:rock:guitar:hyperwipeoutHD "WEAPONS ON" World Cup!:hyper:guitar:rock
Thats right! Finally after lots of debating, multiple drafts, difference of opinion, overly complicated rules, plus aaaaalllllll the other stuff, we finally have it ready - Its the wipeout world cup! (Thought it would be good to announce it along with wipeout FURY :)
Cheers to SaturnReturn, Mad-Ice + others for finally getting things rolling. (and EPSILON for the awesome idea!)
[ THE RULES ]
---------------------------------
* 10 teams compete on PHANTOM to see who really is the best of the best.
* EVERY MATCH IS WEAPONS ON, ALL 16 TRACKS
* points are scored in exactly the same manner as the normal wipeoutHD tournament structure.
* Every team is always involved right until the end - All 10 places are decided so the finalist's will only play 1 game more than the rest.
* Try to have at least one standby player ready in case of long term disconnection.
* Games should be invite only
* Teams should agree on host in advance, can split hosting if both agree.
* Coordinate via the PS3 chat box. Set up a chatbox before the race and all join.
* The highest socring pilot for each race will be awardrd the "Most Valuable Pilot" for that race :)
* Keep track of ALL players scores --- either via a screenahot / photo at the end, or use the chatbox to keep track.
* If there are many complaints in the chatbox of dead weapons pads or frequent broken barrel rolls during the first 8 races, change host for the 2nd set of races.
* TIMESCALE -- Each team will have ONE MONTH to play all the teams in their group IN ANY ORDER YOU PLEASE before we move onto the next round :) We were going to do 1 race a week, but leaving you guys to organise 4 matches within 31 days should be easy enough!
TRY AND ORGANISE RACES NOW, OR IN THE NEAR FUTURE :) Ill mark next to each race the date itll be taking place if you guys know in advance.
* DISCONNECTIONS -- If it happens within the first few races, obviously feel free to start again. If its 2 races from the end and 1 team has a clear winning advantage, dont bother. If it becomes a REAL problem, try another team mate or re-arranging it for another day. Forfeits are of course an absolute last resort.
Just use a bit of common sense if something starts to go wrong. Not every race is going to go 100% according to plan, just try not to go mental about it :)
* QUESTIONS -- PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, post them here
http://wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5747
Leave this thread for results and hilarious banter :)

Shame my friend. You could try joining another team? Austria have only 4 pilots.
Granted your a good few miles away from Austria! :) and it is entirely up to them anyway, not me.
As I said in the other thread, we need an even-number of teams for this to work. So either 2 more teams need in, or try banding together a load of misfits and i'll make room.
The more the merrier i say :)

If they do when September rolls around, sure why not :)

All 16 tracks each time.
We were going to include various other game modes (doubles matches, emilinator etc) but its best to stick with tried and trusted first, and made another tourny later if people enjoy themselves :)

Nuff said. We cant include the new tracks if not all players can race on them.

Another reason for not including the new tracks is that some people have mastered them on Pulse or Pure or whatever , while others (like myself) will be experiencing them for the first time. Sure, by the time the World Cup rolls around, most will be pretty comfortable with them, but not to the same degree as those who have mastered them long ago.

22nd July 2009, 07:40 PM
I don't agree, if you think that, then, why not forbid players who have play more than 200 hours at WipEout HD ?
It's the World Cup, with the best players (not all). This guys and girls seem to often play.
I don't tell that for Team France, because only 3 of our players have really played on PSP.
DividedXZero
22nd July 2009, 07:40 PM
i have pulse and pure...
but the tracks didnt feel the same in HD...
so it's not a direct translation to the same skill.
leungbok
22nd July 2009, 07:44 PM
Handling on hd is totally different than in pulse or pure. I had a long training to be comfortable with HD tracks, even if i already knew the paths. I'm sure it's the case for other pilots. And also, sometimes it's better to discover a track than to try to race it like it was possible on an other platform.

