Description:
Zone Battle is a multiplayer variant of the ZONE mode included within the Fury (http://www.wipeouthd.com/fury/)
downloadable content for WipEout HD (http://www.wipeouthd.com/). Contrary to the ZONE mode, Zone Battle
has a preset target zone to be reached. The one who reaches the target zone
first wins the race. To rabidly progress towards the target zone fly over Zone
Pads that are distributed all over the track. These pads will load your craft
with Zone Energy indicated by a Zone Bar displayed on your HUD. The
accumulated energy can either be converted into a boost that will accelerate
your craft to a higher zone level or into vital lost energy your craft depends
on. Each time you boost, a Zone Barrier will be left in your wake as an
obstacle. Avoid these barriers by all means necessary. Hitting a barrier
without being shielded will cost you Zone Energy and a large fraction of your
craft's vital energy. A brief shield is provided by just absorbing your Zone
Energy.
Technical details:
Running over multiple Zone Pads, without using the current accumulated
Zone Energy in-between, will increase your total Zone Energy a lot faster. The
following table shows how the Zone Energy translate to zone levels and vital
energy upon use either by boosting or absorbing the Zone Energy;
[pads, boost, absorb]
01, 0.0, 00.0
02, 0.3, 18.6
03, 0.6, 27.9
04, 1.1, 37.1
05, 1.7, 46.4 -- being save for one barrier hit
06, 2.5, 55.7
07, 3.4, 65.0
08, 4.4, 74.3
09, 5.6, 83.6
10, 6.9, 92.9
11, 8.0, 100
The given values will be indicated by your Zone Bar.
However, there are also some other ways how you can gain some Zone Energy
for example by doing a barrel role, a perfect zone, or a perfect lap;
[action, boost, absorb]
barrel role, 0.1, 12.9
perfect zone, 0.2, 15.7
perfect lap, 0.3, 20.0
based on an empty Zone Bar with one pad already taken. Note that a perfect lap
amounts for about 2 pads.
Hitting a Zone Barrier will decrease your Zone Energy and your vital energy as
follows;
-4 boost, -29.1 absorb, -40 vital energy.
Getting destroyed will cost you 5 zone levels that you had already attained.
Tips & Tricks:
First and formost, get youself familiar with a track where you wanna race a
Zone Battle on. Know where the pads are located and get used to the handling
of your Zone Battle craft. Pretty obvious, isn't it? Wait! ;) How you can
gradually improve will be described on the end of this section. But let's have
a look at some things you should care about when doing Zone Battle;
remember the target zone
watch the rate at which you opponents improve
watch who got eliminated
always try to fill-up your Zone Bar
expect more barriers close to the general racing line, on straights, and
right after and before pads
an opponent having the shield put on won't likely to boost within the next
few pads, but stay sharp, don't necessarily ride straight behind
always remember where you saw a barrier last time around
Filling up your craft with Zone Energy depends on your piloting skills and at
the situation at hand. As longer you can hold up filling your craft with Zone
Energy as further you can go while boosting, but as higher the risk becomes
loosing Zone Energy and vital energy due to a possible barrier hit.
Techniques: How to treat a Zone Barrier?
A Zone Barrier will be indicated ahead of time by a new device installed in
every new Fury craft, called the Barrier Prediction Unit (BPU) displayed on
your HUD. But be careful, this device has its limits.... The BPU will give
you a hint ahead of time where on the track a barrier is positioned once you
are in close proximity. If the BPU flags a barrier then immediately plan an
alternative route and adjust the craft accordingly whether you can just
actually see the barrier or not. Always try to swing-by in a rather smooth way
to not mess up your steering on high speeds. However, if there isn't enough
time or room for a proper swing-by maneuver then, odd as it seems, target the
barrier and to a quick side-shift just before you would actually hit it.
Side-shifting is quite effective on being 'close' to a barrier. Finally, if
there isn't even enough time for a side-shift then the last option left is
your shield.
Hence, depending on the proximity to a barrier, we have the following
techniques one can use to get rid of them;
smooth swing-by
side-shift
shield
Hints:
Don't smash into a wall to dodge a barrier. This would mess up you steering
and will cost lots of vital energy on high speeds.
Since a barrier hit cost 40 vital energy, always try to keep at least this
amount of energy. However, going for victory sometimes means to take the risk
of running sub 40 to collect Zone Energy for the final boost.
If your Zone Bar is almost full and if you got plenty of vital energy
(>> 40) then don't put the shield on for an "inevitable" barrier hit, just
boost through the barrier and refill your vital energy shortly thereafter.
If the BPU fags a barrier (that is currently not within your sight) on the,
for example, left side of the track, then prepare to go for the clear right
side because the indicated barrier may stay closer to the middle of the track
as you might think by just looking at the BPU.
if you got caught by a tie in your brain whether you should go left or
right around a barrier -- activate your shield (if you can)
Wanna annoy your opponents? Then just place a barrier at a blind spot
or watch at what places the BPU fails and place them over there. xD
special: Show that you own the competition by winning a 55 Zone Battle
with 62.9 zones.
I pwn at Phantom Speed Lap, but I suck at Zone Battle. How to git gud am
cry!? xD : I've thought off a way on how everyone can make real progress
in Zone Battle. Go to Racebox and choose Zone Battle (max. zone 55, difficulty
Novice) and choose a track where you wanna improve. Now start the race and
boost up to the zone level you feel quite comfortable with (you can do perfect
laps easily etc.). From there on never boost again! Just let the zone level
increase by itself and try to lap perfectly by practicing to dodge all the
barriers on the track. The AI takes ages to catch up (if you boost up to zone
10 or so). So you got plenty of time practicing the whole thing. If you wanna
have some more barriers on the track then switch over to Skilled.

