View Full Version : HD preview build hands-on

Just had a spin on the preview build of wipEout HD, thought I'd share the experience with you (without spoilers, of course).

First off, it's BLISS (but you knew that already).
Steering with the analog nub needed a bit getting used to (and after 3 hours I still didn't quite manage the hairpin at Chenghou), but it definitely works, and precise.
The pressure sensitive R2/L2 is great for sophisticated airbraking, however the double tap for sideshift is quite hard to pull off consistently.
Steering with the sixaxis works, technically, but is useless at high speeds (read: anything above flash), but sixaxis for pitch control is bliss.
Zone mode is pure eyecandy, although a bit too easy imo. Zen state is SWEET though.
Photo mode works perfectly, took 3 snapshots for you to ogle at.

That's it for now, will play some more tonight and answer whatever questions I can.
Cheers,

I'm so glad they implemented sixaxis pitch control! What I saw after wipeout 3 was far less focused on pitch, craft tended to hug the track and it took away that extra depth from the originals. Anyway, looks like that's changed now! But can't you steer with the d-pad? I hope there's good music controls (right stick?), too.

Very cool pics :p, the one with the jump is amazing with the blur, and the Qirex shot is just pure sweetness :g

eLhabib
25th March 2008, 12:06 AM
thanks! you can still steer with the d-pad, of course. right analog stick lets you move the camera around a bit (not like you'd have the time to do that mid-race).

One very nice thing I just noticed is that there actually is a tiny drone flying around the track, projecting your ghost onto the track. Very nice ATD!
BRs are still hit and miss, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Can't tell if it's a problem with my thumb, or the way it was on the PSP, a frame issue.
Furthermore, the controls are actually so incredibly precise that the skillcut on Anulpha Pass isn't really a SKILL cut anymore... there's just no way to miss it, unless you are being fired at.
Real shame there are no replays though. I've had so many :eek moments in these few hours with the preview build, I could've taken a TON of awesome images from the replays. But the way it is, the only way to get a good snapshot is to instantly pause the game whenever something cool happens. And that's not an option for multiplayer, of course :(

Skvall
25th March 2008, 10:25 AM
What? They must have replays. That is the only way photomode would actually be used. Like in PGR 4 for example. And there you can upload the replay too.

what is the default use for the extra shoulder buttons? (relative to psp)
is it possible to separate sideshift and airbrakes onto the 1 & 2 shoulder buttons respectively?

Sausehuhn

And is a BR still caused by left-right-left/right-left-right?

eLhabib

haven't tried reassigning the shoulder buttons. by default R1 is rear view, L1 I don't remember. I'll check it out tonight.
BR is still stickwiggling, yes.

Urgh. That BR-Combo is a shame of want to correct your racing line in mid-air.

1)Is it faster than pulse? meaning speed, not framerate

2)Does it control more like pulse or pure?

3)How is the acceleration after weapon hits

eLhabib
25th March 2008, 03:15 PM
1) I really can't tell. It all feels so different on a big 1080p screen, but Phantom definitely feels at least as fast as in Pulse (from a 'lack-of-control'-standpoint ;))

2) I'd say Pulse, but again, whole different thing than on the PSP. Definitely a good bit floaty though.

3) Rather terrible, unfortunately. I guess this wasn't completely balanced out in the preview, but a single mine can cost you BIG time at the moment. Hit 3 mines and it's first to last :?

mdhay
25th March 2008, 03:22 PM
And I guess hitting three bombs eliminates you and sends you into Vector Speed(backwards)?

eLhabib

haven't managed to hit a bomb yet (instinct and jedi reflexes always get in the way ;))

Am I the only one who thinks that weapons take too much damage and give to much energy back?
At least in Pulse. But I guess it's the same with HD.

what is this 'zen state' you mentioned??? is it a mode??? can't help but wonder if a thread I started awhile back on the 'zen of WipEout' had any influence on this...if it is a mode...cause that would be just wicked...:)

I'm more concerned bout the sixaxis...how does it feel??? intuitive??? CAN you set it to steering or is it only primarily for pitch control...

Rapier Racer

Zen is a speed class you can only reach in Zone mode.

eLhabib
26th March 2008, 01:56 AM
I wasn't gonna spoil that, but yes, that's correct.
Sixaxis steering is utter CRAP, just tried it with every possible sensitivity setting, it just doesn't work (at least for me it doesn't).
Sixaxis pitch control is quite ok I guess, but the analog nub does it better.
The Sixaxis IS however implemented in a very nice way at another point of the game, nothing special, but a nice touch. Won't spoil it though.
Someone asked about button configurations and music control, so I checked that out today. You can reassign every button individually, which is nice. I set my airbrakes to R1/L1 because I just can't sideshift with the springy R2/L2 buttons. In the standard config, R1 is the rear view and L1 is voice chat (for online play). I wonder why you have to press a button for that, but I guess it keeps down the bandwith. There is NO music control while racing, all you can do is pause the game and change your music there. Custom playlists work nicely, by the way.
Furthermore, I managed to hit a bomb today, and it's not as bad as I expected. does slow you down a lot, but nowhere near anything ridiculous like in Pure, where it could actually send you flying backwards.
If any of you have any more specific questions (or screenshot requests ;)), tell me asap, tommorrow is my last chance to play the preview, so I'll try to answer your requests.

