Anybody heard of this?

Borderlands is an upcoming science fiction first-person shooter with RPG elements that is currently in development by Gearbox Software (responsible for porting Half - Life to PS2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines) for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and is due for release in October 2009. The game was revealed in the September 2007 issue of Game Informer magazine. The game is the first in a planned franchise.


There are four playable characters, which can be levelled up in typical RPG fashion, meaning that four people can play this, online, offline or both. What really shines is the random weapon generation when a new game is started.

Recently, in a preview of Borderlands, MTV Multiplayer claimed to have seen the debug menu for the game. Accourding to them the Debug menu said that the total number of weapons in the game is 3,166,880. It is thought that there are more guns in the game then all the guns in all the games on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 combined.

Gearbox director Matthew Armstrong says. "We saw a ridiculous amount of guns, but perhaps the strangest was a revolver that fired shotgun shells. Gearbox is constantly surprised with what the system comes up with. They've seen rifles shoot everything from homing darts to rockets. "One of the guns tracks onto something and locks, and after three seconds, [the target] suddenly explodes".

It's using the Unreal 3 engine, so it might not be like Half - Life.

And I like the fact theyve made an AI that invents guns for the game meaning anything can crop up. Its definitely got potential and im keeping my eye on it!

I'm a sucker for co-op games so this is looking very interesting for me but I'd probably get it on PC.
They used to have a more realistic graphics style but I think it began to look a bit too much like fallout 3, so they decided to stylize it - all the better for it I reckon.

Looking forward to this! Looks to be a "sandbox" game like elder scrolls and MMOs, which is just my sort of thing. IGN has release listed as october, so it's not far away, I just hope there will be a demo available.

I usually never trust previews, because in 99% of cases everyone goes "OMG best thing we've ever seen, sooooo unique and awesome" in previews - then when the game is released they give it a 7 for being "nothing special, seen it done better" ("FUEL" anyone?).

I am really wanting this game to come out. The coop action looks awesome. I still don't know if I'll be able to get it (Start of first uni year so let's see how much time I have for games first huh?) but if I can I sure will. I've been wanting a good, fun game for some time now. It's become quite rare these days.

Well this game has 87 bazillion guns! :g

Well there is a slight competitive aspect, but come on that's over-generalizing a little. UT (2004 and 3) which I play is basically only competitive and yet I find it fun :) What I meant by fun was a game where you could have a laugh when you play with friends, either online or split-screen/LAN.
Though my comment is probably heavily biased as I don't have the funds (nor the time) to try out every game that comes out. So I've probably missed out on a lot of fun experiences. I probably won't be buying anything before Borderlands and Uncharted 2...
The most recent game I had fun with was Darwinia (From the Steam indie sale, and not counting Audiosurf since I knew about it before... somehow ;))

dunno what to say, just such an awesome looking game, coming out around the same time I'll be picking up a PS3, love the art direction, the creatures look great, character classes look interesting, the multiplayer rpg element is one of the big selling points for me

I'm trying not to watch to many gameplay vids or read to much about what will happen in the game as I want it to be a really fresh experience. I'll probably be using Brick most of the time.

have you guys read much about the weapon creation AI in Borderlands?, I was thinking it would be awesome to have a wipEout craft creator of a similar nature, or maybe a track creator, it'll never happen but it would be cool(though it'd probably work better for PSP game's)

anyone got any PS3 controller recommendations that are suited to FPS as I'll be buying another so I can play split screen co-op with my mates
(and yeh that question is a little off topic but starting a new thread about a controller for a game as unpopular as borderlands is probably a waste of space)

I'll most likely be using Mordecai, on PC though (Unless my system absolutely can't run it, which would be sad as it runs UT3 mighty well and it's the same engine.)

I read good things about the FragFX controller for FPS on PS3... Might want to look into that.

the Frag FX2 gets allot of good reviews but it looks really hagus, it seems like they design everything in house, Splitfish need to get over their company pride issues and hire a real design firm.

