Big thanks to everyone involved. Especially JJPAP for suggesting it to me; R3BU5ER for standing in for Yeldar2097; and machiasu for being standby for the Nordics. Without guys who are patient and willing to be standby things like this can sometimes be difficult to arrange and pull-off successfully. Apologies to FrenkyV, we'll get you in a game with the Dutchmen soon my friend.
Finally a massive well done to Team Nordic. Looking at detailed results will show anyone how close it was and what an awesome comeback took place.
We will meet again - and next time the Dutch will have their revenge!!! :D
THE FLYING DUTCHMEN vs. TEAM NORDIC
SUNDAY THE 22nd OF FEBRUARY 2009 - 18.30 GMT
The Flying Dutchmen:
SaturnReturn - Luxoflux (aka jaller65, add both as friends) - AnErare - FrenkyV - (Reserve/Stand-by: R3BU5ER)
Team Nordic:
Soccermums - Golgofier - Zoth-Ommog - JJPAP - (Reserve/Stand-by: machiasu)
Be sure to be on each others PSN-friendlist.
1st Round:
Hosted by SaturnReturn. 8 tracks Forward. Phantom. Weapons On.
2nd Round:
Hosted by Soccermums. 8 tracks Reverse. Phantom. Weapons On.
RULES:
1. All races will be single races (to eliminate the risk of major network errors during a long tournament).
2. If a wiper disconnects during a race: Just too bad (nothing we can really do about it). We´ll try to "pick" him up for the next race, of course.
3. You´re only allowed to use the same ship during the 16 races.
4. Skin doesn´t matter, choose whatever you like.
5. The points of all wipers count.
Please make a note of your placement in all the 16 races - in case something happens to the video recordings done by JJPAP and SaturnReturn.
LET´S HAVE FUN!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To all members of either Team Nordic and the Flying Dutchmen social groups:
JJPAP has suggested a friendly matchup between our two 'teams'. This will obviously be just for fun (and also bragging rights for anyone who is that way inclined). I don't think anyone has selected a World Cup team yet but I guess if you intend to participate in the WC then this could be a good test/warmup.
I've never arranged anything like this before but I would suggest that all those interested should declare their interest in this thread so that all can see it. In addition, please state your availability over the next 3 weekends (Feb 14th-15th, Feb 21st-22nd, Feb28th-March1st). Then we can see if there are enough players who are available on any one day.
EDIT:
Preliminary time and date set for Sunday 22nd February 2009, 1830-2030 hrs GMT
16 Races - All tracks forward and reverse once - Weapons on
Please all let us know if you can make this time or not.
Players interested so far (confirmed for 22nd Feb in green, unconfirmed in red):
The Flying Dutchmen
SaturnReturn---Yeldar 2097---AnErare---Luxoflux
Mad-Ice
Team Nordic
JJPAP---Zoth-Ommog---chaos80---machiasu---mic-dk900---Soccermums
Criz-87
I'll start - I'm available any weekend but currently not 21st (Mad-Ice, what's happening with that?)
If there are too many participants for one game then we can split into two.
I hope we can pull this off without too much difficulty :)
EDIT:
My thinking for this was WipEout HD only, but if you have a psp and pure and/or pulse then state your interest in a PSP game too. That can act as a first step for someone to arrange a PSP match if there is sufficient interest.

Oh, I am definitely ready for Team Nordic, if Captain JJPAP can't fill the roster with decent pilots :P
The next two weekends are good for me, not sure about the 28/2-1/3 yet. Generally late afternoon, early evening works best, but I can make time if it goes down!

Apologies for not specifying. I believe the plan was to have the match on HD. I do have pure myself but don't really play it and have no idea how to play online. I think more players have HD than pure/pulse. I'll try to arrange a HD match-up first and once it's sorted we can look at a psp match too if there's interest. I've edited the first post to encourage people to express interest in pure/pulse too.
EDIT: supersocks - are you a Team Nordic pilot for PSP games or HD too? shall I add you to the list in the first post for HD?

Hi there.
It´ll suit me the best if it´s after 19.00 (GMT) - kids have to be asleep or at least be relatively quiet.
All days.
To Supersocks: If you´re from Scandinavia, don´t forget to check out the the Team Nordic user-created group. A lot of things going on at the moment.