Thanks for the impressions! Very cool to hear about.

BRs are still hit and miss, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Can't tell if it's a problem with my thumb, or the way it was on the PSP, a frame issue.

That's disappointing-- hopefully this is fixed in the final version.

We all sort of work around the BR problems in Pure and in Pulse-- and I can understand the framerate factor affecting BR on the lesser-powered PSP hardware-- but on the PS3, I really hope that BRs are consistently "read" by the game.

Wow, nice screenshots...lovin' the Qirex one! :)

SIXAXIS for pitch control sounds great! I know in W3O I occasionally find it tough to control the nose and make that turn with the D-pad (yea, I'm a D-pad type of guy. o_o lol). Focusing on steering with that and moving the controller for pitch would be ideal, IMO.

:D

You have to hold a button down for voice chat because you don't want to hear everything that everyone says. At least, I don't.

I don't think it's for hearing the others, it's for speaking.

Lion
27th March 2008, 04:36 AM

Skvall
27th March 2008, 10:01 AM
The headset that comes with the Xbox 360 have a mute button on the cord(that goes to the controller, not the 360). Very good indeed. I wish Sony also sent a headset with the Ps3, so more people had one online, and with a mute button.

This is much better than having a button on the controller to activate voicechat, thats annoying.

Rapier Racer
27th March 2008, 11:24 AM
Thank god such a system for voice chat is in place I remember way back last year on the 360 i was playing Full Auto and there was this dickwad(s) constantly making annoying noises throughout the entire race.

At least theres a little compromise here in that you might have less control of your ship if your constantly holding a button other than X down, then X plus chat button plus square to fire the cannon. Ats a lot of buttons.

Sausehuhn
27th March 2008, 04:08 PM
Well, I can't imagine you have to press it the whole time, just once and it saves your setting till you press it again.

Just thought I'd give you my first few impressions as well, as I took a break from my holiday week after my collegues told me the preview code had arrived. :-)

I did have my reservations about HD - considered it a cheap Pulse rip-off for the most part. (Sounds worse than I felt about it, but still...) So... it IS a Pulse rip-off ;-), but a great one at that! The steering is a LOT more sensitive (not TOO much, though), sixaxis can be used for pitching or steering the ship or not be used at all, there are Grid Mode and Racebox and of course some of the Pulse and Pure tracks. Phantom is still fast, though it's certainly not faster than it is in Pulse. Anyway, most was said before. But what blew me away is Zone. Imagine the tracks all covered in (partially flashing) neon lights - which looks awesome to begin with! Then, when you reach higher zones, not only does the colour of the entire track change again and again, but even textures. I really dig neon style stuff, and I got totally addicted by this one! To me, this is probably the best WipEout has ever looked. The flashy design even brings back memories of 2097 - only it's much better. Sheer awesomeness. ;) For the first time in my life I seriously considered getting an HD TV (played the game at work). It seems I'll have a PS3 that runs preview code for the weekend and should probably start counting the hours... ;-)

That's it for the moment. I just had to share the excitement, sorry. *g*

Ben

EDIT: Sixaxis can be used for pitching, not for tilting. Sorry that. ;)

eLhabib
27th March 2008, 05:54 PM
Well try the sixaxis steering (works best at 20% sensitivity imo) and tell me if you can get a decent raceline with it. I sure as hell can't.
Oh and while Phantom may not be faster than in Pulse (although I think it might be), it certainly feels more intimidating with the big screen. I'll have to compare laptimes for Moa Therma to see if it's actually faster.

eLhabib

Concerning the speed of Phantom class:
I just had a shot at wipEout HD speed lap phantom on moa therma with Piranha, did 4 sessions = 28 laps. best I managed to shake out was a 00.23.91 - I'm sure the ace players here could shave at least 2 seconds off that time, so we are at ca. 22 seconds, which is pretty much equals to the current records in Pulse. Judging from that, the speed is pretty much the same as in Pulse (since the track hasn't changed). That's the most educated guess I can give you ;)

Tehe, I will, but not before tomorrow night. Then again, I don't hold my hopes up for Sixaxis as I detest the ever so tiny lag that stands between an input and the console recognizing it. Same for the Wii remote. I sure as hell hope these are NOT the future of gaming.