WipEout HD version 2.0 was released just yesterday. The patch also includes
some (unofficial) changes to the ZONE mode. Here are some things I've spotted;
01: far-view is now as fluent as cockpit-view :sonar
02: the low-shield sound is back :hyper
03: less tearing at some well known spots
04: handling + controller update :D
10: not fully verified: the ZONE craft can take more damage :!
11: halo effect during color-scheme transition; removed
12: voice before start; removed
20: some bugs on low-shield sound
21: more polygonal aliasing :|
22: random huge frame drops now and then :brickwall
more to come ...
Can somebody please verify point 10? I'm not quite sure about it. I hardly
noticed anything on Anulpha Pass (not the best track to test for such a thing,
for me), but I did some test-runs on Vineta K, Moa, and Metropia, and I was
just wondering why the shield didn't decreased as fast as usual when hitting
hard.

I just reached Zone 82, a personal best. I was excited, just thought that maybe I was having a good night. I guess you've shot that down, though... :(
btw, shields have a little green meter and countdown on your health during races, I've noticed.

Heh, I don't get why they removed the bloom again, it was a cool effect. Epilepsy tests didn't agree once more? Or the framerate in Zone Battle?
Control update makes zone zeus imo even more easy. I had a piss poor run trying to test your damage theory (I'm still unsure, though I think the ship seems fairly resistant as it can have two light scrapes and remain at the same energy percentage) and still got to 76. I made a perfect lap on zone 60, that doesn't happen.

I noticed an improvement in controller responsiveness as well... got 37 consecutive perfect zones on my first post-patch zone attempt (though I suspect the removal of the beautiful but annoying bloom effect has a major part to play in this), my previous record being 26. The accuracy was very unusual at higher speeds, though, but I probably just need to get used to it... maybe I can get to zone 80 now. :)
The return of the beeping when under 10% shield is probably going to drive me crazy, though. :robot

#10 could be true I suppose. I was trying out wipeout 2097 hud yesterday, so its hard to tell how much shield you have left when you're below 50%. Eg when you have 70 shield I think the bar itself is half full. So it appeared to me that my shield went down slower, but I may have just had more initially if you know what I mean. Anyway I'll see when I go back to HD hud.
Also am I the only one who prefers the close up view? The craft feels more easier to control that way.

Regarding #10: I'm not convinced. I've beat a couple of my zone scores since the update, namely moa therma and anulpha pass. But both of those were down to more perfect zones/laps and a couple more barrel rolls. On Anulpha I actually died around zone 71 I think, zone 75 being my furthest. And on Moa I died on zone 59, the same zone as my previous record.

Framerate. But still, the transition effect isn't as smooth as it could be.
Within the next days I will link a 720p@60fps video from the pre-build version
of WipEout HD ZONE, Anulpha Pass, that clearly shows that they got the thing
right before. To whet your appetite, it looks awesome!

I use it as well, but not for a record run. Not just yet.

I got a BIG smile on my face as the bleeping noise kicked in. Holy!

Ok, here is my take about the ZONE score.
... I'm wondering about two little things:
- Zone scores are sorted first by score, then by zone, not the other way around. ... Why did you choose to do it this way? ...
It makes sense to be sorted by score. Score also shows how many speed pads and BR's you've done, and that takes skill since it's a risk / reward system. Many BR's = many points but less shield. You have to compensate this by doing perfect zones. Also, speed pads are dangerous so they should also be rewarded.
A pretty interesting system if you ask me.
I have to agree. The thing is, it wouldn't be half as interesting if total zones
cleared comes first. One can always catch someone on the leaderboard
just by the score, which will bother both parties if you think about it. Ergo,
both start to improve and the thing becomes even more heated. Even
worse, there is no special reward for reaching a higher zone xD, since the
rate of change of the (default) score counter remains constant. The only
thing, in the end, that really pays off is doing perfect laps at higher zones,
since as higher one goes as less time it takes to go around the track.
I'm not saying that the score should not be taken into account, I'd just rather have:
. Rank 1: 130 Zones, 400000 points
. Rank 2: 129 Zones, 400001 points
. Rank 3: 129 Zones, 400000 points
Than:
. Rank 1: 400001 points, 129 Zones
. Rank 2: 400000 points, 130 Zones
. Rank 3: 400000 points, 129 Zones
I tell you what. Your than-case is the one that builds up the competition!
The one ranked in position 1 is pissed xD coz he didn't do a 130 and he
essentially feels the pressure form the one in second place. The one in
second place is also pissed being only in second place despite he can hold
up for ten seconds longer. And the one in third place even thinks he can
be first!
... But in the end did people go for the score or the zones?
My feeling is that score seems more important because the leaderboards are made this way. Make them the other way around and we'd enjoy Zone even more. Wouldn't we? ...
EDIT: And Rita agrees!! (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/07/22/wipeout-fury-developer-diary-creating-the-new-zone-tracks/) ;)
‘Zone’ is speed experienced in its purest state
ZONE can be considered as a path leading to perfection, a kind of perfection
that has a memory (your score) that depends on all the previous things you
have done. So one essentially carries a load around when doing ZONE. Being
in the need for doing perfect zones / laps at very high speeds, given that
load, builds up a huge pressure. And now it depends on you whether you can
hold up or not.
One will never get the feeling being in the ZONE if he won't carry a very
valuable thing around. Further, perfection is always a limiting process and
not a lucky shots.
ZONE is walking this special path leading to perfection. Everytime I seriously
try to go for a record I feel like being on a mission, a mission toward a goal
that is virtually untouchable.
And speed, speed is only one part of the equation. The speed gradually
isolates one from all those things not necessary, it essential puts you right
on track....
EDIT:
But guillaume, don't get me wrong. I had once the same opinion like you.
Zones cleared and nothing else! But everything has turn around never
thought possible. ZONE is something one has to get in touch with until one
see the clear picture. So even from my text above one might likely not get
it. One needs to be 'there' by his very own. It's hard to put in words.

I'm not really a huge fan of zone mode (which really hampers your progress as you play...), mostly becuse it takes so long to get to the interesting bit. I wish they would shorten the duration of zones 1-50 so you could get through them faster. Just a little. I feel like I've sat there for ages and am getting bored, and the announcer says "Zone 13, complete!"... gaaaaah...
You would still have a gradual increase in speed. It just feels like a bit of a chore TBH. My feelings about zone went from "I hate this crap" to "hmm, this is allright, actually" after I could regularly get into the 50-60+ zones. 1-50 just isn't FUN for me at all.

