As I said - a lot of the Qirex architecture remains. I wanted the skin to look like a group of extremists had hijacked a ship and painted the scheme to reflect their cause.

I waited till earlier today to view this thread, then looked at all the skins in one session, reading everything up to just before the most recent post. The ones that pop into my thoughts as I write this are Max's brown beauty; Amaru's Cedecio in its first form; the Go Teki in original colours with no graphics, ZenDJINN's colourful Go Teki, and his purple, gold-flecked machine; Rob's Soviet Qirex, ''Nadia's'' TIE fighter, and that Qirex in 2097 Retro.

I'm sorry if I didn't put your name to the description of your design. Also there are some others I like that I didn't mention, but I'd have to go back and look again and currently my visual sense is too overloaded and needs a rest.

I've added some flames to the front of the ship and finished the work on the edges of the fins. I also painted a little "!" sign on the back of the craft and put some air vent stripes to the cockpit sides. Still everything done only using the web based editor, no photoshop.

Next thing I want to do is to write my initials (TOM) on one side fin of the ship and WOZ on the other side. I'm wondering what colours to use for these because I'd like to use something else than only gold on this skin. Since I've used only 6 different colours until now, I have enough possibilities left in the colour editor. Any suggestions? :)

I mentioned sometime before Pulse was released that I'd be creating a championship AG-SYS craft, adding in visual form to the Wipeout backstory.

Becoming much more familiar with the editor (along with Photoshop), but here's my work so far. This is my interpretation of the AG-SYS that won the FX300 season. There's a lot of corporate "noise" on the ship to make it look like a weathered racecraft. Don't particularly like the right side of the ship, but I'll end revising the design in some form or another.

Stew, a tip: Where the blue meets the orange, you have painted it just blue|orange. If you paint blue|light blue|darkish brown|light orange|orange, it looks more like two panels next to eachother, like this:

It's the first time I've used the original skin as a basis, which is a decision I made mainly because the Qirex 'wings' are such a pain to find the edges on. Also, thanks to the strange wrapping on the 'seams' along the wings, I accidentally created what I think is quite a nice pattern with the stripey bits on the front.

I've had a change of heart with regards to my custom skin. I had a bright blue/white Pirahna skin going on but it didn't look right.

I've edited the original Pirahna skin for my new one. I like the colours too much to change them! What do you guys think?

Weeeeell, I've got quite far with it now, and I'm actually really pleased with it in a way, in that the flat bitmap looks really ace (I even crumpled up the paper before I scanned it to make it look aged, not that it shows up :frown:), but it just looks quite lame in game. Basically, I think the style is so different from the game's art and the detail is so small and fiddly that it just looks like it shouldn't be there.

I wanted to keep it subtle, but cleaned it up a bit and experimented with swapping the blue and yellow, it didn't look so pretty. The blue I took from a pic of the EU flag, the original turqoisey colour was to dour for me. Oh and obligatory tricolore :nod

Cause I don't fly AG-SYS, it was a challenge I set myself to try something more complicated than the little detail changes on my Feisar. Since the peeps in this thread have been making such awesome skins from scratch (though my AG-SYS is still mostly the original textures).

And actually it's nothing to do with Kel Solaar, (think someone else has already done a retro Qirex haven't they?) it's actually based on the original wipEout renders of the AG Systems craft that you can see in this old thread: http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1484

P.S. you probably can't tell in those shots, but the Feisar actually has WOZS3K running down the nose, even though I haven't posted here in ages I thought I can lose catastrophically online in the name of the zone! :p

im giving up the skin editor. i cant do anything with 16 colors, when something looks perfect in the editor, the sides dont line up ingame, my textures keep getting screwed and ingame the details and cockpit are just solid colors of my skin.

Of course the problem is that her Auricom was a single-hull...perhaps the design would go better on Feisar, EGX or AG-SYS (traitorous I know, lol).

P.S. - That WipEout render is the most gorgeous WO pic I've seen. It's my PSP wallpaper. I drool over it everytime I see it still. I especially love that Daniel Chang is watching John Dekka pass him!

Having the right number of hulls is an issue for remaking the single-hulled old ships.... but I can`t help feeling it would just be wrong to put Arial or Ana`s colours on another team than Auricom. I`m currently doing an Arial Auricom on the Pulse model, even though it would fit better on an Assegai. It`s a challenge and needs quite a bit of re-designing (and more design talent) although I`m learning some useful stuff about Photoshop.

The ship is not totally black. I added different shades of dark greys and midnight blues to give it a little depth. There are a few "bolts" on the wings, a KITT license plate on the rear and the signature red light on the tip of the nose - of course.