In some of the preview shots, there was a bar which said '0%' next to the speedometer in the bottom right where the shield meter would usually be. Since the shield meter is now at the top, is there any function for it?

Mano
28th March 2008, 07:20 AM
I agree with G´kyl observations about gaming sensor technology at this time, the only thing i have found its great for is for head tracking in simulator games, where the lag isnt so bothersome, but the controls for the sim itself have to be wired, i have been trying Lock-On flaming cliffs, and head tracking is great (i did the cheap webcam headtracking thing) moving the perspective according to the position of your head adds for great immersion, and its perfect for keeping the bandits on sight and locked; so, for that kind of thing its great.

i tried the wii remote and nunchuk from a friend, first 20 mins its fun, but as you get more time and want to try different things, the lag is very uncomfortable, and lets not even talk about precision.

That percentage shows how hard you are pressing down the accelerator (x-button is analog now, y'know).

I hope they change the health display to some sort of energy bar again.
Because it's hard to read small numbers on top of the screen whereas an energy bar gives you a short impression of how much energy is left even without reading numbers.
In Pure/Pulse you always see the energy bar, even if you're not focussing on it. And you always see if you have around 3/4, 1/2 or 1/4 of energy. It doesn't have to be very exactly to show you that you've to absorb some weapon.
In HD you would have to look up every time because the small number is not in your angle, thus you lose focus to the actual race.

G'Kyl
29th March 2008, 01:35 PM
Damn it, I just did a reload and so lost what I had already written. Anyway, I planned on keeping this short in the first place, so... ;) Just wanted to give you some more impressiones after I finished what's in the preview (which is no more than two Grids, no online play and just four tracks). I did quite a few Zone runs (did I mention it looks awesome? *g*), unlocked the three available AG skins, took some pictures (you can now tilt the camera, move it freely around the ship and "strafe" a small bit into every direction) and had a couple of Phantom races.

Well, I didn't do a direct comparison yet, but Phantom actually feels somewhat slower than in Pulse. May have several reasons, one being much more tight controls, but it just didn't strike me as difficult as it still does in Pulse. Also, I reached higher zones than I usually reach on PSP.

The control scheme... it sacrifices some of the former floaty feel for more accesibility, meaning it doesn't feel like you have to work against as much inertia as you would expect. Instead, ships turn almost instantly - at least compared to former WOs. Don't like it - but it's not broken. ;) In terms of how far craft get up into the air and how quickly they fall back to the ground, I think that's hardly changed since Pulse, so that's a good thing.

What's kind of cool ist that you can set the sensitivity for acceleration as well as airbrakes. Anything else but "most sensitive" doesn't really make sense to me, but still there you are. *g* Sixaxis, though, as Martin's pointed out, is pretty much useless for anything faster than Flash. Inputs simply aren't realized quickly enough for the system to work at high speeds. Then again, pitch control (which can be enabled seperately from Sixaxis steering!) is sort of a neat idea. Even though, I'm afraid many people will be holding their controller tilted forward all the time while racing HD. ;) (Haven't checked though, whether pointing your nose down still gives you slightly more speed.)

The HUD is being discussed elsewhere. I think it's less pretty than any other WO HUD, but what the heck. What I don't like is that Eliminator isn't an offline race mode. Neither is Head-to-Head.

What's absolutely cool is the blurred view you get when going over boost pads, when your shield is down or when you absorb an item. They might have overdone a little, when at Phantom you sometimes don't get a clear picture of what's going on for several seconds, but that may be a Beta version issue. It's not much of a problem if you know the track, but it can be a tiny annoyance.

OK, hope I haven't forgotten anything this time around... What I think is best about HD are the looks of each and every ship and, of course, Zone Mode. To give you an impression of what I mean: Here's some pictures. I really think there will be loads of HD craft stuck on computer desktops when the game's out... :) I think I have fallen in love with the picture that's simply a close-up of the left wing of a Qirex. You can almost touch the metal, and the detail is amazing! Even though on picture it seems far less impressive than in the game.

EDIT: Here's two things I forgot...

1) What's great is how the music gets sort of damped and loses bass while you're airborn. As soon as you hit the ground it's blasting off again - makes for some cool breaks. :)
2) Some of the boost and weapon pads have either been relocated or removed. Nothing major, but you'll notice the difference.

considering the rapid phase-out of the all digital PS controlpad that's not terribly surprising. I don't think I've seen comments from anyone that they prefer the sixaxis to a dualshock for weight and functionality.

You do see one now. ;) To me, rumbling fingertips are among the most useless things I've experienced in the last years of video and computer gaming. Not that I believe anyone agrees with me, but still... :)

eLhabib
2nd April 2008, 11:56 PM
Well, I've always considered the 'sixaxis'-part of the PS3 controller to be the motion sensing, so I guess it won't really die, since the Dualshock 3 also has that. And even if you're not fond of rumble (I certainly am), you still gotta appreciate the added weight. The sixaxis just felt like a cheap piece of trash because it was so very lightweight. If there are sound engineers for closing car door sounds, someone really should've thought of the sixaxis weight issue.

