 3 no weapon races, his opponent could ask for at least one another mode. Same thing for a weapons allergic.
But as I said, if there's common agreement (during the 72h delay to exchange track infos) on the 6 choices, it's really up to you guys.

I think the point originally, at least partly, was that someone who has spent most of their time on zone and zone battle has enough skill that they could jump into normal races and potentially gain the edge with luck there, whereas the opposite isn't really true, as there is no random element to zone battles. I kind of see the point there really.
In terms of being an all around pilot, this game is not just races or zone battles. What about all the TT/SL fans? That's a big part of the game too. Weapons off races are probably the best way to include something like that as we don't have online TT and green races are a non-official type of race. Weapons off and weapons on races are a very different prospect, IMO, and I think that's clear when we see that certain people can sometimes win a load of weapons on races, but then not have the accuracy and consistency in their racing to win out in the weapons off races.
I also feel that having a racing bias is fine, because that's what the game itself has. More game modes are based around racing than they are around zone, and online races are really the backbone of the online community, whereas ZB is far less popular.
The Avalon Cup hasn't gotten very far yet and so I don't really know how the current rules will play out, but I think anything that encourages a little variation is a good thing, as long as it doesn't force someone to pick something unfamiliar as part of their own three choices.
What you want to do if pilot assist is asked for, I say let them use it if they want to, as we old timers know it slows you down, so it's not really going to be an advantage to anybody that needs it.
I disagree with this. It's not as simple as PA just slowing you down. It's a matter of PA not allowing you too close to walls, thus preventing you taking tighter lines and doing shortcuts etc. But that only matters above a certain skill level when we start looking to really improve. But this competition is open to all, and some competitors in early rounds may even struggle with not hitting walls (I swear I still do sometimes:|). Someone at that level could get ripped off if they were doing their utmost to race at their best, while their opponent, of similar skill, just sat there holding the x-button and got lucky with weapons pads, or just stayed out of the walls on Moa Therma, thus having higher shield when the two start lag ramming each other and survived as a results, or something like that. I admit, it's a theoretical situation which is, perhaps, unlikely to happen, but I just think it should be turned off, and we should all fly ourselves to the finish line.
Jav
28th September 2010, 02:58 AM
I completely agree with Saturn for the first part of the post. I guess Weapons OFF are the closest to TT as it gets online. Basically, you have just convinced me of the fact it is a completely different mode. So I think the following rule is our best bet :)
"You have to pick at least two different modes, the modes being W-ON, W-OFF and ZB."
It keeps things simplest and it's quite all-round, if not a bit single race oriented. But since that is played the most by far, I guess it's a good representation. You can also still have 2 ZBs which is nice for those who want it. :)
----------------------------------------------------
As for PA, I think we'll all agree on the fact that a player who needs PA is never gonna be good enough to win a 7-race match up. They won't be a 'threat', and thus won't threaten the fairness of this competition.
Besides, if we are allowing ANY pilot whatsoever (taking part is what matters), then they should have the possibility to use it. If you don't allow PA, that's like saying you need to have a certain skill level in order to participate. But we have already clearly stated literally any pilot can participate.
PA allowed, imo
kanar
28th September 2010, 09:57 AM
Ah, PA. I believe it won't be a big deal there, I'm not sure a PA pilot can really be annoying when you're only 2 on the track, and tbh if you're using PA that means you're errrr... Well you won't stand a chance in this cup. You could ask the question to your opponent during the 72h exchanging information delay, but seriously I'm doubting to hear any report of a PA user during this cup. So it remains "as is", I mean we don't talk about that, it's kinda tolerated but won't be a big deal anyway.