CR4SH3D: Trial and improvement, mainly, the texture mapping on the left wing is not quite the same on the 3D preview in the editor as it is in the game for some reason. Because of that I'm still ironing out a few alignment issues in the part where the trails curve up to mke the FX400 logo by downloading it into the game, checking for errors, and then fixing them in the editor. I'm also making a few other changes, like how the trails of the ships on the cab work and join up to one another.

Other than that I've used up all of my ideas on one ship, now, so I'm on the lookout for ideas if anyone has any. Also, thanks to everyone else for the positive feedback ^_^

ive also just had a thought, i remember for quake2 there was an app where you selected what game model you wanted (male/female/cyborg) and it loaded the skin that you could then paint on and see the realtime 3d preview, if someone were to re-render the pulse craft would it be possible to make an offline app for pulse skinning?

I had the same problem:)

- Go to Wipeout-Game.com
- Clone your skin into another slot
- Delete this skin from your memory stick
- Then download it again:)

If u want to be sure just open your saved data on PSP and have a look at your skin If there is ag-sys slot 1 or something like that its gonna be ok:)
I had same problem and my skin worked only on SP but not MP because of that... when i saved my skin on memory stick showed me that it was for Assegai and i was flying with AG-SYS O.o

Speaking of pixelpainting, here's an idea I had a while ago but realised I would have to do it all from scratch so it took me ages to get around to doing it. It's based on 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Wave) by Hokusai. I'd hoped to find a suitable image on the net to paste in, but I'm glad I did it all myself now. Thing is, I can't think what else to put on the ship besides the wave design.

Weapons researcher Scorpion first made a bid to enter the world of AG racing duing the FX300, claiming they had developed a system of enhancing weapon accuracy while staying within AG guidelines. Without the expertise and history in the area, their first prototype was rejected from competition.

Undeterred, Scorpion went in search of a partner who could bring that expertise. Piranha, being no stranger to partnerships and sharing a history of rejected prototypes, seemed the obvious choice. In the early stages of the FX400, the first Piranha-Scorpion was submitted. A sleek dark craft, boasting greater weapons power, was accepted by AG authorites.

At the last minute the Piranha-Scorpion was pulled, the official explanation being simply that Piranha were unhappy with the branding of the craft. Some suspected that the merger would cannibalise Piranha's own success and that the merger was over.

However, to the surprise of the industry doom-mongers, Piranha unvealed the Piranha-Scorpion MkII, boasting sting as well as bite and, importantly, branding in keeping with Piranha tradition.

The firepower potential remains to be seen but some insiders are speculating that, in spite of Scorpion's involvement, the weapons system of the MkII is no different to Piranha's standard FX400 craft.

I love the wave. It's gorgeous pixel art and works really well on the AG. And I love how you're keeping the rest in style - like mah jong pieces. I think the front is pretty much perfect. How about separating off a little of the back and using more of the blue? I don't think you'd need it if it wasn't for the engine parts of the AG but maybe it might help there?

I love it though. It has almost a ceramic feel to it.

I was trying to get a couple of photos of my piranha scorpion last night and only then realised I have fallen victim to a slight difference in the editor display - my ribs on the back are one pixel out down one side. I'll have to fix that.

Aye, you just have to be careful with your choices. I did most of the originals in 10 or 11 colours - out of which I got the main logos and anti-aliasing - and gradually added colours for highlights and dirt. Then, most of the extra things (warning stickers, decals etc) I managed to do with the existing shades, or by adding 1 or 2 more colours.

The 16-colour thing is a PSP memory-cramming thing, by the way.

I posted this one before but it has since been improved and I'm now calling it finished. When I brought it in-game, I found some of the joins were off by a pixel. So I ended up tweaking it, bringing it back into the game for testing, more tweaking and so on. While doing that, I also improved some other areas - such as the back end, which is why I've included it in this pic. Since I was testing it in-game, I also got a few good shots of it which I link to below.

Last night I realised, as much as I liked my Piranha design, I'm rubbish with Piranha so if I'm going to take a craft online it has to be either Qirex or Assegai. So, this morning, I knocked up a quick Assegai. Very simple idea and even simpler execution, this is easily the quickest skin I've done. I'm sure it could be tarted up a bit but I quite like the simplicity of it.

