Yeah yeldar, first time I saw this was in a race with asayyeah. Each lap I saw him coming from nowhere, I couldn't understand...

When I discovered that a simple acceleration pad was enough to fly above a gap, I was quite proud of myself lol

Don't know if it's so useful in races though...

Whoa,that turbo boost over the bridge on the banked turn on C/project forward was a close call, nearly running into the right hand side of the tunnel wall.
That would of stopped you dead in your tracks if missed and you hit that.

As soon as I saw you holding back that turbo on the last lap of reverse,it was,here comes the short cut,but with a well executed BR thrown in for good measure.

That way, you can see "how" to perform an action on the controller while watching the video; you may get something else out of it, I do not know.

I haven't seen this done yet on wipeout and wanted to see if there was any interest out there in watching these kinds of videos. I have a couple of raw videos but dont' want to spend my time editing them if no one thinks they'd be interesting/helpful. (I think the idea is cool)

One is w/ the feisar on SCR and the other is the triakis on chenghou project reverse. The SCR one has an excessive amount of BRs (sometimes you can't help but to lrl); you surely don't need to do all that to get a good time if you have a good line. Unfortunately all I get with Wegame is a very high quality slideshow so it`s hard to watch videos on it :( Living in the countryside my internet connection is very agricultural and the data is brought to me from the nearest telephone exchange by donkeys. I used to be very anti YouTube because of the obvious quality issues, but its practicality still makes it a good choice for a lot of people with less than lightspeed connections, I think.

Great lessons in TT techniques from Leungbok and DD77, thanks! If we are doing requests or if you are short of ideas, could you please show me how to get a sub 22.5 on Sebenco Fwd. I can do all 96 barrel rolls on this track ;) but am stuck for the best place to turbo and a solid method to significantly reduce my time :dizzy

Sebenco Climb Phantom Speed lap chasing my 22.71 ghost.

yeah all credit to you for inspiring me to use annotations. i guess i should have put in the full lap with no pauses in afterwards but i forgot. it was far too late and i wasn't really thihnking properly. i might do that today though

basically what i do is i do a lap that i think is quite fast then i just play around with it, seeing how to do each section fastest (using a turbo to get ahead if necessary)
for example: when doing my moa therma reverse lap (still top 10 i hope), i set my record on the 99th lap and throughout the whole session i only went for 3 fast laps.
my philosophy is: if the ghost get's ahead at ANY point, ditch the lap

i know exactly what you mean kgb. until connavar's site came into being i used to give up after 15 laps or so.
i decided to set myself a goal (giving kingheim the jump on overall-phantom rankings ;)) and i found that all of a sudden i had much more patience for it.

setting yourself a goal with that website is good advice to anyone wanting to find the patience to get good laps (unless you're a budding alien in which case you'll do it in 3 laps :P)

with regards the sebenco lap (and any other i do): do you guys think it owuld be a good idea if i take the annoteted version on youtube and then try to film each section of the lap separately (because i can't seem to get in all right in one lap ;))?
what i mean is, actually showing the fastest way to do each section. yes/no/maybe??

Your advice on how to attack that first left-hander alone has worked wonders for me...it's clearly the quickest way around that corner. Just raced you for a bit online too...good times. As you could see by my finishes against some great pilots, I'm getting better. Aside from lots of practice, of course, my improved racing is also the result of my realization that the ship I'm most competitive with on Phantom is Feisar! :o Mirage weeps... :(

There's another technic for the boost/br, you can fly over the archs instead of below (Pirahpac's discovery, astonishing, no ? :D).

If you fly over the arches wouldn't it actually be slower,you miss speed pads + the fact that you have "Coming down" time.

Same situation on Moa Therma forward.
If you nose up and boost at the flatland flyer point and use the airbrakes at the end of your flight you can land on the speed pads just after the first corner.
Problem is it's actually slower due to the "Air time",I've tried it.

You're right for moa, mate (and it works in almost every case), it's better to fly low than high to be faster. But for metropia reverse, i thought too that the speedpads and a low boost/br were faster, but it seems that the line is more straight if you passes over the archs (and kingheim and Pirahpac are doing this method and are far in front of me) so it must be the exception.