I don't like your comparison...a bit extreme IMO. As you said, the World Cup is comprised of the best players, period. The best players of WOHD, not Pure or Pulse, which is where these new tracks came from. But the best WOHD players out there don't all know the new WOHD tracks from Pure or Pulse yet, as they are NEW (to WOHD), hence a potentially unfair advantage (IMO) this early on. If the WOrld Cup weren't for 6 months from now, then no problem, but that's not the case. OBH already offered one reason why incorporating the new tracks might not be a good idea and I was simply offering another.
@ Leungbok - I hear what you're saying, yes, the handling/feel might be different in WOHD, but the most critical aspect of "learning" the tracks is memorizing their layout, of which will take longer for those of us who have never seen these tracks before.
DividedXZero
22nd July 2009, 08:26 PM
WO HD tracks are derived from pulse and pure...
Much like the Fury tracks. And as we know they are not that lengthy that we can simply memorize left turn, sharp u right, etc. in a small amount of time.
Finding the best racing lines and barrel rolls takes time and practice. Which you cannot simply apply from experience from the psp versions. The physics are not the same, you have invisible solid barriers on pulse to keep you from going off track as opposed to ship reset.
I dealt with that when i did moa therma rev...was not the same.
Then i tried knowing what i learned in HD to try that on the psp...didnt work out that way.
But this is my opinion based on my experience.

LOUDandPROUD
22nd July 2009, 10:01 PM
@ DividedXZero - Yah, I know the "old" WOHD tracks came from Pure and Pulse too, but we've all (the top pilots and most of us here on WOZ) had ample time to acclimate to them already, unlike with these "new" tracks.
This isn't a big deal to me at all really lol. I just thought it was another point to make in regards to whether or not to incorporate the new tracks. If we use them, we use them, it's all good. :)
SaturnReturn
22nd July 2009, 11:10 PM
I would suggest that if people want to see a WipEout HD World Cup, as per the image and underlined acronym the following post, then they forget about Fury for this tournament at least.
http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showpost.php?p=110379&postcount=1
Avalon races were ruled out for a couple of reasons. Both the most important (yes yes IMO) and the most used reasons for ruling out Avalon races are directly applicable to inclusion of Fury, even if it were deemed a part of HD.
Finally, the current format is as such largely for the sake of speed and simplicity. The only thing that should change now is anything that needs to be adjusted in the rules to make things run more smoothly.
All my opinions, but I think we all want this to happen and should accept it, look ahead, and learn from any mistakes next time, so that the next World Cup is even more of a success.
OBH
23rd July 2009, 01:47 PM
thank you sat :)
to help clarify -
why no "weapons off" races? -
everyone has their favourite tracks and race types. keeping it simple and use just 1 keeps organising it more...... simple. the idea was also first mentioned 6 months ago, about time we did it! :)
why no FURY tracks? -
simply because i dont know if all those taking part will have bought FURY yet. some teams have only 4 players, its unfair to assume they'll all have it, and if not, wouldnt be able to take part.
theres always next time! :)

If you want to carry out the matches before the start of September then I think that is fine. Please inform myself and OBH once matches are arranged.
If teams have a Captain and Vice-Captain, or generally a person in the team who is best to contact then please make them known here to aid organisation.

I've created some score sheets for the World Cup that people can use to keep track of their scores.
Attached is a zip folder (EDIT: Re-uploaded with fixed small sheet). In this folder is an Excel Workbook, within which are two sheets. There is a large score-sheet and a small score-sheet. The large score sheet can be printed out onto an A4 page and you can use it to write down your own score, and if you have time you can fill in all other scores too.
The smaller sheet is linked to the large sheet and will (fingers crossed) automatically fill itself out. You can then copy and paste the cells into paint. If you only copy the extents of the filled in cells then the sheet that is generated should be within the limits of the forum's rules for images so it can be posted directly into a thread.
An pdf example of the large score sheet can be found here:
Large Score Sheet Example (http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B5vUkOSdapg3OTI4NmUyYjQtZmE0OS00ZWI4L Tk2ZGQtYjgyODMxYTAwNzg4&hl=en)
The smaller sheet that is generated should look like this:
EDIT: See Team England vs. Team Nordic Results Here (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showpost.php?p=146021&postcount=101)
Alternatively you can just fill in the smaller sheet by hand - whatever you find easiest. If you find the font hard to read, then feel free to change it. The font can be downloaded here (http://nathancaldecott.deviantart.com/art/Wipeout-HD-Fury-Font-131384790).
The captains of the two teams should fill out their team's scores and check that they all add up. Then they should liaise with the other team's captain to generate one small score-sheet and post it here. If someone has video or photos of the whole match then they can fill the sheet out themselves, but please double check all scores when you do so.
I hope these are useful to some of you. Whatever method you choose, whether you use these sheets or not, please make sure you all note down your own score and as many of your own team's scores (followed by the other team's scores) as possible in the time between races.
Thanks to leungbok for the icons and Nathan Caldecot (http://nathancaldecott.deviantart.com/) for the fonts (used under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/).)