@RobCox: Glad that you made it over here. :+
@okam: Yeah would be cool if the speed increases just a bit faster on
lower zones.
@Handmdelion: "zone journey" sounds kinda cool. Tell us about your
project! :nod
I'm really interested to see how all the enhanced Zone Battle crafts stack up
against the ZONE craft. And I hope that these crafts to keep a certain (team-)
individuality. If you look at it, the new crafts are somehow a forerunner for
higher speed classes, don't you think? The only question is; how do they
behave at very high speeds?
Second, I really hope that the lag isn't killing Zone Battle. I mean, just
imagine being somewhere in zone 75+ and someone suddenly drops a zone
barrier. Essentially, a zone barrier is kinda of a singularity, but from the
Fury trailer I saw that SL has lowered the order this singularity by smoothing
it out to a certain degree. If your are going to use the boost then a zone
barrier builds up behind your craft. If you look closely then you will see
that this barrier remains attached for a certain amount of time. Within that
time frame the information might be distributed to all other players. Would be
awesome if this was the solution to get that singularity resolved. So you
actually have some time to react on someone who is currently dropping a
zone barrier. And I have to say, I like how these barriers detaches from the
craft. There is a certain oscillation to it.

I've worked out zone battle a little bit. Each speed pad you go over increases the boost guage.
The 1st pad gives you nothing, the 2nd pad 0.3 zones worth, the 3rd takes it up to 0.6, and then things get interesting.
Each pad after this moves the zone bar up more than the last, it might be as simple as +0.4, +0.5 etc etc. But it maxes out when you reach 8 zones.
So the worst strategy would be to use up your zone bar every 2 speed pads: this would give you 0.3 zones per 2 speed pads, and would take 55 speed pads to go up 8 zones doing it this way.
However it only takes 12-13 speed pads if you save it up. A massive difference.
Of course you may want to use your bar straight away at the start of a race to get ahead and make getting perfect zones/laps easier :)
These also fill up your zone bar, not sure how much yet.

Holy! Everything turns out to be so good. Zone Battle is awesome! Hell, it
works! There is competition and the thing about risk and reward works as
well. Nice! I like it.
At the moment, I have only minor things to complain;
- *barrier, barrier, barrier, ...* xD, perhaps there might be a
better solution
- the barriers remain for too long
- can't distinguish a barrier behind another one
- *perfect lap* cuts / delays the *barrier* voice as well as
*target attainable* voice
- only zone 55? Eh?
- wanna play Zone Battle as a tournament :D
Have you all played the new ZONE-only tracks? They are mind-blowing right
from the start. :dizzy All these structures ... http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/m-love5.gif ... nice! It's like an enhanced
ZONE experience. And the new color schemes are as smooth as the given
track itself. :)

Thanks for posting the info Reezy, that is really going to solve the problem I was having. I was trying to win the ZB events in the campaign on Elite at first, and was already 4-5 zones behind by the end of the first lap.
So It's better to save the boost then use it right away, as the amount you get per pad increases the more you have saved. Great stuff.
And the perfect zones/laps stuff is pretty important to winning on Elite I believe.

@ProblemSolver :
oh hell yeah, Zone tacks are awesome, and challenging too with turn that requir much skill : you cannot only steer, but too much airbrake and it's the inner wall...
Supersonic on Syncopia, you didn't waste your time, very nice!
about zone battle : Modesto reverse is hard, because of many double speed pads, there are barriers every where!
blackwiggle
24th July 2009, 03:15 PM
That's only unless you release your own ZONE blast [circle] you can overtake every craft and beat it within seconds
Depending on what ZONE you are at & how many speed pads you have run over ,well ,depending on timing of release you can beat ZONE BATTLE with one press of a button

... So It's better to save the boost then use it right away, as the amount you get per pad increases the more you have saved. Great stuff. ...
Yeah most of the time. Risk and Reward. :D
There is another thing to consider. If you can even remember the barriers
from last lap, then you get a feeling when to use the shield and when to go
for a full boost bar with less risk. ;)
@djKyoto: They might, but they aren't. From a design point of view it's rather
difficult to reduce something to the maximum. They show pure essence, no
overhead or anything alike. However, I love zoning the other new tracks as
well. There are some nice little touch-ups such as the dotted lines on sharp
corner etc..
@Spece2goin: xD Yeah right, esp. those two turns on Coridon 12 are quite
tough. I never played any of the new track before (yep, I started out with
HD), but playing Syncopia was / is ... uhh ... so breathtaking.
@Reezy: You will. :D
The Online Rank does contribute, you have to battle (win) against high birds.
But it seems that lvl 40+ players won't likely play Zone Battle that much. I
don't know. I had only about three or four lvl 40+ on my server, yesterday,
and I was playing for hours.

I knew you would like Syncopia, beautiful track. I seem to be oversteering or overbraking a lot on the new zone tracks (the pure 4) but with time and practice I will improve. Congrats on Supersonic already there, top effort.

hello there, just came back home for the weeek-end and just wanted to post a hot reaction for the new zone battle mode.
I get mixed feeling about this
The boost thing is really a good thing, first speeds are boring it's very nice to be able to go further that way. But I'm a bit disappointed by the traps the opponent can put in front of you. I started last so the first person had already a slight advantage and could put that sort of things. It's not the way I like zone mode, for me zone mode is all about concentration, pushing the limits as far as you can, taking the best lines you can take, adding this just ruins the whole experience imho :(
I would have liked a zone mode with no collision, just play with another player side by side and trying to raise each other to a higher ground, but instead of playing together players are just opponents, I would like some sort of cooperative mode for zone, but as I said, this is just a hot reaction so don't take it too seriously, I would like to thank SL for what they've done, I guess everyone's got his own vision about the game and would like it to be like that :)
have a nice evening guys, I'm worried that I won't be able to play with you, as I'm not home those days, so I just play pulse atm, but I hope I'll soon be able to play with you :)
have fun !
(didn't read the new posts on this thread, I wonder what you guys think about this, see that tomorrow)

I have a feeling zone battle will be better played with fewer people, or less "noobs" who drop their barriers every other speed pad they go over.
This may be a good strategy when you see someone behind you and you drop it like a bomb, or on a blind bend.
However, at this early stage where most people don't have much clue what they're doing, they're droping them left right and centre. They have no chance to win themselves, and may spoil a good duel, truel, quadule, or quintule between the more skilled players :P
Hope that doesn't come across too elitist, but I feel this mode will become (even) more fun (than it already is) and competitive once people are on a level playing field.

