Tried for 4 races and every time it finished the countdown itd seem to just stay on the player list screen so Id quit after a while.
A couple of races with zargz worked but it seems a real hassel to get the races to take. Im going to reset my router to see if that makes a difference but Im highly doubtful, pretty sure its the servers on wipeouts end the fact other people are suffering too.

Thanks Ash-Owen and Asayyeah and JorgeX for the great races tonight :)
You guys are really, really good-- fun to have some super-challenging opponents to go up against!
Hope to see you around again soon!
Also-- my wife wants to know what the hell you guys are doing up so late at night! She pointed out that it's like 3AM your time-- and hell, I'm winding down for the evening here way over in New York state ;)

26th January 2008, 03:38 AM
4AM for me too but since I didn't really get time to play Pulse in almost two weeks it was worth the evening. :P Thanks for tonight's great races. :3 I still am not ready for Rapier but I love trying to keep up with the pack and race by race reducing my distance from you veterans. :P
As a side note I now play Pulse from a Felicia Blue (PSP-2000FB) so I'm learning my EG.X physics and aerodynamics again. XD The directional pad however now feels somewhat as user friendly as the analog nub so I'm mainly relying on it untill I "break in" the fresh analog nub. :P
No feeling of sluggish server tonight for my part but I only did a couple of tournaments with you so I couldn't tell. =^.^;=

Ok, what's going on? I've seen 4 people tonight using nothing but the AG-Sys zone ship. Is that because they think somehow people might not notice they're piloting AG-Sys?
Ok, that's it for me, I've got to turn in. Thanks all and good night.

hahaa got to race against the cheat GOD_of_LORD tonight, totally pointless him entering in races to be brutally honest.
Couldnt stop laughing when zargz removed weapons from a race as soon as GOD_of_LORD joined, classic moment!
Thanks to zargz, Frances_Penfold, BARTGai, T-Rex29, SalieriAAX & anyone else from WOZ that I raced against hope I gave enough of a challenge even if it was very remote!!!
@Frances nah Im single at the moment, I cant see any prospective girlfriend accepting my WP habit though :p
On a side note managed to get rid of that bug where the race list screen stayed and eventually I got kicked out of the race as the race had loaded/started without me.
I reset my modem and waited longer after the countdown had finished and that seemed to work. I still think WP servers had been buggy but I'll try the modem reset if I come across it again; seemed to help.

4? Do time zones go in half-hours somewhere?8 ) Yes, yes they do.
Newfoundland, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Burma, the Marquesas, as well as parts of Australia use half-hour deviations from standard time.
When television shows are announced in Canada, you quite often get to hear "At 8-o-clock! 9-o-clock Eastern!" and sometimes you'll even hear "9:30 in Newfoundland". Which (among other things) lead to the hilarious joke of "2+2 is 4. 4-and-a-half in Newfoundland."
Check in next time and we'll explore more Crazy Canadiana! 8 D

Yup good races zargz, really enjoyable 1 vs 1.
Connection seemed better today for the servers, I only had the stalling once and I blame it on the guy hosting messing with the settings with 1 second to go.
Curious to see how everyone elses online games went? No stalling or crashes (the non in-game kind :P).

Anyone online now?
Edit: LOL!! I wish I had a video of my last race, it was me against two randoms on Platinum rush Phantom, one died after 2 laps and I noticed the other guy had turned around and was trying to shoot at me when I came round the track, I decided to turn around myself and creep along slowly. Saw the guy waiting just after the really narrow bit with the walls coming in at either side of the track, armed with rockets I sneaked up behind him, 2 loud bangs later he was eliminated, and me amused, eh you didn't see that one coming did you, good times good times lol

I'll try to keep this in mind in the future-- and also notice when the baton is passed to me to select the actual tracks! The first time this happened (I think it was passed to me from phl0w) I just sat there like a moron, wondering why the race was taking so long to start :dizzy
It'd be nice if there was a "random" option that selected the tracks at random! Then the whole swapping thing wouldn't be necessary (or as necessary).

Well, i guess there's only a few people playing Pulse from the US yet. And considering that it was 2.45 am here in Europe (what about Aussies ?), most of the players here might be at work or school.
You might also try this : press circle on the main Online menu to go back to the language selection screen. The number of games running is displayed (but not mentionned on the "join game" screen until they end)

And so it spreads.
I notice how you commented about how the bomb is such an imbalanced weapon for the guy in the lead, Stephen, yet you don't make any complaints about how annoying it is for backmarkers when some willy-waver with a big lead can afford to turn around and use the Quake in that way.

