Lee was kind enough to pass this cracking image on to me for use on the site - a render he created many moons ago for the original Wipeout.

http://www.wipeoutzone.com/images/wipeout_1_render_crop.jpg

A larger version can be found here (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/images/wipeout_1_render_1024by702.jpg) - a bit of a handfull for dial-up users at 558k. The original is over 2 meg, and apparently he has a "hi res" version, although I'm not sure we have the bandwidth to cope with that! :)

Thanks Lee. 8)

I'm stunned! Is it just me or does this image cover about everything Wipeout is about? It just feels so... right. Very kewl stuff. Thanks for my new wallpaper to you and Lee. :)

Very nice, indeed. 8)

Wouldn't it be great to play the original WipEout with the crafts showing this level of detail?

Oh man, I'm a sucker for eye-candy.

Me too! I'd especially like to have a Wipeout game set in these exact colors. They perfectly resemble the high-tech-high-speed-sci-fi athmosphere I feel home in.

Absolutely my take on it as well - for me this captures it perfectly as a high octane racing sport. I was less keen on the other take on it, with the advertising billboards and the almost commercialism of it, but this render is perfection. :)

Huh, what other take?! *looks around nervously* :-)

I just mean that I see the Wipeout universe as a futuristic form of motorsport, where it was all about the racing, the competition, and the spectacle, as opposed to being about the advertising opportunities for companies like Red Bull (not so bad) and Kappa (runs screaming).

That's all. :)

:D Glad you like it, it's humbling to get great feedback from yourselves too!

Now that I'm back at Sony it's nice to be close to Wipeout again and I look forward to getting my creative teeth back into our baby in the future! :D

Lee, i admire your work. the clarity and the tone value choices really make it work for me. this particular image is so crisp and has such a tech feel, but also has dynamism and excitement. thanks for sharing it with us.

----------

the major thing i hate seeing in today's motorsport is the adverts plastered all over the car. i remember the 50s and most of the 60s when there were none in Grand Prix. the cars were beautiful and unspoiled, as Wipeout ships are in the games. yes there were strip banners by the roadside in those days, and the adverts on the occasional bridge over the track, but even with those it was a visually beautiful sport. i'd love to see that again

Oh, OK. Cause I was getting a little worried after I read Lance's "number two just became my new wallpaper" comment and REALLY started to wonder whether I had missed something after I misunderstood your "second take". *sigh*

ahem. number two image, the larger pic that was linked instead of incorporated in the post. i should have paused and rewritten to make that clearer, but at least I knew what i meant ;)

------

and um... er... not to criticise harshly or anything, but.. uh..., er..., Rob, that first image displayed directly in the post is large enough to break our rule about taking it easy on the dial-up users puny bandwidth. although these images are bloody well worth the time [ i say this as a dial-upper ]. i mention it because i have specifically criticised other members for doing the same thing, and it would not be fair if i did not point this out, even to our serverpayerfor. :D
of course i share your high enthusiasm for this great rendering and would probably have been tempted to show it directly muhself. and speaking of high resolution images, is there anyway we can get that 2 meg one? it would be worth the download time even to this persnickety dialupper

That's what I figured at last. Too late, it seems. ;-)

Is there a chance you could send me the 2MB version, Roger? That is, if you are allowed to...
I think I could put in on my website. Besides, I'd simply like to have the picture in its best-possible quality. *g*

It was indeed softimage - running on an Indy. Didn't take too long to render, couple of hours. There was some post pro done in photoshop too i.e. the motion blur. If I'd have rendered that motion blur in 3D in those days it could have taken a week to render!

Sorry 'bout the short post, full of cold and brain doesn't work.