Whoa. Massive thanks for joining guys, was away for a few hours and everything's changed here lol. DividedXZero! Glad to see you there! I talked about december in order to prepare everything nicely & finish our avalon cup in good conditions. We should start around mid december, for a long journey, as there's a 3 week window each round. We'll prob. shorten this delay in the next rounds. And oh, well sure, you can pass the info on GFAQS, to be honest we didn't launch our webgames promo campaign yet, so feel free to go on. We'll have more promo footage soon too; The command center is working so hardly these days to prepare this cup. So let's make a quick update;
-I'm late in my psn spamfest, and I must finish that as there's sure some pilots who would like to join on this list. Should be done by the end of the week.
-JJPAP released an incredible revelation teaser (link first post)
-Connavar proposed us webpaging solutions, we should coordinate ourselves soon around this common project.
-Promo pics & new animation logos are on their way
-We should launch our second advertisement wave (gaming websites/twitter/Facebook in the next few weeks...
-new teasers should be available soon
And I'm asking myself. Why not 256 now? We just started this cup discussion a week ago. Obviously there's a relative interest for this cup. So let's try to double that. If we can't reach it, we'll organize a preliminary -offline- turn, probably a TT &/or a Zone, and we'll downscale the cup.
Jeeeez. I spent ages using this awful ps3 video editor in order to "participate" in the teaser department. Truly epic, as I'm a noob for video editing. So I've edited some wo hd/fury teasers (classic), and added some weirdoe shootings taken at the wipeout museum (I know.). Heya Supernova! Thanks for joining!
Hey Nut, :D mammoth online spam is still processing, thanks to R3BU5ER (hadn't finished T to Z yet). And our wipeout lobby group :P still have a lot of MIA pilots to persuade eh eh. So target is definitely 256 now.
And if target is unreachable (it is reachable :nod), we'll start with an offline preliminary round, composed of 1 SL, 1 TT & 1 Zone (settings TBC, if needed)

thanks for joining guys! JF, I had the chance to play F1 2010 at my brother-in-law's place, and check this out : ALL settings high, including anti-aliasing (:mr-t PC lol, almost rock solid 50/55/60 fps) + Wheel + dts surround + Monza under the rain = WHOAH. Awesome. so tbh, I don't even want to check how the game's running on our Ps3 now. i mean must be nice yeah, but after what I've seen, urgh.
Guys I received a text from the Legendary Mad-Ice, saying "thanks for the heads-up, I will be there" :P. I think is IN too :rock

Lol. Jan709, rules are now settled;
("Hidden rule" : if you & your opponent are reaching a common agreement, you're totally free to choose whatever you want regarding your choices)
IF THERE'S NO COMMON AGREEMENT : Both players have to pick at least two different modes (modes are single race weapons, single race no weapons, zone battle).

Ladies & Gentlemen, may I present you Mr Panda Man :P
He's our new mascot, and -maybe- the future Larry King of Wipeout. After his incredible acting performance in this Wipeout HD cup teaser that can be found HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g11kL6iQDI), we contacted him, and we're working on new teasers projects, and a possible talk-show live at the wipeout museum (read command center:D), with of course lots of guests invited for special interviews. This is just a project for now, sorry JJPAP btw, couldn't restrain myself, your idea was too funny to keep it just for myself. So guys Panda Man is just our official mascot for now, we're still negociating his contract for a deeper collaboration lol.

2nd October 2010, 11:13 PM
Ace introduced me to a real ZB king a few weeks ago - P_Denton, and I along with Elf, Phantom and Luri all had a few races against him just a few hours ago. We're trying to convince him to join the cup, but with the 72-hr constraint it won't work, because he can only play on the weekends. :/ Shame, he's a great guy and would make a great opponent.
kanar
3rd October 2010, 01:04 AM
challenger , this 72h constraint just mean you'll have to decide yourself quickly _means a 72h reflection_ regarding your track choice, in order to allow to your opponent and yourself some time for practice. So OF COURSE you can arrange your meetings during the week-end, if your opponent is ok to play a week-end. So I repeat, 72h is just a first contact & a track exchange obligation. Challenger, bring us this zone ace!