I can see, that the team is already full, but will be happy to be reserve for this one (don't want us to default this one to those pesky dutchgirls)
JJPAP
15th February 2009, 04:36 PM
For Soccermums:
No, no, the team is not "full".
It just the wipers from Holland and Team Nordic showing interest and the ones who would like to participate, when we find out a date and time.
We need as many as possible (that´s why I made a notice at the Team Nordic Headquarter, as well) - and we sure need you.
So prepare to join the army.

Well maybe the first time is possible if the team can come together as we first agreed on the 21th on saturday afternoon at 13:00 hours. I still hope we can come together for this first race of The Flying Dutchmen.

I can assure you sir I have no idea what you are talking about ;)
Mad-Ice, sorry to hear that. But yes, hopefully a good few of us can race on the 21st. It should be fun. Even without you we should still have a full team for the 22nd - and a pretty good team at that.
JJPAP - At the moment we don't have enough dutch players to race all Team Nordic. If we are still only four by the weekend how do you want to play it? Player rotation? I'll let you sort it out from your side if it comes to that. Cheers.

For SaturnReturn:
There´ll be 4 Team Nordic-wipers.
Members of Team Nordic are having a qualification-match thursday night. Friday I´ll let you know, who´s participating for Team Nordic.
So it´ll be "Full House": 4 Team Nordic-wipers vs. 4 Team "The Flying Dutchmen"-wipers.
So I think 2 8-races tournaments (1 Forward/1 Reverse) would be apropiate.
Or maybe 2 12-races tournaments (both tournaments a mixture of forward and reverse tracks).
Phantom. Weapons On.
Let the war begin :lol.

I'm not really in the mood for trash talking right now as I'm far too happy after kicking chaos80's arse in tournament just now.
Also:
FrenkyV - Currently we have a full dutch team but you're welcome to join if we get enough before the weekend for a second pool. Currently I don't feel we have enough players to have dutch qualifying for this match as it would leave 1 person left out. I know I sure wouldn't want to be that person and I wouldn't want any of the others already confirmed to be that person either.
I hope you can race in the Saturday dutch meet and join The Flying Dutchmen group too, as Mad-Ice says, you're very welcome.
JJPAP - I'm thinking maybe host single races. With all the network issues recently I worry that tournaments can easily be ruined if a player loses connection for a moment.

Good idea!
So how many races and which kind of races, do you think would be apropriate to have a fair end-result?

It doesn't matter who is hosting. WOHD is server based and it would be my guess that there is only one server cluster in EU.
SaturnReturn
18th February 2009, 12:25 AM
Ideally I would do it 2 races each as I'm sure being host gives you an advantage, but that would be a lot of effort. So as it's a team game half each seems fair, to suit the superstitious among us.
Soccermom
18th February 2009, 12:49 AM
I am fine with catering to your superstition :lol
However, consider the example of joining a CS, TF2, quake, etc server as an admin - it doesn't give you any ping advantage. Same principle here (provided WOHD is server hosted). Your ping time will be dependent on your distance and routing to the server.

I think all of them is the only option. Half hosted by the Dutch and half by your lot.
All right.
The Flying Dutchmen hosts: The 8 tracks Forward
Team Nordic hosts: The 8 tracks Reverse
Phantom. Weapons On.
I´ll let you know, who´ll be the Team Nordic-host, when qualification-races are over (friday).
I´ll suggest that the wipers, who are going to race, will be on each others PSN-friendlist to minimalize "outsiders" interrupting the start-up of the first race.
All set.
Only 1 problem to solve: How are we gonna keep track of the points for each of the 16 races?
yeldar2097
18th February 2009, 02:41 PM
we could delegate one person on each team to count the points just to make sure it's all fair. yesnomaybe?
JJPAP
18th February 2009, 03:40 PM
I wouldn´t like being the one taking notes - in 6-10 seconds - after all 16 races :blarg

I would do just that, if I'd ever played any other game online before HD. But I haven't, so I can't. I feel there's a difference. If I perceive it, it's real.
JJPAP - If every player just makes a note of their own score then that should be adequate. They can also make a shorthand note of the player above them and below them in case anyone forgets. They can post them here and we'll add them up at the end. If someone takes video or a photo of the screen at the end of each race then that should be good for verification in case anyone makes a mistake in the rush.
I may not be recording this as it's a bit of a distraction. The camera basically has to sit between me and the TV. I probably will in the end though, just in case anything really crazy happens.