So, finally the world cup can be a true sucess! I'm thinking if during a race, the pilots that are the reserves of a team, can compete with the reserves of the other teams... For example during the race Italy vs France, can exist also Italy 2 vs France 2? Sure, this is not going to be official, is not valid for the world cup, and the pilots are always ready to quit the race for the official race, but I think this can be funny :D

Saturn and I have been discussing about the difficulties getting 8 pilots from 2 teams together for a match. Especially because there will be a lot of racing going on coming months.
We suggest: 3 pilots per team or even 2 pilots per national team for a race is allowed. As long as there is an equal number of pilots per national team present. We do not need a full grid to determine the best team of the world. It will be a lot easier to organise for everyone.
3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. So no more adding up all points from the 16 races for the total overall score.
We can still have the total overall points as stats though!
Okay, what do you all think about this?
kaori
4th September 2009, 11:55 AM
I agree, it's a good idea for little teams like Italy or Austria. But I think too a big team can win a match with 3 players vs 4 players...
Mad-Ice

4th September 2009, 03:56 PM
i didnt realise teams would only be competing with less than 4 players in a single race .
in all honesty i prefer a running total, but clearly we'll have to change the scoring system if this is the case, or a running total would be hugely unfair.
ShawnFrecle
4th September 2009, 07:25 PM
Well, could be, but I think a minimum of 3 pilots per team is better. I don't think race 2 vs 2 is properly for a world cup with national teams. But for now, I think the formula is quiet good, unfortunately (and obviously) there are some pilots that can't race everyday, but doesn't matter, this is not a world cup, this is the world cup :D ... So, maybe a team must challenge in 4 days 4 races, one after the after, but doesn't matter, this is the competition of the strongest and fastest pilots around, so... You want it? Good, take the time for it! And I speak by our little team, we are 5-6 pilots available and of course if someone is missing, we can't race... Doesn't matter, we must race another day, maybe one race after the other, but again, this is THE wipeout world cup :D
SaturnReturn
4th September 2009, 07:40 PM
Another element to the suggestion was that we take the month to try to organise and complete the 4v4 matches, and then at the end of the month have a "clean-up" period where everyone has to have their matches, whether they are only 3v3 or 2v2. This is a kind of plan B that could work. I still think this World Cup is really a first crack at the tournament from which to learn lessons for future tournaments. So it's probably the best time to experiment with an alternate plan if needed.
In terms of the points system - to be honest I'm not a huge fan of the current system where the total racing points decide the winner of the group because potentially Team A could win more matches than Team B and still lose on points. Doesn't seem right.
kaori
4th September 2009, 09:14 PM
Good idea Saturn, it's better.
I explain : tomorrow, 3 of our best players won't be able to race against North America. It will be unfair if I ask to our 7th & 8th player no play, because I will believe we have more chance to win with 3vs3 tournament !
OBH
4th September 2009, 09:20 PM
massively unlikely youd win more and not go through, but whatever you guys want.
3 points for a win it is.
Vartazian
4th September 2009, 10:21 PM
Absolutely under no circumstances should 2v2 be allowed.
A Punishment should be instituted for the team that needs to get 3 players for WWC. I dont see Soccer leagues cattering to teams with less members.
Im undecided on the new point system. it has equal pros and cons.
SaturnReturn
4th September 2009, 10:46 PM
Vartazian - isn't that a bit harsh? It's easy to say that when you have enough players yourself, but your own team has players from USA, Canada and El Salvador. Team Nordic isn't one nation, the Dutchmen have Connavar from Belgium. But some teams still couldn't get a full squad of 8.
Without the smaller teams there wouldn't be much of a competition. Without certain nations with affiliations joining forces and taking on players from elsewhere etc, the world cup would probably virtually be France vs. England.
Real life professional tournaments are different. This is a game played over the internet and people have real lives at the same time. We have to try and find some way to make this work. As I said, we can learn lessons from it and next time round we can do it differently, perhaps amalgamating teams with fewer players as a requirement or something.
I kind of agree that 2v2 is probably a little too far though. 3v3 should be fine. But I don't really want to start 'punishing' teams considering that this is a fairly loose and relaxed competition in general. There just aren't rigorous enough rules and procedures in place for that. Maybe in the future as the event develops there will be, but we're not at that point yet.
Vartazian
4th September 2009, 11:01 PM
Indeed I was merley stating my views on the way that WWC was being maintained. Last time I checked the requirement was a team of 8 racers to sign up. these teams that sign up with less players are therefore punished if Their lack of avaiable players is their downfall.
I have no problem with Team unisons. TFD Started it, NAWTy Followed and other teams are still picking up people that arent even from their zone. I dont have a problem with that if thats hwat they need for numbers.
But the fact that the first requirement was "Teams of 8" sign up. Then I dont see why a Punishment is unfair for breaking the first rule of sign up.
Its just my POV. I know people wont agree with me. But thats just the way I see things.

