So, it's happened, Sega are actually making a Sonic game the way they should be made:

set after sonic & knuckles, it's supposed to be like those good old megadrive/genesis games. i'm really hopeful....loved 1, 2, 3 , S&K.

thoughts?

Probably too soon to tell, but the 1 second of gameplay looked like it should, and it could turn out to be amazing! :D
Gah, now I'll have to buy some current-gen console... :(
XD

If there's any series I love more than Wipeout, it's Sonic. Admittedly, every Sonic game post-Saturn era has been terrible, but I still call myself a Sonic fan to this day.

Words cannot describe how much I have wanted to see that blue and gold "4" from the day the Genesis died. I literally FLIPPED THE F*CK OUT when I watched that video, even though it was nothing.

They better not screw this up... after Sonic 3D Blast and Knuckles' Chaotix, every subsequent Sonic game has been this:

Even the Gameboy Advance and DS games were bad... they never seemed to grasp the way the momentum and jumping mechanics worked from the Genesis games...

Hahaha! That pic! XD
I agree with all that. This looks quite promising though. I just hope it has the right feel to it, like the old games did.

heh heh, that pic reminds me of the infamous sonic cycle (let's hope they break it this time):

huh?
What about the sega Zone? wtf? do they just love wasting their money?? I guess zone was a nothing console.

I don't think the Zone 40/Sega Zone/whatever was supposed to be a competitor to the current-gen consoles - Sega just allowed Zone 40 (or maybe it's just Zone) to do a console with Mega Drive/Genesis games on it. If I'm not mistaken, Zone 40 have made other versions with some cheap games built into it, just as a budget thing with some Wii-style features.
Seems the time would be right for Sega to give proper consoles another go though, now that almost everybody hates Microsoft and Sony. It could be just like when I was a kid again - Sega vs Nintendo! :D

Yeah, life long Sonic fan here eagerly awaiting more info on this, could be what we all want. Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 3 was my personal favorite of all time, hyper Sonic! I doubt it'll be topped.

I'd wet my pants if they filled these episodes with 16 bit style music :D Memories flooding back.

It would be cool to see Sega back in the console market.

Sonic 1 was the the drug that hooked me to games. As long as it is really 2D and there is no voice acting we`re on course. I`m slightly worried about the "homing attack" that is reported to be included. That should be no more complex than a spin attack. Simplicity, Sega: less is more! I hope this doesn`t screw it up. As long as they have an understanding of what made so many people love the old 16bit games it should be alright. And it also needs a trippy special stage.

And RR I agree about the 16-bit music, that would be :nod

agreed on all counts, lunar. also agree with RR about sonic 3 w/ knuckles being the best thing ever. I've beaten that more times than I...probably ever should, but damn if it ain't amazing! my hopes are raised, but expectations are staying low.

I want this to be good... Sonic needs it... I need it... but 2D won't save it, it's still gonna need decent levels- something I would not trust Sonic Team to be capable of.

Probably gonna be Megadrive/Genesis Sonic > This > Every other Sonic game.

Hehe, seems everybody's forgotten/overlooked the great Master System Sonic games (well, the first couple were great, at least), which were much more than just 8-bit ports of the Mega Drive versions - they had their own levels which were all well-designed, and they still had the right classic Sonic feel (I don't really rate the Game Gear versions btw, which were basically the same, but felt all wrong due to everything being zoomed-in to compensate for the tiny screen). I doubt many would like them more than the 16-bit games, but they're much better than what was released later IMO, and definitely worth playing. :)

I only had a Master System II, either because we couldn't afford a Mega Drive or my parents just straight up didn't know the difference (never did figure out which), and the Master System version of Sonic 1 is what I'm familiar with. Always really really wanted the Mega Drive version though, as it just looked way prettier. Still, the satisfaction of completing it was immense, and looking back over some old videos reminds me that it was definitely still a great game. If this new version captures the same feeling as I remember then I'm sure to buy it. I never got rid of that MSII - I should have a play for old times sake.

I still have mine too, along with around 40 games! :D
Haven't played it in years (I use emulators these days), but it's still functional.
I've never been seduced by graphics over gameplay, and the Master System had a few games I really wanted, so I actually chose that over the Mega Drive. :lol
I should get it out again - I can't use my awesome Quickshot Professional (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4b/QuickShot_QS-129F.JPG) controller on the emulators.

funny hearing you guys over in europe getting nostalgic for the mastere system :P I never even knew what the master system was until like 95 or 96 or something lol I had been playing Genesis since the day it came out (a friend of mine got one when it launched), but the SMS was genuinely so unpopular over here that nobody I knew had one when I was younger and I only learned about it one day when a local video store was selling some old games.

Even when I was playing the Game Gear Sonic games, I didn't know 1, 2, chaos, and spinball were just ported straight from the SMS... I kinda wish Triple Trouble had a master system counterpart, a bigger screen would have helped that game a LOT. Too bad you guys are stuck with the SMS at 50hz, the 8bit games play a lot better at NTSC speed :/

They could do better though... Someone remixed the song with the prototype/JP/EUR Sonic CD title screen music:
http://tweaker.sonicretro.org/music/Sonic4CDTitle.mp3
For comparison:
JP/EUR title music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-I8XpxWuUP4)
prototype title music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZzxE08h7Os)
USA title music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKCNLSCsREg)

Moar trivia: the JP/EUR Sonic CD main theme is also the same as the music from "Green Hills Zone" on the SMS/GG Sonic 2