I agree. I'm not saying i don't like Zone Battle. It's pretty damn good! But i don't see why SL didn't just create a mode for 2 or even 8 players where you race zones until you die. The last one standing wins, and the first one to die loses etc etc. In my opinion that would have been a lot better.
But hey, i've only played a moderate amount of Zone Battle at the moment so this is also a bit of a hot reaction. I'll probably get to like it more after i've played it a little more ;).

At first (the very first game of detonator) I thought it was awesome. It had an arcade feel to it. The little "blaster" sounds you hear when you shoot and stuff, it was just really neat. And then came the mad requirements to even get a bronze metal on elite. I spent a long, long time going through long, long sessions only to die without a medal. Ever since then I've been working my way through the campaigns skipping the detonator games. I do them when I absolutely have to.

I have no problems reaching Gold Medal on Elite Detonator so hopefully you shall too once I'm done answering your questions. :)
I made a video, will upload it soon to my Youtube Channel, to show how I play Detonator. I play the same way on Campaign, so if you imitate you'll get much higher scores than those needed on Elite :)

I got supersonic first try on it also (77 zones) :beer
I saw your score there on the leaderboard, over 100k clear of anyone else. Very nice.:clap
I liked and didn't like the Supersonic coloring scheme (it was easier to see, but it didn't look as cool as the neon blue/black, mind your Mach 1 has gone from ass to awesome). I havn't tried doing zone again on a HD track yet, but is the zone coloring scheme still the same or is it gold/white for supersonic on all the tracks now or just the special zone 4?

H e l l , Syncopia is my new Anulpha Pass! You were right, Silverfox! I just
played some more runs yesterday by listen to Fury's sound tracks. Oh my god,
it's so unbelievable. And this new SUPERSONIC color scheme is so kick a$$!
You have to see it in motion! But all the new color schemes are sooo great.
Initially I had some concerns about the color-banding moving in front of the
craft, but it works out. Everything fits together like never before; the coloring,
the smoothness, and the overall beauty clearly makes it better than zoning
on the standard tracks. I never thought saying this, but it's true. But this
isn't to say that I don't like zoning on all the standard tracks. :)
My new Synco record reads 108 / 86. And I'm nowhere near any limits. :dizzy
Unfortunately, no new color scheme for zone 100. Ritaaa, don't leave me
alone up there! Please!

schemes are only different for all the special tracks, right.

I love the colours on the new zone tracks. These were definitely worth the effort of putting in the game as they are so silky smooth in every way compared to zone on the main tracks I think.
Zone Battle is great, but for online it really needs a no collisions option as clangy banging into other ships just doesn`t fit the zone "aesthetic" for me as it`s all about pure piloting.

I've now played the hell out of Zone Battle, did about 100 online races
and got some good advices together that may help you quite a lot. Apply
them wisely and you may even pwn my a$$. ;) I will post them within the
next few days.
Ah, the *barrier, barrier, barrier, ...* voice isn't that enjoying anymore since
not everyone releases the boost just after two pads. As a consequence, one
will see less barriers on the track. It works.
@lunar: So you love the schemes as well? Nice! :) But I won't remove the
collision since it makes one aware of the opponents. :+
@RobCoxy: Don't know about 150 but a 130 will follow. I had a massive
crash on zone 115 (losing a good portion of my shield) but I was able to hold
up till zone 120 thanks to the low-energy noise. This noise really helps since
it tells you; Dude, keep it up or the show is over! And this forces one (me)
to rise the attention once more. But it drain mental energy like crazy. xD
@djKyoto: Hey, nice to see you on ZONE. :) Didn't saw you on the old tracks.
Do you somehow know / like the special tracks from Pure?
@Zoth-Ommog: A torture? Yes, it can. I just did a 55 on Sebenco Climb. Oh
hell. xD
@AnErare: Your're back as well. Good work. :+
@sh1kamaru-: Why don't you like the barriers? :eek I don't know but it's

Got to say I love zone battle.
I was never a big fan of zone until now. I think it must be because it isn't such a lonely mode to play any more. Whenever I was playing it I always thought it was a bit anti-social and there was a lot more fun to be had elsewhere online. The colour scheme on the new tracks is just beautiful. Well done SL I think FURY is even better than HD. :+

Despite all the teams have 100% stats I'm very pleased that they have kept
their individual character.
After going though all the teams I can safely say that the Feisar is the most
difficult to control on higher zones. The Feisar behaves like a horse on a
rempage, you have to be pretty tight on the airbrakes. So up to my point it's
not a good advice to go with Feisar for a Zone Battle (btw; you won't likely
see any Feisar in Zone Battle, anyways), if you can't be as tight on the
airbrakes as hell. If you wanna have a rather smooth run then use, for
example, a Piranha -- butter smooth! But it's rather unlikely that you will
meet me in a battle not riding a Feisar. The advantage of Feisar is simply
that you can swing between Zone Barriers that are closely behind each other,
if you can control it, of course. It's a high risk, for sure, but kinda cool
as well.

@AnErare: Your're back as well. Good work. :+
Yes I am! Thanks. Almost only my effort on Tech de Ra has so far been paying off. I've been so heftly put down by the colour transitions when I started back in Januari that I'd grown to hate zone in HD..
The feeling of something this big missing in this game I love so much has finally, and luckily, been replaced by the wonder of the pure four. I'm starting to let the hideous feelings go and fill them with these wonders returned.
And I've seen zeus on Syncopia too. Surely a picture displays what it looks like but to actually fly in it.. Wow, just wow! Amazing. My mouth fell open with amazement. Oh yes I will certainly thrive on the magic of zone once more :)
Despite all the teams have 100% stats I'm very pleased that they have kept
their individual character.
The same applies to Pulse as well. They differ so much. But the lesser controls of Pulse made it virtually impossible to reach ultra high zones with the heavy ships although they are actually smaller. Probably to compensate the characteristics of the physics engine.