Very much agree on the "new" point-system (3p for a victory - 1p for a draw). I must admit, I thought that was the case from the start ..... (I need glasses).
If two teams are equal after the group-matches, we can take a look at a the total amount of points to decide, who´ll be the better placed team.
(Very easy for me to say, I know, after Team Nordic was battered in their first match by some islanders ... :g)

Update: I spread the word and got feedback. There won't be a German team this year - I tried to organize one in February but I had to quit due to some long term and time consuming project ... . Today, w/ competition already started, most of those German phantom racers I contacted want to do it right. Means - practice, learn the tracks and train team-tournys to kick-ass in 2010.
Now for the imminent problem: I'm prepared to help - Infinity_1, too. As a stand-in or proxy to the Austrian (or any other) team that needs help. Catch is, that I'm only able to participate on a short notice. Say 24h before the event happens and only in the evening (GMT+1) on workdays - weekends may be different.
Plz feel free to PM me/us or open a new thread for stand-in pilots and I'll see if it will fit my schedule.

Final Standings for NORTH AMERICA vs THE FLYING DUTCHMEN
Victor - North America
After a Grueling 16 track circut, Mines, Cannon and Rockets Ahoy. North America Emerged Victorius over the European Pirates. Saturns Icaras definately made a nice explosion when shot! The Races were close down until the very last point. Every point was fought for meter by bloody meter. Nobody slacked and Everyone had an absolute allstar performance. Lux was an Absolute speed demon on the tracks, FrostE had some great Quakes , Vart (which happens to mean speed by the way ;)) Was a Rocket Maniac and Yeldar was just straight up... Fast. Excellent racing all of you.

Great races, about the points there must be some mistake about mine,
I had 4+14 points = 18 for the 2nd tourney, and 28 for the 1st one,
so a total of 46 instead of 40, why is the sum incorrect?
Vartazian
13th September 2009, 08:57 PM
you didnt have 18 points in the end you had 12 + 4 = 16 ill fix that
Connavar
13th September 2009, 09:01 PM
I did 2 points on the last race, finishing 6th and I clearly remember seeing "14"

sure.
Not that it matters, but let's make things right :)

Connavar
13th September 2009, 09:06 PM
Unfortunately I didnt take a picture but I swear that I had 14 points at the end,
and i'm 100% sure because I remember:
- I had 12 points after on uber rev, finished last.
- I finished #6
- I saw myself having 14 points on the rankings
- I saw myself being 1 point under Saturn on the rankings
Also, I+Deep shared the 4th place on Vineta, this was confirmed by myself
and TarotCardKiller.
(I don't know the scores of other racers, but I paid attention to my own...)
Now I think the total is correct, and maybe you swapped some positions
among dutchmen. Maybe we should ask everyone to give their final score.