Getting the capture card/and drivers moved from one computer to a faster one has been problematic,but sorted a few hours ago.

I wouldn't call it a glitch, more like "the way it's supposed to be".

JJPAP - It happens on all tracks in a session. We created a new session at the time and it still happened every race. In the chatbox at the time, those in the other game session were also experiencing the same thing. Crazy, huh!

I fear the boost-select-boost trick has somewhat ruined speed lap. It still takes skill to pull of and all, but I don't like that it's the same one discovery and the same skill that can be used on so many tracks. Thanks for sharing though leungbok, at least everyone can see it, which makes it fair.

I don't think the boost-select-boost can be used (advantageously) on every tracks. And on the few tracks where it's possible you have to find the correct manner and the exact place to use it. It's a new feature of wohd as the barrel rolls were a new feature on psp's wipeouts. It'll change nothing on the ranking hierarchy on the long term. I don't see what's the problem with this option, we can put the game further and find new strategies on speedlaps. It's a way of discovering the game with a new sight, just before the future dlc are released ;)

It generally involves boosting twice before the line, after pressing select in between, to get extra speed from the boosts and the barrel roll after getting enough air. I just feel it's that bit too far. Barrel rolls change one wipeout game compared to the last. This is a feature introduced by the patch which, as with the online game, alters the way HD speed lapping works (not in all cases, but a fair few over time I suspect). As I say, it does take some skill, it isn't possible on all track, and I'm sure you're right leungbok, it will be slightly different on each track you use depending on the topology of that track before the line. But it's essentially still the same trick.

The way you pull off the rest of the anulpha reverse lap with those barrel rolls on the turns is, in my opinion, far more impressive and skillful than the boost-select trick. At the end of the day, all those who are competing at the top end of speed lap will probably learn these tricks form the videos you kindly post on youtube, and therefore can go and use them and improve their own times. In the end, the rankings will probably end up just as they were before. However, in my view, that's another reason why it would have been better off without this new feature, as those of use who want to keep our ranking up are obliged to go through the whole process again, with no real value at the end of it.

Oh no mate, trust me the 5 other br are peanuts, just try the select-boost on anulpha you'll have difficulties to press select on time and to get enough air for an extra br (without this br the select-boost is useless) ;)

Wow! You're right. I've managed to do that double barrel roll on the right hander a couple of times, but not the boost-select. I wouldn't call the BRs peanuts though, they're still pretty tough :D

The boost-select does make SL different now though, and it still means that a lot of people will have to redo laps which were previously clost to perfect, or as close as they could get. I'd still prefer it without this as I see it more as an exploit of the patch and don't think it represents a faster way around the track. It's not something anyone can apply to online races.

I guess it has it's good and bad points. I suppose for those who are really interested in SL it keep it fresh and exciting. So I concede on this one. It hasn't "ruined" SL. I was wrong.

basso you boost earlier than you would normally (right before the line on most tracks) so that you grab some air, then you press select to get another boost (because you can do that if you botch a lap) and you boost again while in mid-air. this allows you to get a BR on top of the boost that you would usually get going into a fast lap

it's a bit hard because there is a time before you can press select again after the turbo. if you press too early, you don't have the turbo.

The game is made to be played as you want, online you can play with or without br/pilot assist/weapons, and speedlaps are made to be raced the fastest as possible. If people don't like the find like shortcuts, new br, select-boosts, they can create an unofficial league with strict rules. We are not exploiting a glitch based on luck, the select option is OFFICIAL, like using a single boost just before passing the starting line, it's a tip, nothing else (ok, it need practice to be mastered, and what ?). Why don't people just try to learn those new tricks instead of blaming that for "killing the game". :frown:
My personal view on that : I try to compete with the top pilots, when some of them find a new way of going faster, i MUST learn it !! If i don't, i can find an other way of going faster, i can also give up (no dishonour on that) for many reasons, too hard for my skills, not enough time to learn those new difficulties because of work, family ..., but if i can't perform a new find it's only BECAUSE of me (except for a real cheat, off course) !!
And Lunar, mate, the boost-select-option as ALL to do with driving/racing/flying your ship, it's not sufficient to press select to improve your time, you have to boost at the exact place, with a precise line, to nose up at the right moment, to press select at the exact moment without loosing your line, and after all that, you must manage to br, maybe that's not driving/racing or flying, but then you'll have to explain me that, because i don't see !

