Yeah I had the same problems with my router when I first got it. Portforward.com is really helpful and easy to understand :)

If you DMZ the PS3 there is no more need for port forwarding.

Try this (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showpost.php?p=108193&postcount=4) again.

I had to port forward my router because it denied access to a few different programs including the PS3 and utorrent. All you need is a port for PSN..which I've linked here, specific to your router type. It should work perfectly.

Hope this helps. If you need any more advice feel free to ask :)

Isn't Universal Plug & Play supposed to allow devices and programs to open and close ports as they require, inside the network? That's at least what I've come to understand.
Basically, if you have UPnP enabled and working correctly, you shouldn't have to use any port forwarding, DMZ or other workarounds to have correct NAT traversal.
Try to look over your router's manual and settings again, see if you can get UPnP operational. Sometimes, a router won't apply new settings until it's been restarted, while other times it will apply the settings itself.
If you're feeling daring, you could try to update the firmware on the device and see if it makes it a bit more reliable. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know exactly what you're doing, as it can make your router not work anymore.

So, concisely. Try to enable UPnP again, and your problems should go away.
Here's the product page for your router. It should help you find the information you need. http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/BEFSR41

Best of luck!

that upnp seems to be important, i found the enable option in the router config and after i enabled it my ps3 went immediately nat2, but somehow yesterday upnp was "unavailable" again and my ps3 went nat3 again. The strange thing is nobody touched the ps3 or router settings! and still it changed.

My router is cursed!:twisted
by the way thanks for all the help everyone!

Power cycle the router?
Try a wired connection to the router instead of wireless?
Update the router's firmware?

Could just be flaky of course

What's your ISP? The only thing I can suggest is to try and get a new router.

And so i did. What have i learned from this experience? Stay away from the linksys befsr41 v4 router!!! its cursed. My new netgear router just gave me nat 2 with only a little help from a computer repair guy. While he couldnt get the linksys to give me nat 2

crazy stuff :P I have a linksys wrt54g v4 and it has been one of the most reliable wireless routers I've ever used. Perfect for not only PS3 but also my PSP and DS :D

At least you know it wasn't anything you were doing wrong :P sometimes peace of mind about your own competence is just as good as getting stuff working in the first place lol