20th February 2009, 06:29 PM
Luxoflux - That's cool. I hope you can get on with a different account.
JJPAP - Thanks. The dutch team is still as listed on the first page on green.
I probably won't choose my ship until right at the last minute though. It could be Feisar, AGS or Goteki. Whatever it is I'll stick with it for the whole thing. Should we impose that as a rule? I think we should as it would be the case in a tournament game.
JJPAP
20th February 2009, 11:00 PM
Yeah, you choose one ship and use it in all the races. Good idea.
What I meant with skins: One team uses silver skin and the other uses a color that differs as much as possible from the silver skin.
I wouldn´t like serving Golgofier a missile because I thought he was Jaller65 (aka Luxoflux :lol).
Tomorrow I´ll make a draft, you can put on top of this thread.
NB: I´ll record the battle on video from my humble Feisar.
SaturnReturn
20th February 2009, 11:54 PM
To be honest I don't like silver skins. I'm colourblind (please no stupid questions or comments - I get enough of them in the real world) and for some reason the silver skins just confuse my defective brain. I have tags turned on anyway so I always know who is who.
Unfortunately it seems Yeldar got all excited about half term, probably drank one Grolsch too many and confused Sunday with Saturday. So he's unavailable. Best laid plans eh?
Anyway, FrenkyV, are you still available? If not, I'll have to find someone else. Let's just hope I don't have to resort to recruiting a Belgian :p

Just to clarify - Team Nordic vs. The Flying Dutchmen is arranged for Sunday 22nd, as per the first post in the thread. Yeldar can't cancel so we'll need another player. I think FrenkyV is the only other player who is available. If he's not then I will contact TheMuse and DjManiac.
Mad-Ice has also been trying to arrange a match for just the Flying Dutchmen to play against each other on Saturday 21st at 1300 amsterdam time I believe, which is something separate to this thread but is mentioned here a couple of times. This is because we were trying to arrange them both not to clash etc.

OMFG!!! That was so freakin' awesome. BEST WIPEOUT GAME EVAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!!!!
As you can tell, I liked it quite a lot. Scores on the way.
Highlight for me was when the dutch were in 1,2,3,4 on metropia and AnErare in 1st place dropped mines on all of us. Classic!
AnErare
22nd February 2009, 07:37 PM
Yes, well, the actual reasoning behind that was if you three were set back, the Nordics would surely be unable to get back at me ;PP And it worked! :dizzy
Wicked action all through, we should do this more often. Hoist them sails! :pirate

HAHA, worst reasoning I ever heard. But it cracked me up so I'll let you off.

No because you guys would probably form a barrier against them :g It was a long shot! But thanks for letting me off, don't expect this kind of thinking to repeat itself though ;)

As a little teaser, results from the FORWARD TRACKS only are...
The Flying Dutchmen..........128
Team Nordic.....................104
Can the Nordics make up the difference in the second half. Tune in for my next post to find out.
It's pretty tense for me right now. From what I saw in the second half Nordic could come out on top. I know my results were definitely not as good on the reverse tracks. I made some shocking mistakes, as you will see later in the videos. Back soon.

Great tournament, with lots of tight situations and quality racing! my hands were shaking afterwards because of adrenaline rush :) cool huh! it was quite hard to tell who you're about to pound around, i killed soccermums in the last corner of Uber Mall fwd ooops..:paperbag

LOL Zoth :P
After a while the tags seemed to have vanished so I wasn't even able to tell who all those feisars and ag-sys were :P
Golgofier
22nd February 2009, 08:03 PM
That was some super-sweet races!
Think I've had my dose of adrenalin for this month :D
Although, I was really mad with myself at a couple of occasions were I made some pretty horrible mistakes, flying of the track in places I didn't even think it was possible to :P
Anyway, thanks all!
AnErare
22nd February 2009, 08:07 PM
Ghehehe, have had that myself on AP fwd once, not tonight though luckily ;)
It happened after the first corner, was taking it way to tight and happened way too fast to correct at that time... I hit the inside wall, nose scooped up and jammed against one of the poles and sent me hopping off the track! :lol

22nd February 2009, 08:09 PM
RESULTS ARE IN:
Team Nordic.....................237
The Flying Dutchmen..........227
WINNERS : TEAM NORDIC
Well done guys, that's an impressive comeback. I'm off to kick myself now for all the mistakes I made in the second half.
Thanks to everyone for taking part and making this a success. I will post a full set of results soon, as well as videos when I get the chance. For now I have to go eat - so hungry.