And what killed the game for me ! Not being able to play online with my main account, the ghosts that disapeared from my save folder (like my last anulpha reverse speedlap phantom :evil), those problem are not MEAN TO EXIST in a great game like wohd !!

Oh, and a last thing : it works perfectly on venom class, even with a piranha, but it's not fair, what a pity !! ;)

lunar is just trying to explain that this has not been taken into account when programming the select option, this is not the way it was thought. ti was just to make each lap a attempt, because you had to save the turbo from previous lap.
that's why he calls it an exploit. i think SL just imagined it as players would press select only once.

of course, the thing was to obtain the best time, and select-turbo-select helps.
but now those records are on the ladder, they must leave it, to make things fair.

I tried it on Anulpha Reverse at Phantom speed. It was, as leungbok said, very difficult. I didn't even get close and if I hadn't seen a video I would have said it was impossible. If it's anything like as difficult at Venom speed on Anulpha then it really won't make Zico any easier whatsoever.

I still see it as an exploit too but when I consider how hard it is in this case and also that I don't have to keep redoing laps to get the boost back (to use at the start of the next one), I think now that perhaps the exploit is a fair trade for the new feature.

The fact that you can hit select more than once in a lap does now make me wonder if this kind of thing was actually expected/encouraged when it was implimented. Or maybe it's just so we can get around the track as quickly as possible on void laps. Who knows?

Had a couple of goes at it and just couldn't get my fingers set up correctly to pull it off.

Do those that use it use the stick or the D-pad ??

In theory would it be easier to do at venom speed than phantom as you get more "reaction" time ??

I'll stick to Zone me thinks, L1, R1 and D-pad. Just about right amount of buttons for my age !!

I use the d-pad and motion control (only for pitch, in that case it helps a lot ;))
I do it consistently on anulpha forward at phantom speed (a little bit harder on the reverse), and for the venom speed i managed to do a good time using it, but i didn't practice that much at this speed to really decide if it's easier at this speed (not sure anyway ! theorically you need speed to nose up sufficiently for having enough height to br).

While I do like the looks of the boost-select trick, I don't think this is what the programmers were trying to achieve.

You boost in the previous lap, cancel the lap with select, and then re-use the boost by boosting the turbo again in the next lap. Obviously the boost itself isn't canceled and you can recycle it in the lap though you just cancled it!

That tells me this was not what it was meant to be used for and is thus not a feature but actually a bug, which you guys of course exploit to this insane extent ;)

Don't get me wrong I appreciate the effort but I do think it should be reworked and changed into something more plausible...

edit: I also think this trick needs it's own thread somewhere, I don't see any, because I think only a few elite pilots know about it and that just seems wrong to me..

Leungbok, I understand your point. I tried to compete in the SL tables with you guys, for 9 months now. This competition is clearly outstanding. Every time I checked new vids, I was so hyped by the fantastic new tricks & br you guys found. I enjoy soo much trying to reproduce badly all these stuffs (dreaming to deploy them online ah ah). So first, HUGE thanks for sharing. Thanks to you guys, we have a clear view regarding sl/tt rankings. Now, I must admit I agreed with Lunar on my first reading. Cos' if Zico Liu had leaded some beta testing before 1.30 release, I'm sure they would have locked the s-b-s "opportunity". I understand this stuff can't be named "exploit" lol, cos' I tried a little on vineta & anulpha, and LOL OMG you guyz are definitely aliens robots ah ah. As it had been said before, I loved SL cos' it was my kind of "lab" before online races. I can't describe this feeling when you're performing online moa shortcut or OMG, the vineta's one. So good. So, if I fully agree on the fact s-b-s just put SL on a new -even crazier than before- no limit level, I just regret the fact that finally, people (alien dudes) will move to this opportunity instead of perfecting to death their old racing lines. I mean vineta, ubermal, anulpha for example, I'll personally continue to improve my old racing lines for a while -cos I'm a retarded ewok LOL-, at least 'til june 12/13/14, cos' this opportunity is useless online. And I'm enjoying so much hunting the ghosts I grabbed on El website. But as you said to me lol, this flyin' high dream is such beautiful that I'll probably try that soon. there is a misunderstand there. and i'm not in the competition for Speed Lap, so i couldn't know how you would react to what i said.
and i don't know how hard this trick is, so i admit i spoke a bit to fast.