Great guide for zone battle, pretty much covers everything.
I noticed some mechanics that you might want to add:
Shield lasts 5.0 seconds no matter how high your gauge is.
Barrier damage is 40 no matter how high your gauge is when you create it.
Falling off track damage is 40. (Ouch!)
Also your gauge increases substantially the more you have in it. This applies to not only speed pads, but perfect zones, perfect laps, and barrel rolls as well. This can make a barrel roll worth the 10 damage if your gauge is near full.
Show that you own the competition by winning a 55 Zone Battle
with 63.9 zones.
I hate you.

i finally made it to the cream dream of super sonic on syncopia and will crack the top 20 when scores are updated!! hooray!!11 its nice that super sonic is so much easier on the eye than nasty mach one. its also pretty cool that your nose is constantly pitched up. the craft is kind of putting its arms up going wheeeee!!!

I too made it to the cream on syncopia today, zone 95 :), a bit of practice and hopefully ill be hitting 100 and over. Im happy right now. :rock

I find syncopia rather difficult :o
I can't be as gentle with the airbrakes as I'd like to be :D
I prefer tracks where you have to rammstein-airbrake like the 3 curves after the mag lock on moa therma :)
anyway I've made a screenshot at zone speed (my favorite colour scheme) at 80% saturation

tkx a lot man!
BRs cost 15 vital energy, as usual. :nod

3rd August 2009, 02:05 PM
Who here agrees that Sub-Phantom is the best speed class? Colours are great for concentration, not so slow that it'll blow your brains out with boredom, and not too fast that it'll make you start pinballing. And P.S. I was wondering, at what Zone does not having 100% health become legal? I usually enter Subsonic with 92% on Moa.
ProblemSolver
3rd August 2009, 03:10 PM
@CJS: I have to agree on the Sub-Phantom thing. It's quite a pleasing speed
to cruise 'n chill.
As long as you can do BRs in a safe way it's kinda of a crime to have 100%
vital energy. xD I usually level it down on tracks where one can do BRs, and
later on level it up to go without BRs from there on. Having 100% at certain
stages is a good indicator for how long your run may last. For example, on
Anulpha Pass it's quite pleasing to have about 100% on zone 115. But anyways,
that's not the key. The key is whether you can profit from doing a perfect lap
when it becomes really difficult. Why? Well, on very high zones, depending on
the track, one cannot any longer judge whether he did a perfect zone or not,
because 'looking' at the HUD can mess up the entire run. But there is one
thing that really helps, it's the voice saying; perfect lap. Once you hear
that voice you know that if you now run without any scratch around the track
for a couple of seconds your vital energy fills up rather quickly. Within
these seconds one has to be rather strong to not touch the walls. It may allow
you to go 5 or even 10 zones farther in the end. One perfect lap with a few
perfect zones thereafter can make up for a huge difference. It's a pure
psychological thing....

I say that it has a "the ONLY G:donutDDAMN THING I'VE EVER GOTTEN ZONE 75 ON GRAFFITI FLAVOUR TO IT"!!! Props Syncopia! I love you! (Although Supersonic wasn't black, it was gold O_o) :rock Zone Zeus is MINE!
Edit: In my opinion, I think that they should have a new speed class come in at Zone 100, called Terminal Velocity... that would be cool. Everything would be completely black, all you would see are white outlines...

OMG I broke my PS3 by playing ZONE! I was on a run to set another record on the
table as my PS3 was going to freeze! Damnit!
Suddently the screen freezed and after about 2 seconds therafter my PS3 turned off.
I quickly realized that the RSX isn't fully working anymore, so I started my PS3 up
again and quickly changed the bootflag over to OtherOS, because the OtherOS, i.e.
PS3Linux, can't use the RSX' main functionallity since the PS3s Hypervisor prevents
it from doing so. As a result, my PS3Linux was fully functional such that I could do a
final backup of my entire system. I then switched the bootflag back to GameOS by
realizing at the same time that I will never come back to see Linux again on my PS3.
The GameOS was coming up once again for about 30 seconds after my PS3 turned off
forever.
My PS3 got the infamous YLOD (Yellow Light of Death), which can have various
issues. But since the Cell processor was working for over an hour, the issue must be
related to the RSX processor. Almost all 60GB-PS3 models do suffer from a heating
problem were either the Cell or the RSX can loses contact to the motherboard due to
a melting issue. This problem is quite well known and can be fixed with a bit of luck.
Some guys on YT show how to do it, but I'm not considering doing it.
In the past I always noticed that the fan was coming up rather fast playing WEHD.
And with the advent of Fury I thing that the RSX is at it's limits, radiating maximum
heat as a result. So playing ZONE for hours and hours may have put a good burden
onto my system over time. For me it was only a question of time when my PS3 is
going to break.
Sh!t happens. Anyways, I'll be back quite soon! :nod

As hell? Eh? ;)
Aeroracer

In F-Zero GX, there was this track in the story mode without walls. Really hard and challenging. The entire track was half transparant, changing smoothly from one color to another, covering every color of the rainbow (I hope this is a clear description). The background was very dark as far as I remember. That would be really cool for Zone 100.