Thanks Saturn for going through the results. And thanks to everyone participating. It is really a lot different to do team racing. I attempted to brake to let Zoth pass on metropia in order to drop a bomb on the Girls... that went horribly wrong :P
DICKS vs. GIRLS: 1 - 0 :lol

You have let us float for a moment! LOL
Both teams did great, if you keep in mind that it was first time for both teams to race as a team, and points could not be anymore closer than that :)
So once again thank you to everyone, for making this happen!
Let there be many more!
Soccermom
22nd February 2009, 08:24 PM
Absolutely not, I think, we match each other really well. And having been raised in a feminist environment, it pains me a little that the dicks prevailed ... haha
Also, the whole team aspect made it so much fun.
Next weekend?

I made some shocking mistakes, as you will see later in the videos. Back soon.
I´ll bet (my yellow Feisar) I made a mistake - well several, but one I´ll never forget on Sebenco Climb - bigger than all of yours together! You will see. You´ll all see :paperbag.
Got all 16 races captured seen from a nordic perspective.
Will upload as soon as possible, maybe tomorrow.
We´re definately going to do this again, but right now I think most of Team Nordic have their mouths filled handling the enthusiastic media from all over Scandinavia.
I can imagine the frontpages tomorrow: Team Nordic still unbeaten! Even all the soccermums will raise their eyebrows.
Thanks to all of you. See you soon.

JJPAP - Whatever it is I made a stupid error on Sebenco and also made multiple errors on Vineta K reverse, e.g. falling down the hole in the track....twice! We shall see. This is shaping up to be The Flying Dutchmen vs. Team Nordic part II - who will win the award for most epic fail? Even more tension!
R3BU5ER
22nd February 2009, 09:14 PM
Awesome race there guys! :D Lots of blasts and annihilations on those tracks!
I ****ed up some races by being stupid...not watching my shield..etc. The nerves also creeped up to me I have to say, very ecxiting.
Thanks all and I'm surely in for a rematch :twisted

Great effort Saturn, nice result table.
Golgofier and R3BU5ER, don't you worry, i'm very sure everyone messed up out there.. like i did in chengou reverse where i'm usually have nice races, i fell off the track and so on and ended up 6th. Although i have to defend myself a little bit here, because my wife had an idea to start vacuumcleaning our living room! i was like "what the hell woman!? is it REALLY necessary to do that right now??" well you can guess the answer: "YES it is, lift your feet!" ARRRGH at that point i missed the shortcut and fell off the track. O'well..

I've uploaded the entire first half uncut. It's not great quality, it's a large file and might take a while to load. Let me know if it's prohibitevely slow. If anyone knows a program I can use to cut it into individual races then forward me a link and I'll do that.
EDIT:
Video Link Removed - Will have something better up soon.

Loaded just fine.
A bit muddy, but you can see names and results, so fine.
Working on my videos (takes time!) - Think it´ll end up being 5-10 minutes of highlights and lowlights from the match.
Been using Adobe Premiere - They have a free trial on their homepage.

Warning! This is just an experiment!
I´ve tried to mix the video, SaturnReturn and I did last sunday, to get a view from different perspectives.
Personally I think it´s too confusing, but at least it´s a bit different from other WO HD-videos.
Here we go: Vineta K (http://www.wegame.com/watch/Team_Nordic_vs_The_Flying_Dutchmen_22_02_09_01_Vin eta_K/)
To those of you feeling a little disoriented and/or disappointed: I cooked up something much better this morning - The Splitscreen Video Magic.
Already did Vineta K, and I think it works out fine. I´ll have the time to upload it tonight.
