This question would be applicable to any game. How does one record a video of playing a game? And I don't mean taking a video camera pointing it at the TV, I mean capturing the same video that is going to the television.

There are things you can buy that you connect onto the video and audio cables and will connect to your computer with a usb cable. the output can then be recorded and saved on your computer.

my friend uses dazzle with his 360, but there are many other products out there that can achieve the result you're looking for.

Thanks! Actually I just found that out shortly after posting.

But I'm kind of broke right now so buying a Dazzle will have to wait.

The dazzle only lets you do composite/s-video though, which means you'll have to play in SD. I'd rather play on 720p HD and do it like this guy (though wired).

Video resolution will be about the same, but it has a much higher quality and you don't offend your HD TV ;)

And if you're really into it you'll get one of those blackmagic intensity pro cards, a high end pc with terrabytes of disk space to waste and record at the full 720p glory.

Also, don't upload those videos to YouTube since it tends to butcher you video, especially with lots of quick stuff. I prefer Vimeo, which has a 500MB limit per week (unless you pay for pro and get 2GB), but allows for much much better quality.

meh, now you've got me drooling again, anyone have a spare intensity? ;)

Edit: meh (http://vimeo.com/blog:140), forgot about the no more gaming vids on vimeo thing, I wonder what quality gamevee offers...

"Late reply - the PS3, using svideo, is plugged into a tv tuner on my computer. I use virtualdub to capture the video - audio comes in through the line in - I have an RCA to 3.5mm stereo plug. I sacrifice framerate and resolution for the sake of recording however - svideo only goes at 25 (or 29.97, depending where you live) fps I think and at SD only."

Thats what insertcoin does to record his videos ;) Ask him, he might be able to give you some more info

If you have a DVD recorder:

Hook up the X to DVD recorder using TV display cables.
Insert a blank DVD-R/RW disc into DVD recorder.
Insert game into X.
Find game screen on DVD recorder.
Record as you normally would.
Finalise disc when finished.
Insert disc into computer.
Rip using preferred software.
You may want to convert to a more efficient format, do this at your discretion.

guess its a little bit of a pipe dream but would be nice if there was way for ps3 o/s to stream video into an .avi direct to hdd.

i imagine though bit of a performance hit writing such large volumes of data to hdd. will have to look at the dvd recorder option, they must be cheap as chips these days :)

Well, I'm not sure how much they are, but you're better off with a top - model to make a good recording.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I didn't consider that I would have to play in SD before :p could effect my performance.