Yes, that was admittedly his silly idea and he was kind of swamped when Kotaku posted it as news. It was only yesterday though. ;) Still he seems to be wanting to go through with it and made a list of everyone's gamertag... Expect to see the achievement for playing with a Gearbox employee or with someone who already has that achievement to spread exponentially faster. ;)

It is, but theres A LOT of red tape. Kinda kills the competition if you think about it. Which is why if I do it, the game wont be for retail, just something I distribute to friends and such...then possibly hostilly take over MS to distribute LoL

The PS3 version has some very big troubles playing online that the developers are currently aware of. They are going to fix this. ;)

It was the top seller, so it's gonna take a while to download if you even manage to get in a slot. Currently 1% at around 200kbps... From France I think... :s

There's even more besides - since going on co-op with Zer0 last night, I've got a Sniper that shocks people, a 69 round SMG that looks like a P90, and I'm up to level 16, and a tonne more weapons since then. Even the caches have reset themselves:D. It went way too hard, though. :cold

I refuse to enable 2K's move to shaft the PC gamers with a delayed release. Sorry, but I believe that's the only reason why it was pushed back on PC: to have people jump ship and buy the console versions. Proof of that is that the PC DVDs shipped at the same time as the Xbox 360 DVDs and the PS3 blu-Ray discs.
If anything I'll probably rent it so 2K gets none of my money.

It's a bit strange how you can get it but not play it. If I were you, I'd rent it on PS3 for the time being. Get some co-op in. :)

It's good in a sense that it decreases the load on the content server hosting the game come release day though it is annoying too that the game is basically ready to be played.

The only other thing I can think of is that they are tooling up the PC servers to not overload them on launch.

Remember BioShock? 360 scoops it up, PS3 gets it a million years later. People were pi**ed. Same with Fallout DLC. I feel your pain DD. My true suggestion-- get a FragFX keyboard and mouse and stick with the PS3 (thats the biggest reason I see people not sticking to console-only gaming-- theyre just too used to keyboard and mouse).

As for Borderlands, I have to wait to get it. Bummer. No work, but at least I can focus on a certain "Table-Top" game now:+

sorry mday, after playing for 16 hours straight online I had to get the game out of my house, so I've been at mates playing spilt screen

have you tried jumping into random peoples games?, I had allot of fun doing that, got a mean rocket launcher off a badass and some great exp from doing that

Here's what I've found so far as Mordecai, level 25:

SS Support Machine Gun (Blast 3 green 50 rounds/clip, Static 3 green 50 rounds/clip and standard, 67 round/clip, rapid fire, all do around 49 damage);
SS Nasty Lacerator, Purple, 28/clip standard, 37 damage fanged: +200% melee damage, :twisted
Dahl Desert Cobra: Orange, 28/clip, 78 damage.

Oh, and a Hyperion Liquid Lance: 5 rounds, 188 damage, 97.8 accurate.

I found an epic sniper... in a Skag pile.

It has a very fast fire rate, and I have Carrion Call maxed out, so by the time I'm done shooting the 5 bullet clip, my Bloodwing is ready to go again.
I've pretty much maxed out what I wanted in the Sniper Tier (There's Loaded left), now I'm going for Rogue and the Bloodwing things.

Playing this character coop exclusively with three friends though, so if anyone here wan't to play we'll start over (Or I will only.)
Voice chat preferred (On Steam or anywhere else but the main game, which you can turn off using an ini tweak. I'll detail it if you want.)

By the way, there's a skills in the gunslinger section that give you a chance to critically kill a target, either by melee or by shooting them :twisted. If you haven't, take them. I maxed out the melee one, now I just run into them. ;)

Nah, I'm going for a ranged Mordecai that will shoot his ennemies with a very fast sniper and throw his Bloodwing often at six ennemies or more. ;)
I'll see though, if I get (or already have) a class mod that can help me save a few points, I will spend them in the Gunslinger tree, but otherwise it will remain empty (Unless I find out I need to respec because a skill I took isn't particularly useful, but for now all of them are useful.)

yeh that's what I did as soon as I could get the points for it, loved running past brick and killing everyone up close before he could get his fists into them
I went for an up close Mordecai, barely ever used a sniper with him, bladed pistols and his knife all the way

update soon with my new Brick I started yesterday with the help of mday and some randoms online I leveled pretty fast, currently lvl 20, have the shock and explosive character ability items(they are a cube you put in your skill menu) so when using bricks skill his punches tend to explode people apart

Playthrough 1 completed, now level 41. My Bloodwing can almost blow up cars, and it will if I shoot one sniper bullet at the car first.