anyway, you shouldn't care about glitched times, if you know what times are glitched then good players would know your time is a good one, no matter the # you are.

That's what i would making understood, this option is not a miraculous "only press select and you'll gain one second !".
I think the misunderstanding comes because people who wants to improve their TT/SL times are already trying to master some difficult shortcuts or new br, and now a new trick (only advantageous on few tracks atm) is coming, and all this hard work must be repeated ! But maybe when that will be mastered too, it'll be considered as more fair ! ;)
For the glitch time, i find that annoying but i don't really care on my rankings on single race, and i'm certain the pilots with those impossible times didn't make that voluntarily. And it's easy to recognize a glitch time, the pilots hited 0 speedpad, and this is a real performance on a complete race :lol
Don't care, i accept that people don't agree with my opinion, but i prefer when everyone has experimented things before debating ! ;)

@kanar, who tells you that zico liu had been able to succeed in the boost-select-boost, mate ? He's ranked at least 948, 2 seconds behind Connavar :D But...wait !!! Zico Connavar... :eek...you give me an awfull doubt ! ;)
And don't care, at the end, lines will always rules (between guys mastering all the other bs, lol).
And for your attempts at speedlaps, i was only able to equalise your anulpha time using that "lethal weapon", lol ! You really deserved your ranking on the top 10 sl phantom. And i'm sure of improvements soon ! ;)

There were so many unique videos that showed the relevant BR's that I wanted to use.
The problem was that they varied considerably in both format and quality,also some are shot at an angle using a camcorder.
I could sort those problems out on the most part,it wasn't looking too bad.

Where the project came undone
Although a lot of the videos were shot in a decent form of HD,a lot of the videos have capture banding running across the screen,which I tried to remove.
I use SONY VEGAS pro 8

Firstly by taking in individual histogram measurements of the banding.

Then plotting those varying values and creating a mask that would equalize the banding out so that it matched the unbanded portions of the video.

Then I had to get that mask to move both in width,luminance value and differing vertical sync for each video that had the problem as the banding moved up or down the video.

Even though I only needed a small portion of each video,and the results were quite good considering,the files became a mess and my computer just couldn't keep up with the processing load.
Mainly because of a stupid VEGAS update that slowed everything down to tortuously slow.:brickwall

I really need a PC with one of those Intel Core i7 920 2.66Hz processors to do this project justice [they are more powerful than a PC with Dual Quad-core Xeon X5355 processors].
This processor does away with the FSB which makes processing video & music,for which it was designed at least 50 times faster than my current PC.

It's not an expensive chip US$250,it's just that I would have to get a new M/B, RAM etc as well,which funds don't allow ATM.:(

Yeah well 16 tracks and nearly 100 BR/short cut's [do they ever cease to increase?] to do was always going to take time.
And if I'm going to do it,trust me it will be done well.

I tried hooking my PS3 directly to the PC to "REDO" some of the BR points, thus savings me the band filtering problems of the offending videos,[there are roughly 30- 40% that suffer this problem to some extent or another atm].

Two problems occurred,the first is that I use cockpit mode,which would of thrown the whole series of BR's out of kilter,and I want this project to be a seamless one [all others "Posted- Available" are in near mode].

Secondly I could only capture in 4:3 SVHS,which SUCKS and would take some serious video manipulation to get looking like all others.

That WILL be sorted with the PC upgrade & video capture card upgrade [waiting for a USB3/HDMI 1.4 capable Matrox card that should be out soon according to the emails SONY Pro division have sent me, big $$ but worth it IMHO ]