If there are sound engineers for closing car door sounds, someone really should've thought of the sixaxis weight issue.

Precisely my point. I know I can mostly turn off the rumble - but I just LOVE the lightweight feel of that controller! Switching between PS3 and 360 almost feels like going back to an antique gamepad of the video game stone age era. Light is good. :-)
I might add, though, that apart from weight and rumble, I do think Microsoft's current controller to be the best ever made!

Hrmmm, didn't think somebody would actually like the lightweight sixaxis. I think it just feels cheap. And I love rumble. Reason I didn't already buy a PS3 is that I'm still hoping a DualShock3 Bundle hits before wipEout HD does.

I do think Microsoft's current controller to be the best ever made!

Ugh! You have to be joking... April fools was 2 days ago

Well, from a perspective of which controller hurts your hands the least after long hours of intense play, the 360 controller is the best I've seen as well. As much as I love the Dualshock design, I do get sore fingers sometimes.

I have to agree, the XBOX 360 is very good, followed by the Wii (Yeah I know) and then Dual shock.

I really wish they made some comfortable adjusts to the shell of the controller.

seriously guys, where is your problem? (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/04/16/ps3s-sixaxis-wants-to-be-a-360-controller/)

Sore fingers with the DS? Come ooon are you some sort of pussy? I can sit and use it all day, sore fingers???

It's not like it's an issue really, just something I noticed occasionally ;)
And there is one thing that ultimately redeems the DualShock and will forever set it above the Xbox controller - four independent digital directional buttons. Try playing Guilty Gear XX on Xbox and you know what I'm talking about. The Xbox digicross is CRAP.

oh, look, I found the original topic of this thread! It's over there there there there

We do have a separate thread for discussing controllers. Um... somewhere......

G'k wrote "You do see one now. ;) To me, rumbling fingertips are among the most useless things I've experienced in the last years of video and computer gaming. Not that I believe anyone agrees with me, but still... :) "

I do, never liked rumble really, it's distracting for me, but I like the controller heavier as well, so I would prefer the rumble one if you can turn it off. Although, I may need to pick up the weirdest controller out there for the ps3 to be different :) Maybe I will play with a keyboard / mouse

you might be interested in the Splitfish FragFX (http://www.amazon.com/SplitFish-Gameware-PS3-fragfx108w-Playstation-Controller/dp/B000S14FNO)
unfortunately amazon won't ship them straight to NZ, otherwise I'd order one.. first person shooters that don't support keyboard and mouse are one of the ever decreasing number of reasons to keep a gaming PC around.. I am incapable of playing a shooter with a controlpad

WipEout HD looks awesome and I'm buying a PS3 for it. Now Lance, make a time machine so it is May.

My time machine only jumps 11 years from the future back to the present and back again. You should see the previews I'm seeing. WOW!

But back to the present: The previews for HD do look really spectacular, but I just can't justify the purchase of a PS3 now, and possibly never. For me it would be a choice between a PS3 and a new desktop comp, and the desktop would win.

The discussion of the HUD worries me, too. I wonder if I could even stand to play the game.

Why would you need a new computer, Lance? :D

Lance

To handle a harddrive of 80GB or more.

eLhabib
4th April 2008, 06:01 PM
PS3 can do that, too! AND it plays wipEout HD! ;)

edit: on a sidenote, where do you get 80 gig of data from - certainly not from your 56k internets, no?

Lance
4th April 2008, 06:19 PM
I've downloaded far more than that, but already years ago I had to offload stuff onto CD-ROMs, which were such a pain that I would never want to do such a thing again even with BluRay, but my biggest drive that works with the old computers is a 46 GB and that one is failing. I have a Western Digital 80GB, but can't use it with either of my antiques.

But back to the thread subject. :D

I assume you used to have a faster internet connection once? Because 80gig download takes roughly 132 days of straight downloading!
Assuming you only use the internet for downloading about 8 hours a day, that's more than a year of doing nothing but leeching stuff!

Lance

I've been online for eleven years; no such average need be maintained. I've never had anything but dial-up.

I repeat, please get back on topic gentlemen. That's my second request today.

Justifications for a wipEout HD-loaded PS3 purchase:
1) blu-ray just won, so stay sexy with the new discs.
2) More wipers playing wipEout HD will mean Swift412 will get lonely on his PSP and have to buy one.
3) Metal Gear Solid 4.
4) GRADIUS SIX!!!!!!!
5) It's a free online network.
6) Copying me is a sure way to succeed, and I'll have one.
7) You're doing well in life, time to reward yourself!