Sorry its not my intent to Mess up the scores (DRAT THEY ARE ON TO ME) The whole haveing like 7 seconds to write them down coupled with THe fact that the scores are messed up from the whole Ven K incident. Ill re-add everything now that another person says 14 let me re add these scores.
Double checking my math here.... I have a new score. TFD 233, NA 237.

SaturnReturn
13th September 2009, 09:15 PM
I got 228 vs. 237. I'm pretty sure 'North' America wins.
The total of that is 464+1 for the extra point due to the draw. That all adds up. Well done guys. Was too close!
Connavar
13th September 2009, 09:18 PM
Yeah that seems correct, 9 points difference, and on the last race:
NA scored 8+6+5+4 = 23 points,
while we scored 3+2+1 = 6 points,
losing 17 points in the process, so basically we were +8 before SOL 2R,
and then -9 after it, hahaha.

You're right Connavar. We were both in first and second place on Sol2 as well until that quake came. Never mind. We put up a good fight. We can kick ourselves today, but tomorrow we shall pick ourselves up and prepare ourselves for Italy next weekend. Then we move onto Team France. A little bit of practice and more concentration (from me at least on reverse tracks) and we can have our day against the French.

Everyone getting 3 points is the equivalent to everyone get 0 points, the difference is exactly the same :P. Team Austria has yet to race so if they do drop it out it won't make much of a difference to the 3 remaining teams. It's a shame for them to have to drop out, a dark horse in the competition I would have thought.

they have played no games and got 0 points, and total race points dont go towards a grand point tally so your not missing out on that either.
SaturnReturn
18th September 2009, 06:39 PM
Vartazian seems to have been thinking that the points teams have at the end of the group phase would carry over to the knockout phase, somehow, to determine the ultimate winner as the team with most points.
This doesn't happen Vartazian, as it's a straight knockout tournament after the first round - so if you lose, you lost. It works the same as the football World Cup. You know football right? It's the sport where you get from one end of the pitch to the other and score goals by kicking a ball with your foot. :P

Team Austria HQ exploded in an inferno of naked cheerleaders, and rightfully so - the teams priorities quickly changed!! :D I like to think yeldar executed a well thought out sabotage mission :)
ENG 321 NORDIC 143 was the biggest win so far (and the opening match no less)
NMA 237 TFD 233 was the closest game!
bumface.... err.... djKyoto sorry! (:g) has a massive 3 MVPs, no other player has more than one!
SaturnReturn with a massive 9 wins in a single event.
Though i did not see it, FrostE appears to have been the most deadly shot on the track so far.
ANZ came up with the biggest upset so far beating those mighty fast Japs! (lets hope scotland dont top it by beating England!)

I can guarantee you that While I race from here on in TCK is a target. He Clearly Backstabbed me.
Cannons, Missiles, Bombs, Rockets. I saw what he did, im not forgetting either.
Im not happy. Im considering dropping from the team because of this.

Now now, you're spose to be a team. Can't you's just get along? :D
You're doing so well atm.
As for AUNZ vs Scotland, it has been postponed due to lack of players on the scots side, will be played this weekend. Leaving everything to the last moment are we? :P

Mind games dj, mind games...them scots are crafty :P
@NAWT:
I'm pretty sure you guys are all on the same team so it seems (ever so) counter-intuitive to gun for each other.
I'm not going to take sides (we Dutch are chilled folks) but I'm pretty sure TCK wouldn't deliberately sabotage his own teammates' races. As a matter of fact he often risks his own race in order to help out the team (and those on the receiving end AKA me won't thank him for it).
See here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCXxfZQIP6A&feature=related) as the dastardly TCK thwarts the gallant and charming yeldar, thereby ending his hopes to win teH race.
That said I know sometimes people hit their own teammates during matches. I remember more than one International match where my own team eliminated me more than our opponents did. It happens.
