As many of you know, there has been a lot of talk recently about a certain speed glitch which has been exposed. I would like to think that everybody who participates in this challenge does so as a way of improving their skills and will not resort to such measures.


2) The Speed Lap Challenge is based on a principle of trust, so please post an honest time. At the end of the day, this challenge is a way of improving your personal racing skills, so you'd only be harming yourself by lying - anybody who lies about their time and is found out will be banned from participating in any future Speed Lap Challenges. A genuine mistake is fine, but don't blatently lie about your time by whole seconds or resort to glitches.

Don't try to cut the corner or anything like that. Don't even try to get near the apex. Boost low and slightly to the right, then a/b back in to the corner once you're at/past the apex and you should be able to get the 2nd BR without too much bounce.

Don't nose up at the very start, just boost over the line normally. After that, use your new boost on/near the first speedpad with a little nose up. If all goes well you'll be flying :g

BR yourself senseless before the line to maximise your speed, BoostBR over the line, corners, pads, blah blah, boostBRBR up the hill, linespadsblahblah, BR at the end. There's more than one BR at the end (See texasalex's insane TT run) so there's still time to gain. I also tried the other technique which is 9BRs or so but I couldn't get it all in one lap so I'm not sure how viable it is in terms of speed...

It's ridiculously hard to learn that shortcut properly in internal view...ridiculously I tell you! But at least I've learned there's an extra speed pad if you go left. Always a benefit to trying the speed lap challenge :) even if your times are crap.

internal view is nice and fun to play but i cant do as many br's using it either.you basically cant steer properly whilst you in mid barrel roll using cockpit view cos you cant see properly cos your upside down.
straight line barrel rolling is fine and thats it.

When i first started doing this, back in the summer,there was competition for all places, not only for the 1st.
Lately it became a challenge for the WR... lol
I might give this chal a go though later since i kinda like amphiseum.

Mm I think everyone should join in. It takes what, 10-15 minutes to get a time that you can at least be semi-happy with. That's not a very long time considering you have a week to do it. Little competitions between players, increasing your feel for the game with crazy ship choices in classes that you might not be used to. I think it very much broadens one's perpective of the game....and it's fun ^_^

you say wher are all the slow pilots..well they are here all 30 or so of them they just do it and dont post cos they are scared the ten players who do post their times will laugh when they actually wont..

all you gotta do is check out the records and see wierd ships featuring in the speed lap choice for that week.

last night i saw quite a few mirage records had appeared but they did not post..

you gotta remember you may be the slowest who posted at present but your still one of the top 100 fast players...well assuming you got top 100 which i would of thought your time would have got you..

thats so right dp89..ive learnt loads of new moves doing speed lap challenge.quite a bit of it i actually use now in regular races..with ease and sometimes i have won a race simply down to pulling off a speed lap challenge move...:nod

before speed lap challenge i would have said use that move and your going to crash..

also due to speed lap challenge i can use every ship now..no ship is a bad ship to me its simply down to what colour do i fancy using to night..:)

You have to boost at the last possible moment before finish line (like you'd be trying to boostBR on venom) and immediately start to turn mid-air to fit into the first turn.

I was just thinking about this SL challenge and was wondering what you guys would think about the idea of introducing a definite normal/fury criteria along with the weekly criteria. It seems no one doesn't use the fury ships so might be a good way to occasionally enjoy some of the the older models? My 2p...

We could do that MENGKESHI but I don't know if people would be willing to do so. There are already a lot of constraints as to what can be used in the SL Challenge each week and I'm not sure if it would go down too well if further restrictions were applied.

As much as it hurts me to say this, I think it's clear that the SL Challenge is losing steam now and it is nowhere near as popular as what it used to be. Therefore, I am considering closing it down after this week. It had a good run, and I never expected it to last for 80 (!) weeks, but I suppose that everything must come to an end at some point.

TBH I saw this coming. It did have a good run; and though I haven't really participated in a while, this challenge helped encourage me to become a better player when it first started and when I was there every week.

I'll make sure I give it a go this week for old time's sake. I haven't actually played WOHD since my last HD Cup match, weeks ago...

I got 22.31 with the Fury Mirage, 9 Speed Pads and 3 Barrel Rolls. Closest I've ever been to Leungbok, I think.

Also, discovered an amusing, if useless glitch on TDR Rev. If you bounce off the last right-hand wedge barrier before the uphill tunnel, and boost, you'll fly over the rock face and land on the track again. Kind of pointless, but I thought it was fairly amusing the first time.

It's just not the Speed Lap Challenge DP. The whole game is dying down, but let's be reasonable; we've enjoyed the game together for nearly 2.5 years now, and that's more than you can ask from any community. You've done a superb job with this challenge, I'm sure it has made a lot of pilots better (including me, without a doubt), and I'm happy it was YOU who set this up and kept it going. Kudos to you man really :)

It's not necessarily a bad thing... things come and go, and we've kept this going for 80 weeks! That's a fantastic amount... in my opinion. Don't feel sad, be proud :)

Luxo MIA for not responding to any messages during 3 weeks... I think that says enough. After the World Cup this game will most likely die down. But all good things come to an end you know, don't feel bad about it.

Well done DP for running it for so long, I haven't participated for a while but it certainly helped me an awful lot to understand lines and the like a lot more. I even won one once :D ( just me entered that week ;)). As I said in my drunken state the other week 2 and a half years is pretty good going for an online game. I think your Speed lap challenge was one of the few things that kept me going a bit longer. Lets hope we get to do it again on some new tracks someday.

Oh man, that's some shitty news. :(

Well I just want to add my gratitude to everyone else's. Not only has this thread helped me to become a much better player but it has also been the main source of my continued interest in the game. Work/home commitments mean it is rare that I can compete online without distractions, so the SL challenge has allowed me to get in the ring with some extremely great players, both in terms of skill and sportsmanship. I'll be REALLY sad to see this go but...

And so here we are - the end of the SL Challenge. It's been a fantastic 80 weeks and I would like to thank each and every one of you who participated, especially the regulars. I hope that this challenge helped you to experience new styles of racing as well as improve your skills. Maybe even a PB or two? I never thought we would get this far and it has been an absolute pleasure running this challenge. Once again, a massive thank you to everybody - it wouldn't have lasted without you guys. I hope that we can all keep a bit of WipEout HD in our hearts, even if some of us are starting to, or have, moved on.
