Lets see if anyone knows the answer to this I’d quite like to know. Lets say you have an HD TV that is only capable of doing 1080i, then you buy a game that says 1080p on the box, what happens? Does it drop the res down to 720p? Does it have to specifically mention 1080i on the box?

Well, 1080p is "better" than 1080i.
Knowing the difference between progressive and interlaced (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television)(look in the "Notation" section), I would imagine that your 1080i TV will simply display the 1080p image at a staggered rate.
I haven't actually tried specifically that out though, I just watch widescreen things on my widescreen TV. Never had any problems.

It's likely to depend upon the TV. Most likely it will display it at 1080i, although it's possible that it would downscale it to 720p.
However, you're reliant upon the quality of the converter in your TV, so although 1080i should be OK, converting to 720p could be a little worse than 720p native.
What you should really do is buy a spiffy 1080p television :)

I'd rather have 720p than 1080i, myself - the bigger number does not necessarily mean better quality. :)
With 1080i, you get 1080 lines once. With 720p, you're getting 720 lines twice - 1440 lines of information that give a smoother picture. If you're like me, and you can pick up the flickering of an interlaced resolution then 720p is easier on the eye.
Wish I had a TV that could do 1080p, though - going to miss out big time when I get my PS3.

If I ever get HDTV I`ll probably go for the whole lot - best quality available, but I don`t really want to get one as I`m happy with my SD Panasonic widescreen, which does the job. Is it right that you can still play PS3s on standard definition, and they run the same, just not so stonking quality? As long as I can play PS3 wipeouts, and it looks better than Fusion, I`ll be happy. To what extent does HD give you an improvement in games graphics?

According to wikipedia, that are the pixels that you're going to lose with a standard TV compared to an HDTV and thus also the details you'll miss:

I see, well at the time when I bought my TV I was not interested in HD, thought it was a lot of over hyped crap. I was simply looking for something to replace a little portable, which was no good for gaming really. I've also read however that if the HDTV is under a certain size you won't actually notice the difference 1080p provides. Mine is 26" simply because I would have difficulty fitting anything bigger in my room and I'm not willing to have it put on the wall in case it falls off. Resistance is 720p and it looks stunning I think I'll be happy with that level of picture quality, can't say I'm too willing to go spend 800-900 quid or more? For a 1080p TV right now unless the difference is astronomical

All the previous posts teach you all the technical differences.
I only add my opinion: I have a 1080p lcd tv, I've got a ps3 and motorstorm (it's a 720p game): it look excellent! It's incredible! It seems like a picture!
A real 1080p film is awesome; like a 3d picture

Do you have an lcd or an hd tube? Hd tubes look great in 1080i but my lcd does not. the lcd looks great at 1080p though. You need to set your ps3 to 1080i and it should work(ridge racer did). It would also work at 720p if your tv allows that resolution. If you try to run your ps3 at 1080p on a 1080i tv, it will not work(at least on mine it didn't.

maybe it just doesn't do 1080i well. Force your ps3 to only put out a 720p signal and see what happens then(manual video)

Well I don't have any games above 720p to test it yet lol Sorry if I was giving the impression I was having a problem I was just being curious as to what resolution I'd finally get if I tried to run a full HD game, it is capable of doing 720p according to the book. I do have Blu Ray Casino Royal it is full HD so I think I will change some setting try the full 1080p like you did and see what happens, I will also reduce it to 720p after Foxys advice :D
