View Full Version : Flying Again!

The new WOXL tables have really breathed life back into this version of Wipeout for me.
I just finished flying Sagarmatha, and I'd totally forgotten how great a game XL is.
The crisp speed and bright colours... For the past while I've been playing 3SE when I sat down for some WO, but that version is just so _huge_, it's tough to sit down at it for just a couple minutes. Only having 8 tracks and 4 ships doesn't make XL a "smaller, less worthy" WO, it simply condenses the goodness into a sleek, tight package.
Flying these tracks now (getting a perfect lap and not crashing into a wall out of surprise) I almost find it hard to believe that at one point in time I couldn't beat a couple of those tracks without the Pirhana. And now I can't even stand to use it. 8 )
Anyway, it's good to see some other people in the WOXL tables already.
Lance: You used to have a nice time on Sagarmatha there.
Fox Zero: You might want to do what I did with WOXL, start a new game on a new memory card and not use the Pirhana. It's so much more rewarding the second time through.

which one? i thought the only decent times i had were on Talon's reach in vector class. i'm pretty much crap on all the other tracks and classes. it's going to be interesting to see what sort of times result now that we've got a focus for our efforts. so far there's only three of us in XL records. we need to get more participation from all those members who say that XL is their favourite WO.
when i put those few times in last night, it reminded me that i almost never play Venom class, not in XL and not in WO3 either. i have no idea why this is. once i achieve a minimum in Venom to get past it, i just don't care for it any more. i'll put lots of time into perfecting Vector, or into struggling to get 'round at all in Rapier and Phantom, but Venom just rarely ever gets my attention. odd. makes absolutely no sense at all to me.
i often find myself pushing the hyperthrust button in XL.
to no avail. :D
Qirex is my preferred ship for times. haven't won Piranha yet. though i tried it using a cheat to see what it's like. pretty cool flying entirely without weapons. i need to play this game some more [and WO3, also, since i've not played either game for a long time], and these records tables will be a great incentive when i can drag myself away from card games with the neighbors. ;) [it feels good to socialise for a change]

Qirex Rox!
One of your times on Sagarmatha (Rapier, I think) looked like a good time compared to mine, so I sat down and put some work into them.
Your Vector Talon's Reach is far better than "decent", it's a great time. I had a heck of a time getting my current record on that track and I'm not even a second ahead of you. WD.
Yeah, the way you fly in 3 is vastly different from the way you fly XL. "Pit every lap" compared to "Never pit", "Hyperthrust" compared to "Turbo", "Constant protection from the few opponents you see after the first half of lap 1" compared to "Constant barrage from attackers who are always near", it's almost surprising that one is a sequel of the other. It took me at least 10 minutes to train myself to fly for XL since it's been so long that I've been playing 3.
The reason you don't play any Venom is because you don't play multiplayer. Rapier is a speed challengs, Vector is a "perfect line" challenge, Venom falls inbetween. Vector is no good for multiplayer (too slow, not exciting enough), and Rapier is generally too fast for a good head-on-head challenge, you crash too often to get maximum fun out of it.

makes sense. there isn't much real speed to venom, so i can't enjoy that aspect. even back when you and i were fighting it out for perfection on Vector Terminal, i couldn't drum up any interest in venom class. i would make one or two runs and already be bored. i had more fun flying a Feisar or Pirhana on Rapier class Terminal.
hm... after those world-record times we made back then, i can't believe we eventually got smoked so bad by zargz and wiseman. but we did rule for quite a while!

Yeah, I'm not much of a Venom fan either, Lance. Although a quick look at the times tables would tell anyone that.
Anyway, I still need to get my XL times off the memory card. I can go ahead and enter my times for the challenge we played a while back, though (since they are the fastest I've got for those tracks, I know).

that damn hyperthrust, there must be a button for it somewhere..... you really have to remember those blue pads in this game.
as for the old times.... I entered all mine, and they are very very beatable.
Everyone with WO2097: please enter all your old times, and we`ll take it from there. 8)
thanks xeik and infox for this wonderful new arena.
I need to practice.

So what you're saying is... You have a DexDrive... For the PlayStation you don't own.
Fantastic.
Things like that make me very happy. Like people who have DVDs for the DVD player they don't own. Or CDs for the CD player they don't have. One of those cosmic ironies that just make you grin like an idiot.

I had dvds for the dvd player i didnt own, until i got my computer a few months ago. I dont own a playstation because for the first time I'm living with someone who doesnt own a ps1 or a ps2. I can pick one up for about 30 bucks at the local second hand shop, but i cant make myself do it right now. Im dumping all the cashola i have into snowboarding while the season lasts. Every month i have probably less than $400 to play with after bills and necessities, and I'm looking at spending more than that to overhaul my boots and bindings. I am constantly living on the edge of my own means, which isnt a bad thing as long as it doesnt bite me in the arse.
in other words, the end of winter= time for me to catch up financially and then buy a PS1. :)