hmmmm I disagree with you ProblemSolver about the perfect lap thingy. That's exactly why I use a custom hud. the bar that show the energy is a clear indicator for me to where I'm able to go, when I did 81 on moa I knew I was going to go very high when I reached zone 70 with a high shield, and at the same time I was pissed to have made some stupid errors in lower speeds :/
I just said myself, no matter, go ! :)
The thing is : you cannot _see_ very well your shield with the standard hud, and the human eye is faster to interprete pictures than figures so I admit your reasoning is right with the standard hud, but well, I do think that the Wip3out hud is better :)
Another thing is those little dots on the bottomleft that indicates the seconds you have done in a zone. They are far more distinguishable than those on the standard hud :)

speed classes for ZONE, i.e. TRANSSONIC and HYPERSONIC for zone 100

look like? Some funky ideas? ...
After reading D777 post (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showpost.php?p=143401&postcount=30), I recognized that I messed up TRANSONIC. Going
by real physics SUPERSONIC already includes TRANSONIC. Right. And
HYPERSONIC is quite to far away on the velocity scale for WipEout HD. xD
In mathematics we usually don't really use the engineering terms to classify
a flow regime because those don't incorporate important quantities that are
essential to all of aerodynamics. The single most important quantity is the
so-called Reynolds number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynolds_number).
Given that number it is possible to compute a fluid-flow simulation around
the ZONE craft based on the Navier-Stokes equations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navier%E2%80%93Stokes_equations), the equations of
fluid motion. As a result, we would essentially see how the ZONE craft
sheds vortices and how the shock waves build up round the craft and how
they are reflected back and forth on the track. I tell you, that would be the
most stunning thing ever.
Here is an example of an aircraft flying at transonic / supersonic speed
with some visible shock waves;
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/3093/shockwaves.th.jpg (http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/3093/shockwaves.jpg)
However, doing such a simulation and visualization is very time consuming
and very complicated to set up and to compute, esp. if you wanna simulate
the flow at transonic / supersonic speed (very high Reynolds number flow).
You can compare it to an actual fluid-flow simulation around a jet-fighter.
Anyways, I can do it. I've studied it all and have done similar simulations
before. Would be a nice spare time project. :) I just simply need the
surface vertices of the ZONE craft. The only one condition is that these
vertices should be aligned in such a way that after triangulation a
mesh would result without any holes.
Have a break...

I lol'd! xD Good work.
@RobCoxy: Welcome to teh club! Finally! :D
@sh1kamaru-: I can't see how your sayings contradict my perfect lap thing.
Btw; I use the 2097 HUD. What I was talking about is the following. Near the
end of a run you won't likely do perfect laps and you may fight against the
loss of concentration. But all of a suddently you do a perfect lap and the
indicating voice may push your concentration up again for a few seconds to
gather one or two more perfect zones thereafter.
I already assume that one gives his best, but holding up one's concentration
over time (over a long period) is impossible. There are ups and downs. Not
doing any perfect lap near the end of a run gradually kills your concentration.
But doing a perfect lap will bump it up again for a few seconds. That's my
experience, at least. I tell you, I did a perfect lap at zone 130 over at
Syncopia on my 136 run. Everything turn out the way I have written before.
I did two more perfect zones thereafter and essentialy got to zone 136
because my concentration was at peak again. So from my perspective it's
really worth trying to push for one or two more perfect zones after a perfect
lap at very high zones. That is not to say that I'm not always trying to do a
perfect lap / zone! It's a pure psychological thing. Don't know if you can
follow me here.
... I just said myself, no matter, go ! ...
True. But the situation is different if you go for the top. If you can say
no matter then you already lost lots of points. It might improve you
personal best, sure, but....

Holy my new record got updated. Right Wotan, I did a 100+ on Pro Tozo.
You also had some good runs over there and at Syncopia. Not bad. :clap
Running a 102 on Pro Tozo was quite a tough job to do. My heart was
beating at about 150 as I was closing-in to zone 100. xD But at the same
time the degree of perfection rised like nothing else. I essentially became
one with the track. :sonar Pro Tozo is really special in that regard because
the whole track is utterly smooth.

15th August 2009, 12:18 PM
Problem Solver - I have to disagree with Pro Tozo being "smooth"
I find that from subsonic onwards it feels as if your craft is bouncing along the track rather than going smoothly. On the left, right, left turns halfway round I find it the worst. It really messes up my poor little eyes and how on earth you manage 27 more zones after 75 is amazing.
Are you sure you're a man and not a really clever machine ??? :clap
ProblemSolver

Problem Solver - I have to disagree with Pro Tozo being "smooth" ...
I know what you mean. Well the smoothness I'm refering to is the overall
smoothness of the track including the way how the curves are designed and
that there are no discontinuities (jumps) and so on. But that's not to say
that I don't like it the other way around.
Yeah there are some bumps on the track, they spice everything up. xD
Just a hint; If you "watch" this special rather bumpy right-left section
closely then you may find a path through it without any bumps. ;) I hope
you have the rumble pack turned on.
Some people disable the rumble pack coz they get distracted by it, but it's
a disadvantage to play without coz one will lose an important information.
Also, when running over speed pads the leveling-off of the rumble tells one
for how long the current boost last, which translates to distance. But not
only this. Since the dynamics of the ZONE craft changes with an increase
in speed one can essentially use this information to adjust the steering
more precisely.
Now get Wotan! :g
... and how on earth you manage 27 more zones after 75 is amazing.
Business as usual. xD
Uh Kingheim, you did a 100 on C12. :clap I think you can do a 100

17th August 2009, 06:54 PM
@kingheim: Doing 102 zones on Pro Tozo was tough, I have to admit,
esp. when reaching this zone for first time, it's like entering an unexplored
world. It's pretty insane how one has to steer the craft around when being
close to zone 100.
@CJS: lol @ not using the left airbrake till zone 64. Getting paid for 100
perfect zone? Yeah, why not? xD
@sh1kamaru-: Ah Anulpha Pass -- the old story. Once the leaderboard gets
fixed (<-- I lol'd) I'll give Anulpha Pass another try. I think I can do a 130+/105+
(possibly a 132 / 106) but this would be rather close to the maximum. I think
a 135 / 110 is the ultimate limit for Anulpha Pass.
I've noticed an odd thing after the release of Fury. Breaking some old
records is a bit more difficult now when being on a similar run. The day
Fury was released I did some runs on Anulpha Pass and I noticed that I
missed certain checkpoints by two or three thousands points. I never
talked about it since I thought it was just me. But doing some runs over
at Metropia now showed me the same behavior. This effect gets even more
pronounced when reaching higher zones despite BRs, pads, perfect zones,
and perfect laps are rewarded like before. In general, I would say that
one now needs a few more perfect zone (given the same amount of zones)
to brake the same score on an HD track. It seems like that the general
score counter counts a bit slower now and that this adds up on higher
zones. Anyone?
But there are some good things as well. I just once wrote about the
steering issue;
... At very small steering angles the craft is unstable, meaning, a small
steering input leads to a "large" (and abrupt) turning of the craft. The
problem worsens as the speed goes up. There is even a small dead-zone
on using the stick. ...
Well, all these issues have been fixed. :) It took me only a few runs to
get 51 perfect zones out of Metropia. Up to my point of view it should be
possible to improve perfect zones on lower / mid zone runs (in the range
of 90 - 40) by about 3 or 5 due to all the fixes. Just try! :sonar
The controls (i.e. the airbrakes) are just fine in the range of zone 0 to 110.
But after zone 110 they become sort of twitchy again. I don't know why the
controls have to be so sensitive. Lack of testing? Likewise in Zone Battle,
the agility of the Feisar is overpaced when racing zone 40+.