I think I can see the point your making here, if everyone started doing it things would get out hand? But then if you don't let someone get a huge lead in the first place then back quakes eliminated surly? If I'm that far ahead I feel I earned the lead and so, why should I not back quake? You said Del Stepho did it 3 times in one race?? OK that is taking the piss I do one if I got the chance and no more. It's not like I'm doing this in every race either its somewhat of a rare opportunity when it presents itself. Much rarer than the old timing out bomb lark, which constantly occurs
I'm also stuck in the mentality of "Other people are doing it to me I'll do it back"

It'd be nice if there was a "random" option that selected the tracks at random!
I can't count the times I wished for that option. So many people just race Talon's and Moa over and over and over and... you get it. Also, when I host a race I always get the feeling that people might think I'd only choose the tracks I'm best at, while I actually put a lot of thought in my selection.
@Backquakes: I always thought that weapon pads have different probabilites what weapons they give away, depending on your position and the number of contenders. Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems I hardly get Quakes when leading, but plenty when I'm chasing the pack. Speaking of unfair: There's really no need for the guy up front to get a Quake pick-up, or a ridiculous amount of Turbos.
Rapier Racer
31st January 2008, 04:00 PM
So your suggesting the weapon pads should not spit out random pickups, you want a catch-up style system?
phl0w
31st January 2008, 04:23 PM
They should, what I'd like to know though is, if there are different probabilities what pickup they spit out.
CR4SH3D
31st January 2008, 04:34 PM
i dont think a catch up system would work too well because youd get loads more turbos and be able to catch up pilots much better than yourself if theres enough striaght sections
i never seem to pick up what i need when i need it, but then again i miss most of the pads :P

Lion
31st January 2008, 06:48 PM
I've won races because I got lucky and had 2 laps of nothing but turbos and mines, and I've lost races where I've picked up nothing but bombs, mines and shields when middle to rear of the pack
it just goes with the game. There's a set probability of each weapon, so I just accept that "**** happens" and move on :)
my favourite thing about backquakes is when fate has smiled, so you have a shield ready. you can get through the quake with minimum impact and gain some serious ground on the leader.
I've had a couple of really close finishes thanks to people backquaking near the end of the last lap, then catching them as they turn back around
Medusa
31st January 2008, 09:18 PM
I've nothing against backquakes. If I'm so slow I let the leader have time to turn around and fire one off, then I need to practice more. And as was mentioned, it gives you a great chance to catch up sometimes. Particularly if you've got a shield and then pick up a quake to toss back.8) I love the "riding the wave" feel to going over a backquake.
And I think whatever randomness there is to Pulse's weapon pick-up is absolute crap. I picked up 3 quakes in a row online last night. I don't recall that type of "randomness" happening in any of the other wipeouts. Anyone else?
lunar
31st January 2008, 10:36 PM
I always felt with Pure online that pick ups were not completely random, and that there were probabilities attached to weapons pick-ups, depending on your situation in the race relative to the other ships. I could describe some situations that I feel make you more likely to get certain pick ups. On the other hand, we often see patterns where none exist so it could have been paranoid insanity caused by late night Kai action. I haven`t played enough Pulse to get that feeling.
As for back-quakes, I think they`re valid if you need to kill the other guy to win the tour, and occasionally they`re fine for a laugh or to make a point ;), but I believe in moderation and when people get more interested in blasting than racing it gets tiresome. The racers behind may be in a good fight for second, or just trying to improve their play, and a back-quake screws it up for them. Also if you beat someone because they turned and quaked you, which happens often enough, it feels kind of cheap; especially when you thought you might catch them anyway. I kind of think that in a racing game everyone should race to win, and win as fast as possible (didn`t Pascale Rouser say something similar), and when the play loses sight of that I don`t really enjoy it.