Bought the game yesterday, and I love it. I'm sitting at lvl 12 with the Soldier type, and having a blast wailing on anything that comes my way using my Terrible Scattergun, which isn't all that terrible.

Plus, I've got a revolver-fed, pump-action sniper rifle. Awesome.

Got a revolver now that shoots lightning, and makes everything it touches die, so funny and so much fun. :) Not sure how the game's going to keep the weapons continuously get more elaborate. Unless i get an SMG that shoots cows. :g

Right on. Im trying to level up atm. It seems pretty easy. Currently at Lvl 9 or 8 using Lillith. I like her style of combat a lot. Phase Walk is exceptional.

Found any 'Badass' enemies yet? They'll give you a bit of trouble at lower levels. Hell, they give me trouble at lvl 21...

I've got a rocket launcher that launches three rockets in a spiral each time you pull the trigger. And you can shoot it three times. And it does shock damage to boot. (Triakis much?)

Yep, I found me a badass bandit. Arrogant prats, they are. Scary thing was, he and his posse were just outside of the town you start in...As for weapons, Im not getting anything over the top yet. I got a shotgun that does 7 (x12) damage...thats about it...I think its called The Nasty Matador.

This has to be my favourite weapon I've found so far - it's a revolver that regenerates it's own ammo. It basically means I have infinite revolver ammo (I'm mordecai, perfect!) since it doesnt exactly fire ultra fast :D

Ahhhh...how do you get the pics of the weapons? Gearbox is having a "raffle" of sorts. If you post your favorite weapon on their Facebook page, one of the devs randomly pics a some names and sends you Borderlands t-shirts...I desperately want to know how to do this!!

Also, its a bloody shame that the game wont run in 1080p, but its my guess that 2k played a hand in that. Regardless, booting up the game now...

I'm pretty sure the ps3 does not have a print screen feature, or at least the only game it works in is resistance 2. I am using the PC version which lets you right click on the gun and press 'take screenshot'.

Well, just hit Level 12. I dont have nearly enough time to play, as right now its an hour and a half commute to work and Im home at 6 ish (somedays) and in bed by 9ish (most days)...ugghh...anyway, does anyone absolutely LOATHE the controls for driving (ie-- turning). I hate them with a passion and I dont think I can change the button layout. As for weapons, I really havent gotten anything to fancy-schmancy. Desert Sniper with absurd accuracy (91) and damage (well, 71 dmg). Its nice for pluggin high level Skags and Badasses.

And is this a bug in the game?: There are quests that will pop up saying Ive completed them without me having the quest at all. Ill even get trophies for them. For example, driving around and running skags over. It said I completed it, but I didnt even have/ get it yet. Trophy and all...there are a few others, but I cant remember them. Also, a friend of mine and myself were in a game. He had already done the mission but hadnt turned in yet. We both killed (Nine-Toes) cooperatively, only it said that I had to kill him. We had to do the mission like 4 times. I finally just made him wait outside while I did it solo.

the mission bug sucks, I had it yesterday, try going through a teleporter thingy, when I did that yesterday my mission synced up with my mates(splitscreen co-op)

got a rocket launcer that shoots 5 rockets in a row(500% burst fire) its pretty sweet, but yeh lots of guns, lots of shot guns trying to get rid or some but more come, hard to decide what to sell
still enjoying the split co-op but not liking the single player anymore, I refer discovering new stuff with a mate sitting next to me much more more than alone

Finally got my hands on some class mods for my soldier, +65% clip size is awesome (Sledges Shotgun firing 3 shots makes a hell of a mess...)

Regarding the driving controlls, it seems the PC has the worst out of the lot. It's not flash on the 360 either, trying to destroy Bandit Runners is a right pain in the arse with one person.

hey Harvi, just if you didn't know(which I didn't until after playing it for a week and a half) you can lock onto other vehicles with the missile launcher, I think its the X button PS3/A button 360, dunno about the PC
but I usually just get out my buggy and use a strong shot gun or rocket launcher to destroy em
lock on isn't that great but it may help if you overlooked it

For PC, tap space bar to lock on your car's gun to enemies, makes taking out runners (and other enemies) that much simpler.