silverfoxy
19th August 2009, 09:54 AM
@ ProblemSolver - I can't be 100% sure but I haven't noticed any difference in the Zone scoring. Had a good few goes on Rev VinK the other day and usually I'm at 100k when it changes from SuperPhantom to Zen (assuming you're perfect to this point) and it was always around the 100k mark (when I did the first 34 perfect - which wasn't as often as I'd have liked!) previously and seems to be the same now.
However, I will keep my eye out on other zone tracks.
Getting to 90 on Pro yesterday was a blast, felt so good running a couple of PLs in the 80s. Finding Mach1 less of a struggle than before but it does take my eyes a few seconds to adjust from the blackness of Mach to the brightness of Supersonic. Makes it easier to get further though, they should introdue the white scheme to both APs.
Also had a few quick Zone battles with kingheim yesterday. It was great fun as it was just the 2 of us to begin with, then a random joined and just dropped barriers after every boost. Grrrr. then Billychanextreme (sorry, can't remember your correct spelling) joined and had a good couple of games. I thought doing BRs lost 40 energy points but its only 15. Will have to do them more in future.

Its like you say barney, some are updating some aren't.
For example, I did zone108 on Syncopia yesterday afternoon around 2pm, then did a Zone90 on Pro an hour later.
By 6pm the score on Pro had updated on the global records but the one on Syncopia hadn't.
Not sure if its because Syncopia is more popular or what it is. It doesn't seem as bad as it was a few weeks ago though.

Awesome! Some more perfect zones and you got me. Yeah 150 is possible, I
had half shield on my 141 run but lost almost all on zone 140. But that's
the way it always ends, it's an all or nothing situation, esp. on Syncopia.
Fortunately, we now have some good competition going on the Pure4 tracks.
I tell you, it was a bit boring on HD, but now a lot more people are interested
in the ZONE experience. :)
@XBARNSTERX:
The leaderboard doesn't update again. kingheim already did a 102 on
Mallavol, but the leaderboard is silent. :| Anyways, I hope you stick around.
@sh1kamaru- & silverfoxy:
You won't likely really notice it that much at Subsonic because the
difference is very small. But from zone 75 onwards it becomes noticable,
and from zone 100 onwards (on Anulpha Pass) it's clear to me. Anyways, I
will try to prove my point somehow. I already got an I idea. As I wrote, I
suppose that the general score counter counts a bit slower now, neglecting
points from BRs, pads, PZs, and PLs. But the question is, is it really the
score counter? Usually the counter seems to count at a constant rate when
the craft isn't touching anything, but if one scratches along a wall then
the counter slows down (as usual), it even gets to a stand-still when the
craft does. I now suppose that there is a tiny dependency on the velocity
of the craft even if the craft isn't touchning anything. Hence, either the
counter counts slower by design or the craft's acceleration is a bit slower
than before leading to a lower velocity at certain stages. I'm going to check
this out. I will run up to zone 120 on AP, crash the craft and compare the
top speed against some result screens I took on my first two 120 runs at AP
(pre-Fury). They both showed a top-speed of 1810km/h and 1811km/h,
respectively. So I think the top speed of zone 120 is 1800km/h (pre-Fury).

... When are we going to see you attacking Corridon and Mallavol anyway ??? ...
Not anytime soon because with the advent of Fury my interest in Online Play
and Speed Lap grows at a rate like never before. Due to my zoneage I'm only
competitive (esp. when weapons are off) on those tracks where I hold a record
in ZONE. And, I virtually never played any of the reverse tracks nor do I know
all the shortcuts and BRs, which sucks when you wanna play online a lot. So
instead of going for a high ZONE run on Mallavol and C12 I decided to give
myself a serious go on Speed Lap, on a track which is new to everyone, to
see if I can be as competitive as the high birds flying around. The track I've
chosen is Tech De Ra. After some Speed Laps at TDR I was able to set a
21:77, ranked 12, which wasn't even my best run when considering sectors.
And if I'm able to pull two more BRs (can only do two atm since I'm not used
to pull BRs quickly enough), which should be possible somehow, then I think
I may perhaps come very very close to yeldar's 21:05, ranked 1, using my
Feisar. I essentially miss the BR after start/finish and the one, one can do
within the downhill section while jumping over the little crest. Since I'm
off-topic now, I just wanna know whether it's possible to pull a BR while
jumping over the apex of the last right-turn or not?
In essence, I wanna become a complete WipEouter. Being good in ZONE is
only one side of the coin. But ZONE will always be where my love goes http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/m-love5.gif,
and you can be assured that I will attack Mallavol and C12 hard. http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/j-devil2.gif So crank
up the zones as high as possible.

My two cents about the zone 2685 guy: it should take MONTHS of consecutive playing to get there. No way he used not some kind of dirty cheat.