1st February 2008, 12:38 PM
if you beat someone because they turned and quaked you, which happens often enough, it feels kind of cheapI don't find that at all, to backquake is the action of a showboater, so if I sneak past and gain a victorym I think "haha, serves you right"
I've tried to deal out backquakes before and been passed too.. and my thoughts are "oh well, that'll teach me for getting cocky"
so basically I disagree strongly with your point :)
lunar
1st February 2008, 01:02 PM
I think you`re probably right to disagree with me ;) If somebody BQs you, let `em have it! I think also that your "c`est la vie" attitude to weapons pick ups is admirable. Whatever the system, we just have to get on with cards we`re dealt. :)
Frances_Penfold
1st February 2008, 01:34 PM
I always thought that weapon pads have different probabilites what weapons they give away, depending on your position and the number of contenders.
I have wondered this as well-- it's clearly not such a conspicuous system as in Mario Kart (first place always gets weak pickups), but it seems possibly non-random to me.
Maybe sometime we could do some statistical tests with online races between WOZ members. Or maybe the good people of Studio Liverpool could simply tell us how the pick-up system works 8)
Vincent_VII
1st February 2008, 02:36 PM
I have noticed that in AI and online matches I almost always pick up shields or turbos while in the lead. If I am dead last and far behind, I usually get shields and turbos. When close behind the leader I usually pick up missles or leach beams. When in the middle of the pack I almost always pick up rockets, mines or bombs. Quakes seem totally random.
There is slight randomness to pickups but.... not. Very rarely am I surprised by what I pick up. If I need a turbo, that is usually what I get. If I am in a situation where I need a missle, I usually pick one up. Usually being maybe 8 out of 10 times.
Rapier Racer
1st February 2008, 03:38 PM
Hmm this is an interesting question. I believe theres a probability system and its not as random as we think, the sheer number of Turbos the game spits out should be proof enough, when was the last time you got 2 quakes a lap from the same 2 pads for 3 laps? All those turbos allowed me to close down what was a huge lead I don't remember the opponent just the 'Where the hell did you come from!' afterwards.

Haven't been online in the past couple of days-- too much work and time trial racing-- but I hope to be around over the weekend. Hope to see some of y'all then :)
I suppose there are two issues:
1. Are there equal probabilities of getting each of the types of power-ups?
2. Do the probability distributions change depending on your current position in the race?
Based on the responses in this thread-- and also my own experience-- the answer to question number 1 is almost surely "YES"
The answer to number 2 is less certain, I suspect-- but could be resolved with some testing.
Possible simple testing... two WOZ pilots go online and initiate two player matches, deciding in advance who will be the "leader" and the "follower"-- and simply tally the pickups they get in their respective positions.
Testing for more subtle effects (top vs. intermediate vs. bottom positions, for example) could get really complicated though.

Good races yesterday, bazounga! :+
2. Do the probability distributions change depending on your current position in the race?Just now I had a 2-3 sec lead but still got lots of turbos so I don't think so.

I was in a tour with zargz just now and experienced lunar's problem - "wrong way" and "everlasting leech beam" through all of Plat. Rush Black. Two players were racing under my tag. That race I managed to win despite that :blarg:blarg then came tech de ra, same thing kept happening and then, my screen whited out totally and froze my psp. Had to disconnect.
What the?? Zargz did you have anything odd happen afterwards?

Hey Zargz, and Tomahawk-Tomato-Joe, and Ash-Owen, and other folks-- great races earlier today-- thanks!
And yes, it's great to meet FCK-cheaters in person.
There were a couple other wipers that passed through our games, some quite good-- not sure if they are WOZ'ers that I don't know, or if I'm just not familiar with their tags :?
Is the rJ-<some number> wiper our own RJ O'Connell?

// supersox - apologies for not carrying on with the tourney last night, lost my connection just before the end of the tourney and decided to call it a night. :)
On another note, i had a really weird experience when racing last night. It only happened once, but i was in a single race with a couple of other racers (Whose names a can't remember but i don't think they're Zoners) and we were on Moa White.
The race started and almost immediately strange things started to happen. My ship began to do some strange stuff, warping/pulsing backwards & forwards, much like the effect that you sometimes get when using the "Disruptor Bolt" in Pure. :g ...... Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, another ship pulled into my view, and it was ME!!! There were now 2 of me on the screen....!! WTF!!?
Anyway, I quite the race, and carried on in other races without incident. In hindsight i kind of wish that i had carried on to see what else may have happened, and if it happens again then i'll do just that.
Anyone else here experienced that at all?
Tomahawk
3rd February 2008, 01:46 PM
The only thing that happened to me was the bug Medusa already described in her earlier post: Loosing energy throughout the whole race and getting the "wrong way" message all of the time. The message apperaed even when I turned my ship around in that particular race and flew a backwards for almost a full lap. Happened only once to me until today, though.
What I did experience in last nights' races a few times was that the game suddenly froze completely at sometime during a race and after 1 second everything was ok again and I could carry on with my racing. Weird stuff. I also met GOD_OF_LORD and his everlasting turbo boost in one of my races about 2 months ago, but as we all know that is no bug...
Btw. does anybody know a player called "HorstFeratu"? I played against him online a few races last night and he's pretty fast (without using any cheats).