That's revealed in a later mission. It controls the entrance to the bit near Old Haven you can't use. :)

I'd stopped playing on my friends PS3 and started a new Brick on mine, got to lvl 30 in 2 days, lvlings become allot slower now

so far I've found 4 Eridian weapons, 1 on my mates ps3 and 3 with my current character but lost the first one due to getting disconnected shortly after I picked it up, they have all been green in their colour/color rairty lvl, wondering if other colours are available

I'm not sure if its still buggy or not as their have been a couple updates, I just know my friend's(offline) brother lost his character for no reason and have heard a few cases of this, mostly online
but from my experience (having about 4 lvl 30 characters, 2 on my PS and 2 on my friends) I have had no problems what so ever

well other than the voice chat, that's just plain horse $#ht, I was told to get skype but no one I know uses it

I got this quite awhile ago, found quite allot of cool Shot guns but none with the Ammo Regen like the one like you/mdhay gave me, I'm still using it, 90% of the time it's in my right weapon slot

Loving this game, so glad that I bought it - currently on my 2nd playthrough, and it's so much harder! Try it and you'll see what I mean

My weapon arsenal consists of:

Combat Rifle - 92 damage, 72.4 accuracy, 10.2 fire rate, 72 clip size (134 with my upgrades) It just keeps on firing!

SMG - 65 damage, 88.4 accuracy, 12.5 fire rate, 36 clip size (64 with my upgrades.) It's like a minigun - such a fast fire rate.

Corrosive Sniper - 285 damage, 97.6 accuracy, 2.7 fire rate, 7 clip size (15 with upgrades) X3 corrosive effect. Almost always corrodes enemies, with a good fire rate too

Machine Pistol - 72 damage, 65.4 accuracy, 10.5 fire rate, 50 clip size (65 with upgrades) All the benefits of a machine gun in pistol form

nice arsenal you have there Dark, I love Machine Pistols, I just sold one I've had for ages, think it was about 12 fire rate/115 Damage, I didn't use it much until I found this, it's way lower level and its damage is less than half but the fire kill anything except for the Alien peeps fast

and check out my Rocket Dog I posted before, once I gave it to my other character it lvled down (that was in the span of about 5mins)

I'm not a big fan of the rocket shotguns. The rocket fires too slow for my liking. Much prefer a nice combat rifle or SMG. (Heck, I usually hide behind my turret and let that take the heat for me. I get bonkers mad health regen too)

I've also got an awesome sniper - does ~480 damage with x4 Blast element. Chews its way through practically everything

yeh I'm not a fan of the rocket shot guns either, just really Cool to have found a Rocket Bull Dog
though I do Have a great rocket shotgun on my mates PS3, it has high/spread fire damage that works a charm, my fave guns are Acid Shot Guns and Fire Snipers, I think my Hunters useing a full auto Sniper rifle with fire damage, its got a 4.2 fire rate, makes bloodwing prettymuch always available
I use brick most of the time so hiding does not compute

You're onto something here mate! Ammo boxes/handgrips for combat rifles with large mag sizes (making them into LMG's)

I'd also like to be able to buy scopes. Some of the iron sights on some of the guns are completely useless!

That's the thing with sniping in this game; their head has to fit the small circle in the middle of the scope.

Ok, I got the 4 DLC and finished Zombie Island and Secret Armory (main story, still have to kill Crawmerax).
The point of this post is that I'm looking for a Bordermate! I'm not a trophy hunter but I had look to my trophies and noticed that I need only cooperative trophies to reach Platinum (+ 3 or 4 trivial ones I can get in 1 hour).

So, if any wipers wants to help me or just have fun in coop, make a sign!

I'm a Soldier level 63 and I have all the DLC.

If you have some pearlescent weapons to duplicate... that would be very cool (but not a prioriy)

Orion is good but mine as a low accuracy for a sniper (93%). I saw it on a vid and I said : "I got one like that yesterday... I hope I didn't sell it!". Because I sold an Orion already before, looking at the stats it didn't seem so awesome, but it is :)

I don't know the Serpens... but I got Dead Space 2 last Friday so I'll finally make a break in Borderlands, but I will surely come back to it later, this game is so awesome :rock