On a good run i'll normally be perfect up until Mach 1... Supersonic sometimes. I can do perfect laps over zone 100 too, but i will definitely make a mistake somewhere down the line. Some of the other guys here will probably be perfect up to close to zone 100, i'm sure they'll tell you soon as i can't say for sure ;).
silverfoxy
22nd August 2009, 08:36 PM
My best effort on Syncopia is around 70 perfect in a row. The thing is not to worry too much about the odd mistake and just make sure you do the next zone or lap perfect. Its pretty hard to keep concentration for close to/over 20 minutes so the odd mistake doesn't hurt and will help resharpen your focus.
To get through the first few zones I try to see how fast I can get to 100,000. Zone 27 is the quickest I've made it but I can never hit every speed pad for some reason. Then just do 1 BR per lap to slowly build my energy back up. If I make a mistake from subsonic onwards I don't do a BR that lap. I personally use this all the way to about zone 85/90, I know others will use it to beyond 100. Its just how comfortable you are about how far you can get. To me it feels a bit weird going round Syncopia with 100% energy, just feels wasteful !! However, from 100 onwards its very easy to make a little mistake that leads into a big one that can use over 50% of your energy.
sh1kamaru-
22nd August 2009, 08:49 PM
did 66 in a row and then crashed very hard. I managed to stay the whole 90s with low energy, sometimes recovering it and losing it after, did 97/76 (so close to zone 100 xD)
as my aim is 300k/zone 100, I just checkpoints frequently. for instance zone 50 I should be at 150k normally but since I do a perfect beginning, I get more points so that helps me a lot to say myself I've got a good run ^^. It turns out that I break 200k at zone 55 :)
for now I'm at 298k/97z perhaps I should go for 350k/120z to actually break 300k/100z :D

no one plays Zone Battle online and that is a shame. I hope it is not discontinued is future iterations of the game, as it is a smart, tacticlal, difficult, fun game mode.:bomb
I agree with you 100%

Zone 148? What should I say, that's a superb result! :+

It isn't. ;)
yes you can do a BR on the last turn on TDR ...
Have seen the video. Not too bad! Hopefully I can reproduce this using my
Feisar. Are you really using an DS3 and the stick to do BRs? You can pull them
so fast. Nice!
@Matt_XIII_67: Hey, good work on AP R. :+ Wellington should think about a
serious comeback.
108/81 -> 320k
106/89 -> 345k youhou :D
I finally come to love syncopia, I just wait for the ice cream and can't help but love the work Rita's done on the pure4 :)
"I'm just a player, you are the show" as said hughie tomasson, thanks so much SL for this, you guys (and girls) really rock ! ...
Glad that you now love it as well. Those structures seem everlasting. SL did
a serious job here. You will remember that WipEout HD ZONE didn't made it
through the epilepsy test, initially. But instead of thinking about how to put
more effects into the ZONE mode post-HD, SL went into another (new) direction.
They essentially integrated some smoother equalizers for the Pure4 tracks and
have focused on those sourrounding structures which do not produce any issues
with resprect to the epilepsy test and which do deliver a so delightful experience.
What impresses me the most is that the wohle thing is art, its not something
simply coming out of an equation, all the structures and their arrangement need
a very creative mind to put them into perspective. Thx again, Rita. http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/m-love6.gif
@tileon: We have to make a Zone Battle Cup. :)
I didn't played ZONE the last week coz I injured my hand a bit due to playing
Online and Speed Lap the last two weeks straight. xD But I thought I could at
least practise something I wanted to do before, i.e. finding the right amount
of counter-airbraking through the first corner combination on Syncopia at high
speeds. On my third run I found the right balance I was looking for. Here are
two beautiful pictures I took from my session;

But the thing is that these two pictures were taken in a zone where no man was
gone before. http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/drinkers.gif Sorry (http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9231/wohdfz150ps1.jpg), Wotan (http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/7255/wohdfz150ps3.jpg)! http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/m-grin01.gif

The video is mine in fact ;)
I use ds3 with pad and motion control with settings at 100% (pitch only).

Hi hi , well done PBs . Where is the limit on this track ??? :dizzy
I love this game :g

@leungbok: The video is actually not (anymore) the one, one could find under
the given link. It was TDR and now it's TJ. Anyways. So you are using the pad
to do the BRs. Hmmm.... okey. Is there a top3-racer using the stick?
@Wotan: Didn't wanted to set a 150, did only about 100 perfect zones and such.
You were so close. But in the end, 150 is just a number. And I didn't felt the
same like I was feeling the day I reached zone 100 on AP back in the days.
Zone 150 is obviously not the limit. It's difficult to say just yet what the
limit will be coz we're just some laps into Syncopia when compared to, for
example, AP. Sure, we profit from past ZONE experience, but I don't have the
feeling that I've maximized out anything just yet on Syncopia. I think, I can
do a 160 / 130. So I would say, a possible limit might be 170 / 140. Doing 120
perfect zones straight should also be possile somehow, did already 100 perfect
zones straight, which isn't too difficult. But anyways, a 160 would already be
a very very tough result. One has to imagine that you will race for about half
an hour! And the thing with ZONE is that one needs to be at his/her best at the
end. But that's why we are here, aren't we? :) So let's blow the hell out of
Syncopia!
Just one thing, Wotan. I'm glad that you go with me up there! It makes the
whole thing much more enjoyable. And I'm sure Kingheim will follow suit, like
he always did back on HD.

LOL nice! :lol
PS and Wotan you have inspired me to change back to stick control. I don`t think I can play zone properly with dpad. I will never get near these insane runs but zone needs to be smooth and smooth needs to be stick. You guys are legends in zone, it`s entertaining to watch this thread, keep it up!! :)

Just out of interest. Has anyone produced a list of zones and the speed of the craft at those zones.
Eg. Zone 10: 650kph, Zone 20: 700kph etc?
I'd be interested to know if its linear or starts to converge the higher you go?
Obviously once you get to zone 120+ you'd be reluctant to crash on purpose and see what speed you were on, but maybe someone would like to :P

wow ! gg wotan and ProblemSolver !!!!
ProblemSolver, your pictures are awesome ! That narrow view with a damaged craft really rock :)
@Reezy : that's an interesting topic, it would be nice to be able to catch top speeds at different zones, it would requires a topic of its own, and then with gnuplot we would be able to draw the curve and estimate the speeds at a given zone :)