I think Supersox is playing every day. Man you were fast yesterday. In the beginning I went like the first part of my name: MAD!!!
I had to pull out everything I got to keep up. I had also no luck with picking up weapons and stuff. GGggrrr. But I hung on and got warmed up. Finally after a few tours I felt like the last part of my name: ICE!!!
I was finally cooled down and had really fighty tours which I enjoyed a lot!!!

I am at a loss of words to understand how people can race on Venom. Hell, if they got out and pushed they'de drive faster! Seriously, someone needs to kick them onto Zone and make them learn the hard way how to play :\
But yes, the latest tactic is to host a Venom game, then switch to Phantom at the last minute :P
Oh, and o3pcah, some WONDERFUL racing on your behalf there :) 5th place on Tech de Ra, Venom? =P

I often start the game, then when the timer hits between 2 to 5, someone joins, or someone leaves, very annoying.
Also, people are always quitting on me in the middle of tournaments so that I can't finish it.
For example, a 6 race tournament on flash, 4 players (including me) by then start of the 4th race there will be 2 left, assuming we get to the 4th race at all

Al motivated me to play for fun 2 of the 4 tracks from his April tourney in Usa : Metropia white ( remember Sox ? :D ) and Amphiseum white, i asked Stevie to join us and we started his dangerous tour 6 tracks ( 3 metro, 3 amphi)... 1st track big fight at 3 and Al didn't watched carefully his shield = BOOM at lap4 ! we did good racing , funnily enough i took Goteki and on those 2 tracks that ship is an ace ! I agree with RR & Sox : the flying Got' is the supership online :twisted : 2 big tours won !
I wanted to change from tracks and started a new set of tracks , Tears-of-shreds ( sorry for mispelling ) joined us : this pilot is very fast , i won the 1st tour at 4 tracks but he beat us on the last tour i created : congrats mate. :clap

well since me and my friends have pulse now, and have been playing wipEout for some time, we would like to know how many USA players live around CT and are interested in having sort of an ongoing mini-tournament series of meetings. This is obviously still in early development but if we can find enough people it could be pretty cool to do in reality. i'm thinking weekends only, prizes, and other things as it comes to mind, let me know what you think

Your ship looks very very slick online, Kansas, look forward to racing you again.
btw did you find that race very laggy? My screen kept freezing for a second too. After a Phantom De Konstruct at 15fps with 1 freeze per lap I decided it was time to quit online. :dizzy
That was you? Nice. Whoever was in third kept fighting me for second and that allowed you to get away from us. :o
Anyway, I didn't get any lag at all. It was smooth sailing for me.

hehe gg swift. no worries, i think the rest of them quit that tourney too after the first round.
btw, do you lose points if you lose a race? because i haven't been getting any points for winning :o
**Update**
not too sure where to post this but,
14 wins, 0 losses 1 dc tonight and when i updated my profile
i got a -3 points deducted. help!
opponents played against included:
swift, bloseth, brica, e-kami, de_1337 from the top 40
very decent guys on the ranking tables, so it's not like I got free wins.
played against zargz yesterday but points remained the same.

sorry Kandang, i was in a 7 races tournament with you and another racer i don't remember the name (something like "freedom30"), and got through a strange bug after the race on Outpost 7 : endless replay (fullscreen with no menus) of my ship with a weird slowdown effect and just ambient noises. I could even hit your ship that was still on the track, frozen before the last chicane. Couldn't get to the 3rd race after the countdown !!!
I think it's DL packs related…

Oh yeah this is fantastic and we are still racing atm
I must reckon i had so much fun and the races were pretty balanced against all of us : everyone has been leading and winning.
I remembered especially an impressive finish with your son Trex : the new generation of french pilot kicked my arse on Tech de Ra white with the smallest margin : 0.01 sec !!!
Tell him he rocks like everyone who was racing this afternoon :clap
The muse and I are now racing weapons off : same ship and it's pretty close !!
Wow and now Gemini Dam engaged : the most awesome track by far from Pulse, imnsho ( :D )

Ooooh man, what a night, so much fun and crazy races. Full grids most of the time and tight close races all the time. Intense to the last turn, 1 photo finish with asa and me. After quiting online, me and Mauro did a full Pure session. What a sweet game this is, but compared to Pulse, Pure is slow, but the tracks in Pure are so much more diverse and have more identity. Mauro fell in love again with Pure and he will practise for the E.W.C. 2008 in Amsterdam. :hyper

I've recognized this little red light too, but I don't know what it is. It could be that it means the tour/race has already started, but I'm not sure about that...

