I assumed there was a thread for just for the Hauppauge HD PVR unit, but there isnt, for people who dont know what a Hauppauge HD PVR here is a link;

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

Best and really the only way to record content from the PS3 console professionally.

Just got a few questions out there;

Who has one of these units at the moment to use it to record content via the PS3?

Whats the average price for one of these units?

How does the setup to the PS3 to the PC/TV work out?

How much data size does each WOHD race take up when recording on 720p?

Cheers:)

The problem with devices like this is that you never get a direct video signal on your display... you always have to pump it -through- either this device, or some other recording device. As a result, you'll probably suffer lag.

I think someone else here (albino ace maybe? dont recall), does it by running his PS3 through a regular cable-provided DVR (to capture HD video)... You'd have to ask whoever it is if they deal with much lag as a result

I know Chris and TF and a few other use this device. Is there a pictogram somewhere where i can see the basic setup display for this device with the PS3 and everything??? Im still trying the grasp the concept of this unit working with a PS3, TV and computer all at the same time.

@AG Wolf;Kigo's 3rd question

You could just use a component distribution amp. Put the ps3 into the 'in', buy a few more sets of component cables and send one to your tv and the other to the capture device. I got one at radioshack for cheap. Keeps the quality unlike getting a bunch of splitters and lets you play lag free on your tv =D.

Unfortunately I can't afford an HD PVR lol.

..you'll probably suffer lag.

I always wondered if there was any - but I can't say there's anything noticeable to my eyes. I used it for almost my best TTs and for a lot of online competition too, so performance wise I don't think it had an impact in that sense. I think it has a component bypass for the TV signal. PC signal goes via USB and has a very noticeable lag on it.

There's a thread for capturing video game footage somewhere that Lance started. It should answer some HD PVR questions.

Any diagrams or something of this kinda setup????

I cant really visualize this without seeing it for myself with my own eyes.

This is the exact model I have, except I got it for half that price. On the left side is the input. You will plug your PS3 in there. On the right are 4 outputs. With two additional sets of component cables+audio, you will connect one output to you tv and the other to the HD PVR. Here is a little diagram with my awesome paint skillz =).

EDIT: Forgot to mention this one here supports up to 1080i, you could do one better if you wanted but at the price I got mine at I couldnt pass it up!

Cheers thanks for that, got kinda an idea how this all works now.

Now ive got a question, forgive me if it sounds a bit stupid but its on my mine. A PS3-Component cable coming from the multi-AV port on the PS3 gives the same 1080p gaming resolution as a HDMI cable setup to a HD TV, right, correct?

Ive never used a PS3-component before so i wouldnt know.

You will be able to do 1080p still as long as your tv supports it, but you wont have access to things like super white, other things that have ...(HDMI) beside them.

Hmm ok. Never knew that. All this time wasnt sure about that. Now i know.

Yes my tv is capable of 1080p :)

Cheers for all the help on this thread IDReaper.

Didnt have much luck finding that component distribution amp in Australia's equivalent radioshack stores. Tempting to see what i could do with the old car sound system stuff, alot of rca cables and a amp i dont use anymore :p Probably an unwise move there, ill leave them in there box.

Going to ask around a few more places for the Hauppauge HD PVR unit. Most stocktake computer places dont have a clue what im going on about. But there is a few more across this city i havent checked out yet.

Owners of the Hauppauge HD PVR unit. Do you get some sort of software editing program CD including in the package as well?

I didn't get any useful software with mine other than a conversion tool. There was more but it's nothing great - no editing software.

Oh wait, so you can still play in 1080p if using one of these :D

Or did I read that wrong? :paperbag

If I can still play in 1080p then I'm SO getting one :g

You will play 1080i [and PVR tool will encode to AVCHD 1080p (m2ts)].
Then I use Adobe CS5 to encode .mp4 files.
I make a .jpg [fast] and it's in french but i think you will understand. http://i64.servimg.com/u/f64/14/74/56/99/sans_t13.jpg
And the ps3 cable for YUV (video and 2.0 sound recorder) http://i2.cdiscount.com/pdt/0/7/8/1/d/3700441000078.jpg

So ==> I play 1080i with my home theater 5.1 sound (hdmi sound) and i record 1080i/2.0 sound.
Understand ? lol o.O
