Not sure if this is worth a new thread, but this finnish site posted few screenshots taken via photo-mode from pre-release version of HD:

I miss the all-glass underwater tunnel with those beautiful refractions, though.

i hope that isn't the final HUD, it's terrible!
the graphics look insane for this game, but the most exciting image for me was at the top, that stretched out landscape one, THAT looked like wipeout should!

Game is looking awesome :nod
But i'm gonna have to go with the 'wtf have they done to the hud' crew :paperbag
Also, i think the blue bit at the top is the new shield meter?
But if it is, then what is with the percentage at the bottom right of the screen next to the speedo? (it reads 0 by the way). Is this a new game mechanic? :g

Ugh, eww, the HUD, it looks like...something from...*shudder-gag* Fusion.
Don't like the style. And although I love the backgrounds and ships, I just can't seem to like the organic-look track surfaces.

Hey, I liked fusion's hud. But this one has all manner of different colours and reminds me of 80s 90s style things.:cold

holy crap. this last batch of screens looks pretty much like a finished product to me, which is good and bad at the same time. Good because it means we micht get HD sooner than we thought (and the game does look GREAT), and bad because it seems that this really seems to be the final HUD design.
I usually don't say things like this, because usually it does the person it's pointed at wrong but: whoever is responsible for the HUD design - you were the wrong person for the job, sorry. This is simply TERRIBLE. And this is also something that destroys the whole game for me. Its like putting one foul cherry on an otherwise perfect cake. YUCK!

Yes, the HUD is terrible. Not stylish, not WipEout.
Why not take something simple?
But there's one good thing about it: The weapon indicator does not seem to slide in like in Pure and Pulse. That's really important for fast gaming.

Nothing you can't find translated in that 1UP article already (It's by same guy after all). Except they used wip3out soundtrack, Prodigy's Music for the Jilted Generation and Bomfunk MC's Super Electric in their custom playlist. Which was nice. :P
EDIT: Oh gosh he mentions it on the picture text, lol.

Most of y'all have more experience with the Wipeout franchise than me-- but I don't see what is so terrible about the HUD?
The only annoying thing I see is that it isn't pushed back to the corners of the screen-- seems that the HUD items are too close to the center.
I wonder if Wipeout HD will take a cue from games like Metroid Prime and allow the HUD to be adjustable-- it would be cool to have the option of make the HUD items semi translucent, and to control their position on the screen.

I'm still undecided on the main game HUD, I think it's generally OK, but the non-functional elements ( borders etc) are a little too busy.
The zone HUD is excellent, however

'generally OK' just doesn't cut it for a wipEout title, though. The franchise is famous for its style and graphic design. It is beyond me how they could come up with such an uninspired HUD, especially after seeing the bliss that Pulse's HUD is... they should've just made the Pulse HUD in high res - but I guess the same thing happened here that happened in the development of Fusion: 'hey, we got lots more graphical power now, lots more pixels to use, lets make it super-fancy with lots of detail!' - WRONG! A good HUD has to be simple, easy to read, not obscuring the action, dynamic. Fail in all categories here. Hell, to be honest, now that I looked at both, I even liked Fusion's HUD better than this, and I'm certainly not teasing here! Someone f*cked up big time. I sincerely hope this is going to be revised, but I fear it won't be...

i've just made the decision not to buy this, and in doing so not a ps3 until final fantasy xiii now. i love wipeout more than i can express, but the series has gone too far into f-zero territory now. pulse started it and every new screenshot of HD confirms my fears...and i HATE that HUD, it's something that is always there and it is just horrible to look at, it shouldn't be that way. I'm gonna keep my hopes up for the real wipeout ps3 game, and hell i'm sure loads of people will get this and have some good things to say, i'm sure people will say 'give it a go' but i had the same feeling with pulse, played it, dissapointed. poor tracks, shiny stuff everywhere and annoying weapon warnings...as i said i'm a big fan, but need to rant when one of my favourite game series' is letting me down. <end rant.

Big sprites or full-screen effects on PS3 = crippling on the framerate.
If it was 720p / 30fps, you'd be laughing.

The overscan on many TVs will make the HUD look closer to the corners than in the pictures. Guess thats why many rather have the HUD closer to the middle than too far out in the corners.
Not that it will help the design though.

There was engine flare before the new HUD. Proof (http://www.1up.com/media/03/3/7/9/lg/552.jpg?r)
Unless this build with the old PulsE/W'O"3 style HUD was running at a lower detail level (It doesn't really seem like that), why was it taken out?
Egg
22nd April 2008, 08:27 PM
It was a big, fat ugly low-res sprite, and therefore offensive to mine eyes.
Oh, and big sprites are not good for 1080p 60fps performance.
Anyway, fret not about the engine glow - wait till you see what the effects guys (Ste and Richard) have come up with since you last saw the game in action.
omega329
22nd April 2008, 09:00 PM
bit off-topic, but how is HD rendering reflections? are you using environment mapping or raytracing? or some other method I don't have a clue about?

Anyway, fret not about the engine glow - wait till you see what the effects guys (Ste and Richard) have come up with since you last saw the game in action.
So we can expect some kind of engine flare? It would be very cool if you could achieve this, since the exhaust trail looks really hot with all the blue flames, while the engine itself looks cool (temperature wise ;)) because there is practically no effect coming out of it. And therefore it doesn't look very realistic.
Nice to hear that you are still improving the game, a few weeks before release :)
omega329
22nd April 2008, 09:45 PM
Not realistic? If you'd ever stuck your head in the unfiltered exhaust straight from a engine that's "just ticking over", you'd be surprised by how hot it is...

22nd April 2008, 09:54 PM
The screens are looking sweet :D
I don't think they'll be using ray-tracing for reflections omega , real time ray-tracing is still very much in its infancy , they're more likely using environment mapping
omega329
22nd April 2008, 10:08 PM
I thought that, but this is a PS3 were talkin' about :rock
just kidding, I doubt that even a PS3 could do real-time ray tracing, hell my PC takes almost a min for a single frame!

What I meant to say is that little effect comes out of the engine on the screenshots we have seen so far, and it looks like the exhaust trail is there for no apparent reason. It follows the ship, but it not attached to it, a link is missing between the exhaust port of the engine and the trail, and that would be, you guessed it, the flare.

The version I had downloaded earlier is of better quality (20Mbps video vs 9Mbps, and 160kbps audio vs 128kbps). It also doesn't have the "RP" sign at the beginning, and throws you directly into the action. So I'll keep the "old" one, even though its a bigger file.