Hello everyone, I've been lurking around the boards for quite a while now, and only have a couple of posts. I've been playing this game since Wipeout XL/2097, and only came across WipeoutZone a few years ago.
I was just able to get Pulse in the US earlier this week, and I hope to see some of you fellow racers online. I've only just started with the game, so Rapier is about the fastest that I can go on most of the tracks.
Is there some time where most of you are online?
Looking forward to some good experiences. Please don't go too hard on me! :banzai .

Supersox, Flashback_Jack, Eleven_GG_Ex. First places constantly kept on changing. I think this was one of the best racing nights in Pulse online!!!
After Pulse we did all the tracks of Pure ad-hoc, all the way up to 6 o'clock this morning (our time) Chrono (Kellen) only had 50 hours total on Pure and exploded so many times and he just keeps on laughing, he is a real sport!!

Doing a little online at night to get used to the comparatively choppy play vs TT, but still be able to use BRS, and every person that is playing me(about 6 in a row at this point), have quit two laps into the race. think I'm going to have to play some single player races even though I cannot get the BRs. Maybe medium difficulty may be best.
What would solve this, but at the moment, Arnaud has been dodging me, at what would be around 3 am over in France(I know you are up!!)

Why does everybody play tournaments? The lobby is full of Flash and Rapier tourneys. They are full of bugs and not fun, because half the contenders leave early. Besides the online statistics don't care about tournaments- or SR- wins. Stick to Single Races! Keep track of wins in IRC for instance.
JABBERJAW
3rd March 2008, 09:53 PM
single races stink because you alway have to go back to the lobby. At least they show your time though. There is already 45 seconds wasted after the first person finishes. It would be nice if it went to next race shortly after last person finished. Although, I guess the break is kinda nice to relax for a minute
TheFrostE
3rd March 2008, 10:17 PM
tournaments the way to go for me, and if people leave early its either because A:they are bad and sore losers and dont like to get beat 10+ seconds behind on rapier or phantom. OR B: they have to leave early. Tip- dont join a tourney if you know your not gonna finish it, and if you are a regular in the online servers and someone joins you that you know can beat you and your gonna be a sore loser, then leave ahead of time :)
as for the bugs...who cares about the flawed point system, in the end....everyone in the tournament knows who REALLY won.
well im getting off topic...sooooo, me and wolfy will be hosting tourneys tonight around 9pm est, feel free to join up, rapier or phantom

Hi,
I've realized a couple of weeks ago that pulse -the online mode- was the best gaming experience ever concerning racing games (waiting for GT5 lol). I'm hosting regularly a French peaceful party named Avalon. I've just unlocked the phantom grid, so you can imagine I'm not a 0.31sec82/lap in venom on arc prime -how can you do that???????-... When I say peacefull I mean no weapons, I've never seen a F1 race with machinegun and missile launcher onboards... That's the reason of my post, in fact. I'm very often obliged to host my own race because the majority prefer gunfights... And it's not cool, because my net connection is really bad, + the online bugs, it's hard to play a bit... Hope to host you soon, bye...

Since I'm on vacation at the moment I'm online a lot under the name: "Bastou85"
See you in the game.

Thanks mikeheartsch for nice Phantom tour tonight. You was the real life-saver in the sea of quitters :D
No. I'm not posting an image from Baywatch this time.

My first online races against members of the Zone were pretty amazing. Asayyeah won every time it seemed while me and Stin were battling for second.
Sorry I couldn't stay longer - I was busy at the Southeastern Theatre Conference. I just stopped at a nearby restaurant that conveniently had Wi-Fi...I may be able to race again until Sunday.

Geez i haven't made the relation between the famous 3rd guy called Blinky77 and you RJO before reading your post :paperbag
Thx for racing , i said to Stevie ( we had while racing a funny msn video together that may explain i or Stevie was pretty long to launch or change the races sometimes ) this pilot was always at our tail without giving up !
In few weeks you ll be a Class A Threat in phantom RJO i can tell you :banzai
I started the evening by racing Ash Omen we had several close finish and i asked Stevie to join : 1st race and he won on Arc prime black clap: Stevie.
I must also congrats someone from here, i think, who really get the right vibe to destroy my goteki by a prodigious plasma clap: to you de_1337
I had my 1st races with my crazy US Ninja, Ben you are on the right way piloting :+ ( but please don't scary too much Max ;) )

Thanks so much Asa...I thought I had a chance at 2nd in Tech De Ra before falling off the open section XD
I will try and get to the City Cafe again on Friday and Saturday, so if you can, let's race again!!! ^_^ Then again anyone from WZ is a worthy opponent...I'm just feeling a little bad that I don't have the DLC available in the States so that we could race the extra tracks...