:) Welcome to the cup guys! I saw there's rumors starting to spread over the internet, about our little project eh eh, which is nice. Here's a little update about the situation atm;
First & foremost, the main issue we're experiencing at the command center is the lack of time. We're all fkin busy in our real life, so we can't allow much time to this story. But, 140 reservations already, featuring the best pilots in the world, funky teasers, dope promo pics, tons of ideas, well this is already something!
The teaser department is working on a new -lethal- trailer wave, and believe me, from what I've already seen, it will be pure dope.
I'm still scouting the www, in search of lost Jedi pilots; and I'll continue with the psn spam a little bit more (M to Z, WZ pilots psn database here).
I've no update from Connavar yet regarding the event part construction on his website, fingers crossed he'll come back with badass news regarding this stuff soon.
We're preparing the playstation boards region-localized announcement. It will be the last part of our advertising promotion, with some announcements on other websites like neogaf, IGN... We're waiting a bit for this final step, as we would like to go with rock solid content like hd teasers, dedicated website/event part. But as I said earlier, the rumor is spreading, we just need to magnify it ;); "All the legendary pilots, finally reunited? Yes it's for real!"

true Jav. And we're still in the -deep- shadow lol. No official announcement, not even an announcement there too, the topic even struggling for his life with the bling brigade one. Obviously I couldn't post something scheduled for December in the already overcrowded arena section, as there's already lots of good topics and a fantastic upcoming Puerto Rico man Vs Uk ghost pilots. So yeah, I'm really happy to have a lot of friends helping me, and amazed to see already more than half of the slots reserved. And most of the legenday pilots with us. So yes, we're on our way to organise the biggest wipeout event ever. All in the name of unity.

Welcome there Olol! Well tbh, I'm loving this word of mouth aspect for now. We concentrated ourselves on the wipeout-profiled psn IDs first, from the legendary pilots to the young guns, and I still have around 150/300 inboxes to spam. And we're still waiting for Connavar reports regarding a possible dedicated wipeout hd cup section on his website. Of course we should be able to pilot everything from here; but a dedicated space would improve the cup feedbacks, one click for reports, vids, results... So this is one of the reasons why we didn't move to the next target here yet : http://uk.playstation.com/country-selector/ :D

It's probably the last time. The last opportunity we have to be finally all reunited into one big event... All in the name of our common racing memories. We spent real -unforgivable?- good times online all together these past 2 years, so let's just celebrate one last time, and make this Grand Finale wipeout HD deserves.

next step is 512 8). I'm kidding of course. Woah was a little disoriented today with my job, the wife, the avalon cup results, the new subscribtions here and Michael Jordan. Yeah this is kinda astonishing already. Proof we're definitely a special community. And well, the best game ever deserves the best thing ever. 256, that's a huge number eh eh, but the cup format is relatively easy to manage. We're actually recruiting the cup community managers, who will be in charge of a group of pilots. Means we'll be 7 or 8 managers for round 1, giving you the latest news by psn pm. You'll have to report your status to them. triboy it would be awesome if you could join us in this team, as you could help your Polish friends as I'm helping some of my fellow frenchies with the english language. Communication will be the key, we don't need that much infos because it's still a racing game and not an RPG, but we'll need to share the basics. Anyway I'm sure everything will be ok, we had a few MIA pilots on the avalon cup, but the competition is definitely a blast anyway. So I'm rather confidant for this one eh eh.
Oh btw we'll open a dedicated chatbox for the cup on the ps3, so that you guys could share some infos sometimes all together. We'll send you the invite after the registration step.

Done mate. I've tried to put the PSN ids only, hope they're all corrects. By the way, don't forget to check if your name is on the frontpage, as subscribtions came from everywhere, maybe I forgot a few pilots so far. I'm adding a new group regarding the subscribtions btw, in order to save us some time with the massive registration confirmation PM. So if you're already READY to go for this December (I mean you understood the rules, you're visiting WZ often, and you're sure to find time for this cup in the next few months), then I'll put you in the Confirmed Slots.