Thanks Zargs. I worked my but out to make it. I have no idea of how PhotoShop works so i had to make it pixel by pixel. Even more the shark head i had to make it twice because it didn't saved the first time.
Nice new look by the way but IMO i think The Green Machine had more personality.
As for may details ...whel that wouldn't go so well whit my previous teams protocols (piranha and eg-r) ;)

The car is actually a very special guest on this skin, being loosely copied from my Morris Minor, part of whose registration is "AAX" (I'm tempted to make an alternate version with it at the front, beating the Qirex :D )

QirexAAX, I love the new colours... but... I think I liked the old colours more! Yeah, they weren't all that Wipeout and look a little cartoony but they really suit the design you have. They're both great though. Now you have the template, you can use any colour combo you like. Actually I discovered my neon one works just as well in red and yellow as well as blue so I could do a whole neon series. Or go for a Superman Red/Blue thing.

the shape of the piranha really lends itself to this... it's fairly fish like in shape, and also more like an aeroplane or boat than any of the other craft...
it would be much harder to make this look right on a triakis. your method sidestepped this issue quite neatly by including the shape of the fish rather than making the ship become the fish :)
for military designs on a triakis I'd be more inclined to base it on a tank than on a plane.

as to a piranha skinned piranha ship... I'd be interested to see the results of someone successfully conveying it, but with the shape of the real fish (http://www.destination360.com/south-america/brazil/piranha.php), maybe the mirage would be a better match?

I always thought the 2097 qirex was just purple and black, I was rather surprised when I took a close look for research purposes and found the blue wave along it's length...

I originally wanted to go for a kind of Steampunk look for this one but it ended up looking a bit more modern.
As far as the iron sufraces go I admit I used a couple of photographed textures for this, but it certainly didn't make it any easier and I still spent ages going over the whole thing making sure the colours were right, that the distribution of the rust was as I wanted it and that all the edges joined up seamlessly. And then, of course there were all the additional details, the rivets, text, furnace vents etc, so I certainly don't feel like I cheated :)

Sorry about all the images, I couldn't decide which ones to use.

What I'm pleased with about this skin is that, as opposed to most of my previous ones, it's not based around a single design which makes them only really look interesting or make sense from the side or front. This one, with the glowing furnace vents and striped airbrakes looks most interesting from the back, so it's more fun to race with.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention. Lion - both of those skins look really ace. If I ever used piranha I would probably use that shark skin or at least shamelessly plagiarise it.

QirexAAX, that is simply stunning. Superb. The amount of work that must have gone into that must be phenomenal. Everything is pixel perfect and the level of detail is baffling. How you got such strong textures and kept it all 16 colours is totally beyond me. I'm blown away. And inspired to try my Silent Hill inspired ship I've been holding off doing because I thought I couldn't do it in the 16 colours. You've shown just about anything is possible.

I think I know what you mean about the delay of its publication. I feel too that something is missing. But I don’t know what. And maybe this is what makes it so beautiful: its mystery, where does it come from, what are FEISAR up to? I’m so glade you didn’t give up on making it. As for how it was created, who cares as long as the results are so good.

Dogg Thang I like the lighting bolt but somehow I think it would look better on a different skin color. On the other hand your light glowing effect becomes better and better.

I need to learn how to dirty the ships up a bit and make them look weathered, like the subtle work Egg did to the original Gotekis. Problem is I erased all that, and it does lack subtlety, though subtlety is not entirely the effect I`m after. I have it in layers on photoshop so could change things easily, suggestions welcome.

Nice work, Lunar! Love what you've done for the logo. Because you're going for a simple yellow and black, you should be able to make great use of the 16 colours to add as much or as little weathering as you'd like. Having a look at Egg's other skins (not just the Goteki which is more about the colour and logo) will probably give you a few ideas.

This may well be no help to you but if you remember my Sunset Goteki (it was just red with a logo and shading), I made my own blank shaded version first based on Egg's skin. I wanted extreme highlighting with the light bits so it's probably a bit much for you (and was an early rough skin) but may give you a starting point. Hope it helps!

Thanks for the advice and the flat skin, Dogg, very much appreciated. I can use the skin and a bit of magic wand to add darker yellows along Egg`s hull patterns, which should work. I`m not sure what effect the weathering should have on the black parts, maybe just some more greyish black, if anything, I`m not sure. The weird thing about this skin is that even though it seems to have very few colours I have to convert it to indexed colour and then back to RGB in photoshop, before pasting the non-layered PSD into the editor, otherwise the editor turns it a sickly green. This may be a good trick for dealing with the 16 colour limit though. I couldn`t think of any other colours that would work with the yellow and black.

Finally, here`s my Assegai, which was a quicker job. My online ship roster for my favourite ships is almost complete, just waiting for Auricom now.

I more or less just plagiarised Egg`s design and changed the colours to something that appealed to me.

I found that I can get some OK weathering effects by dabbing a little black or white on a surface, then using the photoshop smudge tool. it's particularly effective on any leading edges and corners.
I could have fiddled with it more to make them more prominent on the HL2 EG-X (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/hl2egxskinshots.png) but it wasn't a prority for me. the light bits on the blacks came out OK.

It was a work in progress and going okay but the surface area of the Triakis is too small and, in-game, the Triakis has a really shiny surface which doesn't suit this design at all. So, at some point, I'll try this idea with a different ship. Still, it's the beginning of an idea.
